It truly saddens me to see that in 2005 that this country still believes that on race dominates another better yet that they believe everything they hear without reading or doing the research for themselves. I challenge blacks and whites alike to read and do some research before you open your mouth and embarrass your self. What is reported in this country is so lopsided that it forces you to believe one thing verses the other depending on which side of the fence you are on. It should be about the facts not myth. If you read you would find that blacks continue to face unfair challenges in areas of homeownership (interest rates), job selections and education. These are the same areas in which you continue to judge them. If you were unable to live in an area where you could receive a good education in order to land a good job…. you are then at a disadvantage. I am not saying that it is not up to blacks to make there on way. (by the way the majority of them are not receiving social services those are the ones you choose to see) However it is evident that if any one believes that blacks are beneath them; if you had to decide to offer them a position you would most likely deny them the opportunity, which then perpetuates the cycle. Numbers are what they are, but they only tell part of the story. Those truly interested in enlightenment and truth will look for it beyond their on perspective and limited experiences. This really does require an unpopular level of humility — how many people are willing to admit just how ignorant (lacking in knowledge) they really are? Fortunately, ignorance is one societal disease for which there is readily a cure.
To me, it seems that one problem with a disadvantaged people is that they may simply be inclined to accept it. This is really easy when you grow up, generation after generation being forcibly limited and told that you will never amount to anything, and that you will be bum, felon or whatever just like your father or mother.
The interesting thing is that this mentality is not only the mentality of the disadvantaged, but of all people really. People are inclined to believe what they are repeatedly told. If a person is instilled with a belief in himself, then he will be “more” likely to succeed. There are those who are models for overcoming tremendous odds in succeeding and are inspirations for the disadvantaged. But how much easier it will be for those who have and will succeed on account of a legacy passed down to them from their parents.
While many of the forces that previously restricted the plight of blacks are no longer there, the legacy of them are still crippling. And while they may no longer be etched in the law books, they are still often enforced by the collective psyche of our time and age (as readily reflected in the comments issued in this message board.)
The are at least two type of disadvantaged people: those that accept it and those that reject it. Note that those that reject may in the end not be able to overcome it, but those that accept it most definitely will not.
Instead of killing every black child as a way to reduce crime, make sure they are in an environment where they can learn another way.
An interesting statistic would be to compare and contrast the propencity toward violence and success of both blacks and whites growing up in comparable socio-economic environments (with parents of similar educational backgrounds.)
If there is one thing that seems consistent, it is that people are truly a product of their environments. Improve the environments, and the people will improve. Improve the people in the environments, and they will also improve the environments.

math is math. I may have an opinion but the numbers do not. You and I differ but our calculators do not. I am proud of many things and accomplishments coincidentally my skin is white. I am certainly proud of who I am and what I have accomplished throughout my life. My lack of pigment has no bearing on how I feel about my culture or any other. In a previous statement I may have made inflammatory remarks only to “bring out the wolves” so to speak. There are some profoundly thoughtful statements such as those made by Kevin and Ms. Martin. Take a look back up this thread and then tell me what is wrong with Americans discussing differences. Clearly social bias exists in all of us weather we wish to see it in ourselves or not. I have social bias and am able to understand the numbers for what they are…calculating and cold with no bias. If I were black the numbers would not change.

This quote was taken out of context, Bennet was responding to a book called “Freakimomics” which asserted that the crime rate has gone down because abortion has eliminated many of the black youth who would now be committing crimes. He was refuting the arguement by taking it to it’s logical end. After which he called the idea morally reprehensible. In other words he was saying the opposite. You have to read the whole context of the discussion. The discussion took place on his radio show over a hour period.

Yes, there is a lot of crime reported that features people designated by their color. How about the meth mom who bribed her captor to let her go this past week; they’re not going to charge her with possession? How about the KKK, aren’t they a terrorist organization, or the Minutement out of Missouri/Kansas; or how about the New Order of the Northwest…Idaho. How about the Posse Comitatus? Should not they be profiled? They may declare that they are for white people’s rights but its the undeclared actions that speak the loudest.
I say stop trying to push people down; try to encourage and uplift…then you will see a real ratio to crime. I don’t make any excuse for a person who robs or steals; but I know that if you concentrated on catching all crooks rather than NCP, the nearest colored person, you would see the real stats.

The relationship is extraneous at best. Just because more blacks are arrested and/or prosecuted doesn’t mean that they are more likely to commit a crime. If anything, your numbers show that our justice system is more proned to prosecute blacks than whites. Also, crime is more associated with class than race/ethnicity (the extraneous connection). If you look at crime trends in Europe and Canada, the connection between blacks and crime is virtually null. Minorities in this country tend to be be of lower class, the lower class tends to have fewer opportunities (many aren’t able to hire lawyers). What about white collared crime (which is hugely underestimated by the UCR and NCVRS)? The number of deaths due to W.C.C. is 6 times the homocide rate. The monetary costs are 60 times petty street thefts. Yet the chances of WCC being reported are slim to none. As a black woman, I am very upset by the many problems I see in the black community and in society as a whole. As I have ceom to know in my years being here on earth, Caucasians, Blacks and no other race of people are perfect. People of all races have a criminal, a deviant element in it. On the other hand there are people from every race (african americans included) that make remarkable strides and contributions in society. So to single out blacks as people in the US have done since the beginning of time, blaming them for all of america’s social ills in my opinion is ignorant and lazy. It is always easier to point the finger and make a scapegoat out of someone else. I am grateful for people like Bill Gates and Oprah WInfrey who want to play a part in contributing to society and giving a chance to those people that are willing to make a difference in life. I am grateful for those people that reach out to help people that help themselves. I truly feel that Bennett intended to make his comment to hurt black people. As a mother and wife, to be honest it make me sad. I have a proud black husband who works hard and takes care of my family and does it well. If anything Bennet has done for me, he has helped to push me a little harder to instill worthwhile values in my family. I want to spew hatred right back to him and other racist people when I read what he said, but I won’t do that. A couple of years ago I worked for a department store in North East Florida. We had a problem with teenage shoplifters and our stated policy was “we procecute all shoplifters.” In reality if the shoplifter was black and/or male, our manager almost always did call the police and press charges. If the kid was a white female he was more likely to call her parents and ban her from the store.
If you only looked at the numbers, it would APPEAR that more males and blacks were shoplifing. The reality underlying the numbers was that a pretty equal number were committing the same crime, but a selective group were being being put into the criminal system.

After reading the various comments on this site, i am indeniably saddened by the apathy in our country. Who cares about stats. Wrong is wrong and write is write. It is 2005 and we need to get over racism. I am an African American women, that is in college, willing to work, and i graduated with honors from high school. I have never sold or used drugs and i have no problem helping those in need. So the next time someone wants to utter the words that we are lazy, intellectually slow, and not ethically sound, you need to look at yourself. I have never been on welfare or do I know anyone who has but there are just as there are Caucasian people too. Per the argument of Mr. Bennett, his point is to reduce the crime rate. We’re not looking at the percentage but the numbers. So if his argument is correct, aborting black babies would not make much of an impact as aborting white babies, because more crimes came from whites. Therefore aborting white babies would reduce crime more, and based on the 2000 census, There would be 287,758 less crimes in this instance. So because this is a fact, should a black person get up in public and say aborting white babies would reduce crime? Think about it!

I’m not surprised by any of the comments made by the the obvious “white” forum. To attack blacks for supposedly doing the same things that white people have been doing for centuries. This country is foundeded on the white raping, pillaging and killing. The real evil in America is the idea that underlines the make up of the entire Western Hemisphere. That idea is called White Supremacy. It is an idea builded upon a premise that White must rule over all the races of the world.
This premise is not based upon a conclusion by White men that they are more intelligent. Indeed they are not. The premise is not based upon a conclusion by White men that they are are the chosen ones by God. For God and Christiany was created by White men to help them deal with the reality of death.
The doctrine of White Surpemacy is based upon an idea that White men must rule over all the color people of the world simply because of the color of their skin.
In order for United States to be a great nation, the doctrine of White Surpemacy must die an evil death. America will not last the thousands of years other great nations have lasted until this doctrine is defeated.
People should judged individually by the content of their character, not simply by the color of their skins. Racism, Bigotry, & Prejudice has no place in a great Nation of many, many people and culture.
I pray for the day that all prejudice will no longer exist.

As a black, I have NO problem saying so. Why is that? As a student of criminology, I know that in this world today, blacks are often born poorer than whites. Born poor, raised poor, one has lesser chances at a higher education than if one was born in a middle-class society. Thus, one is more often going to turn to crime than a child reared in a middle-class environment.
You want the right way to reduce crime?
Focus on education.
Put more cops on the street.
Increase the number of social workers.
Run the social work system by MBA’s who’d run it like a business focused on positive results.
Shore up the borders.
Teach the poor, care for the mentally disabled.
And here’s a dash of crazy – institute a government-sponsored type of religion based on chivalry, civic-duty and honor. Nutty? Maybe. But it could work. And it’s a helluva better idea than those who’re proud of themselves merely because of their skin color.

Wow! I’m originally from Canada, and moved to the U.S 2 years ago. I am in awe of the racial tension that still exist in America. And I am overwhelmed by how ignorant caucsians remain. The comment by Bennett, has the rationale of Hitler, or Sadam…genoicide in the 21st century, in America. And we wonder why the American flag is burning in so many countries. No amount of crime in Modern U.S.A by African Americans will ever top the sadistic and morally apprehensible crimes of Slavery, and the Trans-atlantic slave trade, the rapes, the murders, the genocide to blacks and Native Americans. This country is drenched in blood. If you all knew your history you would know that the Africans began civiliation – medicine-astronomy-mathematics-philosophy that we still teach today and put a white face on it. Life, history did not start for the AFrican when you kidnapped them off the Western coast of Africa. We had a civilizaion, culture before we were your slaves Oh! and those social programs, check your facts- Equal oppotunity Programs and Affirmative action- has helped the caucasian woman, extensively more than the African American. I don’t live in America and I have never been there, but it seems to me that it has a corrupt system. I am only 14 but I am old enough to realise that America isn’t as great to livein as people always say.
