This is probably the best and surest way to "honest" elections. I think that Oregon is the only State in the Union that uses it, and it seems to work well for them.
California would be a great place for this as would both Ohio and Florida, but I would like to see it be a national institution.
P.S. I have voted this way for years.

Thank you, guys, thank you. And for those worried about their absentee ballot simply disappearing, you can mail your ballot "certified mail, no signature required" from any US Post Office and receive a receipt that assures delivery on the spot.

And please remember – machines may be fixed or manipulated, but those fine people working away for our democracy in Registrar Offices are our neighbors, friends, and fellow citizens that warrant our trust and faith in them to do the right thing, and while a few may not live up to expectations, I truly must believe in the goodness of ordinary men and women who honestly provide a valuable service for America. Peace, and vote!

I was living in Columbus, OH during the Nov 2004 fiasco where the Rethuglians outright stole the election thanks to the nutty, ultra-right-wing secretary of state Ken Blackwell and felon-in-chief, Gov Bob Taft. Knowing their plans, I ensured that our family of four voters used the absentee ballots. This way, we didn't have to stand in line nor outside in the rain for three hours. Yes, that's how long it took my boss, who lived in the west side of Columbus, to vote that day.

Added point -- become an election judge/poll worker! Since I vote absentee, it frees me up on election day to work at the polls! Save your vote and participate in the election process all at the same time!
