Cheney Admits to Having ‘a Beer’ Before Shooting Whittington

Just saw ultra rightwing newsreader Brit Hume on Fox previewing his interview with the vice president about the hunting accident in which Cheney shot fellow hunter Harry Whittington. Hume says Cheney said he had one beer with lunch.

For all we know, Cheney could have had a twelve pack of Bud tall boys in him when he pulled the trigger.

Supposedly, the shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. so he wasn’t feeling the effects of the alcohol.

Hume — who resembles Herman Munster more each day — also growled that only “Bush and Cheney haters” are saying the vice president was drunk when he shot Whittington.

Hume added that there was no evidence Cheney was drunk — ignoring the fact that there is no evidence because the vice president waited until the next morning to allow himself to be interviewed by a local sheriff, at which point there was no point in administering a blood alcohol test. So for all we know, Cheney could have had a twelve pack of Bud tall boys in him when he pulled the trigger.

Generally it is illegal to use firearms while drinking, althoughTexas may be different.

  1. Actually, the law in Texas is that if no one is fatally injured in your hunting accident, you are under NO obligation to even report it to authorities. The fact that Cheney and his entourage spoke with authorities the next day is more than 90% of people do. That’s just how it is here. My husband is an attorney in Austin.

  2. hmmmm, i am wondering how rachel knows that 90% of texans don’t report hunting accidents?????? my understanding is that hospitals do report all gunshot injuries. in any event, is that really what is about?
    1. was cheney under the influence when the shotting took place?
    2. why did it take so long to report an event of this magnitude in which the vice president of the united states was inolved.
cheney’s excuse that he did not have a press attache with him or that it was better for the “eyewitness” to report the matter several hours later, does not make any sense.
the general sense, even among the generally lethargic american perss, is that someone is hiding something. but then that seems to the theme of the current administration. maybe cheney should have said that he only met whittington at the white house channukah party.

  3. ?Is it true that both Bush and Chaney have two (2) prior convictions for drunkedness? ?What would be the legal consequence if either Bush and/ or Chaney were convicted for a third alcohol-related offense? ? Somewhere I recall having read that a third conviction would be the equivalent of a ‘third strike’, i.e., twenty-five years to life?

    Please advise.

  4. It is not so much about havcing a beer or being on heart medication or going shooting it is about doing all three at the same time.

  5. As an ex-ER nurse in Texas, I have never seen a gunshot victim under any circumstances come through the ER without notification of the authorities and subsequent questioning of those involved.

  6. Here is comes! Open the floodgates, Cheney is going to get hammered on the fact he was drinking.

Honestly, I think we can all assume he was probably under the influence. I have to think he was just by the fact that the police officer(s) were not allowed to enter that evening to talk to him.

  7. I would like to nail Cheney’s ass to the wall, but we can’t say for sure if Cheney was drunk. Simply no evidence right now to support that. Now If evidence shows that Cheney was drunk, this opens up a whole new can of worms, but as of right now, we can’t make that assumption. 1 beer does not constitute “being drunk”.

  8. What size beer? What was the alcohol content of that beer? Some beers are like having a 6 pack.

  9. YOU WOULD BE GULLIBLE TO NOT BELIEVE DICK THE PUPPET MASTER WAS NOT CARRYING A FLASK FILLED WITH THE BEST BOOZE MONEY COULD BUY.WHY AVOID THE SHERIFF IF YOU WERE COVERING UP THE FACT OF EXCESS DRINKING OF ALCHOL.WHY DO THEY RELEASE THE PHESANTS FROM THE CAGES IN PA.FOR DICK? WHY NOT LET HIM SHOOT ALL 70 IN THIER CAGES,IT WOULD BE JUST AS SPORTING AND MUCH SAFER FOR THE PUBLIC.OR JUST LET HIM DROWN THEM IN THE CAGES,SAME SPORTSMANSHIP AND SAVE AMMO….

  10. To error is human to be drinking and shooting is stupid?Has A crime been committed, by accident or not? while drinking and shooting in texas. Do the Qails give A hoot if V/Pres. Cheney was drinking? I bet Mr. Wittington does.It goes to the heart of the matter.

  11. Hey, if you don’t have anything to hide, you shouldn’t complain about taking a face full of buckshot from a drunken VP.

  12. I think that since Cheney is such a dead-eye, he should go to Iraq and hunt down the insurgents!!!!!

  13. I think we need to look at the facts here and not be ignorant – First off – Whittington is not a small man (the size of whatever they were hunting) So in this world I dont think any normal being could make such a mistake as shooting a human assuming it was a bird – That to me does not make sense. 2nd – why did he not visit the man he shot at the hospital the same day instead of wait until the next day? People – think about that – unless he had something to hide. 3) He admits having 1 drink at lunch? Come on – we are talking about Dick – that makes that point.

Anyway – Bottom line is he was drunk when he should his friend!! Pretty sad!!

  14. Hearing some people say that you do not have to report hunging accidents in Texas unless there is a falality.

That’s “somewhat” misleading….if someone ends up in the hospital, the hospital is required to notify law enforcement who is supposed to begin an investigation IMMEDIATELY.

If there is a fatality, then private citizens must notify Police, presumably because the body might not be taken to the hospital. Law enforcement is then supposed to begin an IMMEDIATE investigation.

In sum, if there is a fatality or a hospitalization, investigation is supposed to begin IMMEDIATELY.

  15. Sorry, that’s hunting accident, not hunging.
