Buzzflash: Are We Re-Living the McCarthy Era?

This email message from Buzzflash is about as cogent a summation of our era as I’ve seen lately:

Is this what the Joe McCarthy period was like? A time when a congenital and chronic liar held the nation at his mercy until the United States Army and Edward R. Murrow exposed him? Only now we have a happy-go-lucky version of McCarthy in the White House.

But Bush is exposed day after day, and he keeps on popping back up with that “Pet Goat” grin, a one-man Hurricane Katrina, leaving disarray and destruction in his wake.

It seems that even the old cliched joke about the powerful politician who would only be brought down if he was found in bed with a live boy or a dead woman wouldn’t even apply to Bush.

The American people, according to the polls, have caught on to him, but the press keeps treating him as a credible president. It’s like having a court of public relations professionals, under retainer, report the news.

Hmmm…that may be exactly what’s going on.

You have a President who should be shunned, and the lone Senator, Russ Feingold, who tries to censure Bush is shunned instead.

The people who had the courage to create this great country are spinning in their graves at the craven capitulation of most of our elected officials.

We deserve better than a morally corrupted, cowardly rubber stamp Congress.

We deserve better than a morally corrupted, cowardly rubber stamp Congress…..well, of course we do, but until we pull a Howard Beal on em, we aren’t gonna get bupkus. Open the windows, my friends, and sing it out, WE’RE TIRED AS HELL, AND WE’RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!

THEN, vote the bastards out of office. Take note: Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Right on!!

Hypocrites and Gutless…

Every Democrat has to go On Record on the Censure Resolution and whoever goes against it needs to be thrown out of office.

Challenge them in in the Primaries.

I’m Mad As Hell And I’m Not Gonna Take It Anymore!!!!!

Barry

Vote ‘em out?

Diebold, ES&S, Sequoia.

Get real.

It doesn’t matter if you vote or not, it’s who is counting the vote that matters. Bush definately wasn’t elected in 2000 and probably wasn’t re-elected in 2004. As long as machines without paper records are used, there will be no honest election in the U.S.

Democracy in America is dead. The Democrats show themselves time and time again as spineless pols deathly affraid of the evil manipulator Rove. The Republican’s care more about personal financial gain and party loyalty than they do the country or the Constitution. And then there is the average American who is more concerned with who is being voted off the island or the next American Idol than they do their own freedom.

Let’s face it, we’ve got the best government money can buy, unfortunately the poor and what’s left of the middle class is fresh out of dollars. Shamefully, Russ (Don Quixote) Feingold is on his own. What a sad day it is!

As usual, buzzflash is right on target. You have truckers, dockworkers, housewives, carpenters and farmers who know this farce of a president is selling the country into slavery and a Stepford media who can’t seem to contort themselves enough to give W. the benefit of the doubt. But that’s not at all bad. It’s frustrating, but it’s not bad. Ed Murrow was the rare exception, but more often than not change moves from the bottom up. That’s what I believe is happening here. If you look at the raw numbers for evening cable news viewership, they’re almost microscopic. They are visible every evening so that’s what we comment on. Hell, O”Reilly, who has the highest rated evening show, has just a tad over 300,000 viewers in a nation of 280 million people. That’s squat, that’s nothing. My hope is that as blogging grows that more and more of us will start commenting on what we see around us and how we can work to change it rather than on a few loudmouths with paltry audiences.

The majority of our citizens apparently respond to two conditions:1)imminent imgined and real danger; and 2) pump prices. The lack of a draft has circumvented a wide-spread reaction to the war. So, I think, we will have to wait for something traumatic which will either lead to martial law or provoke the masses to write their representatives and/or march in the streets. Keep your powder dry.

everyone should demand that ther senator support Russ, what are the senators afraid ofif Bush is within the law so be it if not make him pay

well excuuuuuse me! Little Georgie has been one of my best stoodints to date! I taught him that Lady Liberty is a ho, and he is along for the “easy ride.”

EVERY BODY SHOULD SEE THE MOVIE:

Plot Summary for
The Front (1976)
In the early 1950s Howard Prince, who works in a restaurant, helps out a black-listed writer friend by selling a TV station a script under his own name. The money is useful in paying off gambling debts, so he takes on three more such clients. Howard is politically pretty innocent, but involvement with Florence - who quits TV in disgust over things - and friendship with the show’s ex-star - now himself blacklisted - make him start to think about what is really going on.

It’s far beyond the McCarthy era. It’s just before the Reichstag fire, after which the Nazis gave up all pretense that the Deutschland was a democracy and went for the thousand year third Reich thing, instead. How to prevent the impending doom? We the people change the world, that’s how..

You really trust the voting system nowadays? To reflect the will of the people?

I don’t. I haven’t, not since 2000.

Somehow I get the feeling it is going to take a lot more than going to the polls to turn things around now.

Don’t hold your breath on those elections! Remember, the Repugs have installed those Diebold, ES&S and Sequoia voting machines in almost every state, fixed the voting rolls and disenfranchised huge blocks of Democratic voters. Check out BlackBoxVoting.org. It’s like trying to get rid of cockroaches once they have completely infested your house — but it can be done.

our “cheerleading” prez is nothing but an indulged, selfserving fratboy-the best posterboy for increasing the “death tax”-inherited,but unearned power, influence and capital should end forwith

It’s time to set a legal precedent

There’s no longer any way around it: George W. Bush must go to prison.

So must Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Donald Rumsfeld and the whole sociopathic, vicious gang.

Impeachment, dragged screaming and kicking out of the White House, permanent humiliation is no longer enough. It’s no longer enough for us to disgrace them, then let them serve out their respective terms, and leave them the leisure to rehabilitate themselves into elder statesmen in years to come.

The American people must once and for all show our current and future leaders that there are consequences – personal and inescapable – for lack of conscience, lack of leadership, and lack of compassion for the people who elected them, the people they are pledged to serve.

Therefore, the president of the United States must go to prison.

He cannot be permitted to escape a term in the lockup by resigning, as Nixon did. Even if he resigns – unlikely, since those who think themselves kings must abdicate not resign – he must be charged, tried, and convicted of all his multiple felonies, then sentenced to life, plus the duration of the “War on Terrorism”.

Because if we, the American people, don’t finally show the people who work for us, who were hired by us, and are paid by us that they are accountable to us, Bush and his thugs and those who come after them will keep perpetrating crimes on us over and over and over again, and there will never be any accountability.

Never mind how unlikely it may seem that this can be done now, with all three branches of government under Republican control, and the Democrats in Congress searching high and low for a spine. First, the lock-step is not quite as locked as it seems and thus the “reality base” may have more support across the aisle than we think; and second, control of Congress is almost certainly going to change in November. That’s not just optimistic talk - all the signs are there, in spite of all the “where the hell are the Democrats” articles in the MSM. Perhaps THAT will make the Democrats stand up for themselves and for us.

And in any case, consider the consequences if we don’t:

Our so-called “leaders” ignore the will and well-being of the people and make us the enemy of the world.

They lie with impunity to keep us fearful, terrified, weak.

They steal our birthright, kill our children, destroy our country.

We must stop them. We must do all legally in our power, and we must start now. Before they stop America forever.

The way we get around the voting machine problem is to show up in such great numbers that they would be crazy to try and cook the books, so to speak…

With the exception of Russ Feingold and a pitiful few others, the cowardly lions of the Democratic party either have their fingers in the wind or their thumbs up their asses. I just saw a Democratic “advisor” on CNN who counseled Democrats to sit by and let the Republicans do their worst. The hope being that voters will vote against the Republicans. This is not leadership, this is cowardice and is unworthy of support. Will our only choice be between a drunken driver and no driver at all?

So REPUDIATE the corporate sons of Bushs in the presidency, the congress and the supreme court NOW; they’re bankrupting US and our offspring financially, environmentally, internationally, Constitutionally and morally into the foreseeable future. At long last, have we no sense of posterity?

Now can we compare the Bush/Cheney administration to 1930’s Germany?

Comment by KEVIN SCHMIDT, STERLING VA | Mar. 14, 2006, 9:07 pm |

Can’t any of you see this for what it is? Bush is us, folks. He represents everything that is wrong with our culture — namely the arrogance of the well-off. Our country has been a fat, smug, arrogant behemouth for far too long. We worship money, power, celebrity… and air conditioning. George Bush is just what we deserve..

Anybody pissed off yet?

I think Rich Miles has the right idea. However, I would go further. I think the Bush Gang members should receive a fair trial, but the charges should include treason and mass murder. After their conviction, they should be punished to the full extent of the law with a ceremonial firing squad in the White House Rose Garden, at sunrise - Marines in dress uniforms, the Air Force Band, globally televised - the works.

Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Cheney could attend or not, as they preferred.

my support for our troops is evev greater since they must do what they’re told–even if they know they’re being sacrificed by a fool. Bush cowers when facing bi g problems-China raping us financially(free trade indeed!)-or a nuclear and hostile North Korea.Maybe we should discipline uppity Grenada again.

SallyL–

You write: “THEN, vote the bastards out of office. Take note: Democracy is not a spectator sport.” You seem to be unaware that we do NOT live in a democracy; rather, we live in a constitutional republic. In a democracy, people’s votes are DIRECTLY represented, while in a republic, people’s votes are only INDIRECTLY represented. What this means is that in a democracy there is a REALISTIC possibility of majority rule, while in a republic there is only a THEORETICAL — not realistic — possibility of majority rule.

We didn’t vote him into office; what makes you think we can vote him out?

Nice photo. Reminded me of this one:

Maybe it is bewcause I am from the Vietnam era , but I don’t believe our troops have to do what they are told. That is the excuse used at Nuremburg and it didn’t hold. They don’t have to torture , and considering that there isn’t a draft, they don’t have to go at all. We are actually going to have a nightmare when these troops come back. They will not be the people who went over , and they will not be better for the experience. I support the people who refuse to go murder people .

Here Too.. I WILL NOT VOTE in 2006. Unbelievable, but true.

To PARTICIPATE in the FRAUD ONLY adds to the Fraud… as we SHEEP, gatherm herd, and comply.

A CALL of NO! “NO!” Should go out now by tens of thousands of us that WE WILL NOT participate in FARUDELENT US ELECTIONS… to further “support” spineless and reckless “democrats” who have failed at every step to acknowldege FRAUD VOTING MACHINES and Processes.

Democrats should be shamed and FRIGHTENED into wondering if even ANY of their dependable supporters will give them more DC power while they neglect their Oath to the Constitution… and neglect We- The People.

These Democratic FRAUDS and COMPLICITY MUST BE MET with at LEAST AS MUCH challenge as we focus on all issues. AND REGRETTABLY– Voting Machines and Vote Fraud has been SUPPORTED BY and/or IGNORED by “Democrats.”

Let the whole system-society fall if it must. We ARE NEARLY there, NOW! I for one… a long time organizer, staffer, advocate, precint walker, fundraiser, etc, etc. .. WILL NOT VOTE in 2006 or any other ‘election,’ in this Country as it now stands.

The JOKE is on ME …and us…. on “elections”… but I will at least have the DIGNITY of not participating in the ridicule and humor and deceit against me… on stage… As staged…by Diebold, ES&S and Sequoia sham elections.

I will at the Very Least… take the position of DIGNITY of many “third world” folks who BOYCOTT the SILLY charades called elections in ther countries.

We should RALLY and “BOYCOTT the US VOTE”. Create a consciousness about these Dire MEASURE and CHOICEto NOT PARTICIPATE in MY OWN CIVIC DESTRUCTION.

Maybe there will be PAPER BALLOTS– not paper trails– come September 2006 if we Truly Show our REFUSAL to GET IN the CATTLE LINES– as Germans should have refused to get in the Cattle Cars –that took them to Death Camps. God Bless the USA (deceased 2000- 2006.)

History provides a roadmap for the future. Those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it.

For those of you who think we live in a democratic republic, think again. Let’s see what Webster’s has to say.

Plutocracy: 1. The rule or power of wealth or the wealthy; 2. A government or state in which the wealthy class rules. 3. A class for group ruling, or exercising power or influence, by virtue of its wealth.
- Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary

I am a quote collector and thought I would share with you some memorable and apropos quotes from throughout history. Please copy and share.

“A constitution of government, once changed from freedom, can never be restored; liberty, once lost, is lost forever.” - John Adams

“It is not that we see democracy through the haze of optimism. We know that democracy is a jewel that must be polished constantly to maintain its luster. To prevent it from being damaged or stolen, democracy must be guarded with unremitting vigilance.” - Aung San Suu Kyi

“I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty, than those attending too small a degree of it.” - Thomas Jefferson, 1791

“Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything.” - Joseph Stalin

“The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government… The mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few to ride them.” - Thomas Jefferson

“The government is merely a servant — merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn’t. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them.” - Mark Twain

“If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.” - Abraham Lincoln in his Lyceum address

“The question shall arise, and arise in your day, which shall rule, wealth or man; which shall lead, money or intellect; who shall fill public stations - educated and patriotic free men or the feudal serfs of corporate capital?” - Wisconsin Supreme Court Chief Justice Edward Ryan, 1873

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” - Joseph Goebbels, German Minister of Propaganda, 1933-1945

“The world is more and more of a neighborhood. But is it any more of a brotherhood? If we don’t learn to live together as brothers and sisters, we shall perish together as fools.” - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“The dissenter is every human being at those moments in life when one resigns momentarily from the herd and thinks for themselves.” - Archibald Macleish

“The liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic State itself. That, in its essence, is Fascism - ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt

“The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal - well-meaning but without understanding.” - Justice Louis D. Brandeis

“The government itself, which is only the mode which the people have chosen to execute their will, is equally liable to be abused and perverted before the people can act through it.” - Henry David Thoreau, 1848

“A society of sheep must beget in time a government of wolves.” - Bertrand de Jouvenel

“You can have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, or democracy. But you cannot have both.” - Louis Brandeis

“How wealthy the wealthy are does matter. If we allow great wealth to accumulate in the pockets of a few, then great wealth can set our political agenda and shape our political culture — and the agenda and the culture that emerge will not welcome efforts to make American work for all Americans.” - Sam Pizzigati

The alarming development and aggressiveness of great capitalists and corporations, unless checked, will inevitably lead to the pauperization and hopeless degradation of the toiling masses. It is imperative, if we desire to enjoy the full blessings of life, that a check be placed upon unjust accumulations and the power for evil of aggravated wealth.
- Constitution of the Knights of Labor, 1869

“Inherited economic power is as inconsistent with the ideals of this generation as inherited political power was inconsistent with the ideals of the generation which established our government.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt

“So merciless is the tyranny of economic appetites … that a doctrine which confines them to their proper sphere, as the servant, not the master of civilization, may reasonably be regarded as … a permanent element in any sane philosophy.” - British historian R.H. Tawney

AND FINALLY, FROM THE RESPECTABLE AND STRONG RUSS FEINGOLD…

“There is no doubt that if we lived in a police state, it would be easier to catch terrorists. If we lived in a country where the police were allowed to search your home at any time for any reason; if we lived in a country where the government is entitled to open your mail, eavesdrop on your phone conversations, or intercept your e-mail communications; if we lived in a country where people could be held indefinitely based … on mere suspicion that they are up to no good, the government would probably discover and arrest more terrorists, or would-be terrorists…. But that wouldn’t be a country in which we would want to live.”

Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin)

——

Best of luck to you ALL in the coming storm.

What the Democrats don’t seem to realize is that if they fail to represent the people, we will not go back to sleep and hope that they someday will.

Eventually, things will get to the point where the majority of Americans feel there is a greater risk in remaining silent than in rising up and cleaning out the party and a half of corporate whores.
