GOP Bush-Hater: Calamity Awaits Because Public Is Dumber Than Preznint

Un-smart Americans: Imagine if a liberal said this:

What does it say for democracy that half of the American population is unable to draw a rational conclusion from unambiguous facts? Americans share this disability with the Bush administration.

We’d be called “Bush haters” or “liberal extremists” — which would would be fine with us. But these statements were made by a Republican, Paul Craig Roberts, who served as an assistant secretary in the Treasury Dept. under Reagan, writing in Counterpunch last month. He also said:

Two recent polls, a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll and a New York Times/CBS News poll, indicate why Bush is getting away with impeachable offenses. Half of the US population is incapable of acquiring, processing and understanding information.

Much of the problem is the media itself, which serves as a disinformation agency for the Bush administration. Fox “News” and right-wing talk radio are the worst, but with propagandistic outlets setting the standard for truth and patriotism, all of the media is affected to some degree.

Despite the media’s failure, about half the population has managed to discern that the US invasion of Iraq has not made them safer and that the Bush administration’s assault on civil liberties is not a necessary component of the war on terror. The problem, thus, lies with the absence of due diligence on the part of the other half of the population.

Roberts says he considers himself a paleo-conservative. If so, paleo-conservatives think a lot like us:

Americans need desperately to understand that 95 percent of all Muslim terrorists in the world were created in the past three years by Bush’s invasion of Iraq.

Americans need desperately to comprehend that if Bush attacks Iran and Syria, as he intends, terrorism will explode, and American civil liberties will disappear into a thirty year war that will bankrupt the United States.

The total lack of rationality and competence in the White House and the inability of half of the US population to acquire and understand information are far larger threats to Americans than terrorism.

America has become a rogue nation, flying blind, guided only by ignorance and hubris. A terrible catastrophe awaits.

Scary on so many levels.

  1. Bruce Bartlett, another Republican from the Reagan Administration has a book out just this week called, Imposter: How George W. Bush Bankrupted America and Betrayed the American Legacy.

A lot of the information we’re getting on Bush’s misdeeds come from Republicans who have more loyalty to the nation and the constitution than they do to their party. I predict we’re going to find out more and that Bush’s numbers will continue to plunge. Bush no longer has the 50% that Roberts is talking about. But Roberts is right about one thing: Americans need to be more concerned.

  2. I’ll wager more Americans care about NASCAR than world politics. We sadly deserve the crap-ass gov-mint we got simply based on apathy. I have more outrage fatigue. Must take 3 year nap and maybe this nightmare will have passed….

  3. How an anyone be surprised? Look at what passes for “education” – it has been “dumbed down” k-12 and it is being “dumbed down” in post-secondary schools. Of course, the Elite schools have always specialized in “manufacturing” degrees for the children of priviledge, but the rest of us need the best educaiton we can get.

The Educational System Was Designed to Keep Us Uneducated and Docile

And don’t allow those that are responsible directly or indirectly (though their continued partidipation) to play the “BUT TEACHERS ARE NOT PAID ENOUGH!” card.

Giving those directly and indirectly responsible fo this situation will not change a thing — and the new teachers? The “vets” run them out of the system as quickly as they can.

There is a reason that all studies show that EDUCATORS have BELOW AVERAGE intellegence…

  4. anonymous, I don’t know what studies you’re reading, but I’ve never seen one that says educators have below avserage intelligence. There’s a lot of cynicism in our country right now and there are times that gives the advantage to Republicans milking the system for what it’s worth. To be honest, I’d be more worried about commericials than education. That’s where the real brainwashing is if anything. But Bush’s numbers are falling which means some people are finally paying attention who weren’t just two years ago.

drew, I understand your frustration, but 49% of Americans voted for Kerry and that’s before Bush’s numbers started tanking.

Yesterday, the amount of oil that Nigeria exports dropped because of internal violence. When Americans see their gas pricss go up because of Bush’s incompetence, they’ll care.

In fact, an overwhelming majority of Americans care about what’s going on in Washington but don’t know what to do about it.
