A constitutional amendment to "defend" marriage from gay people is brought to you by the same folks who want to protect English by passing a law making it the official language of America. Does having this law change Spanish-speakers (and Haitians) into English-speakers? Does a DoMA or amendment make gay people straight? Of course not, but they both do accomplish something: they make one group of Americans feel superior to another, and they distract from issues that actually matter and for which Republicans have no pat solutions, like solving the Iraq crisis, turning around global warming, and providing all Americans with access to health care.
