The Real Threat to Marriage: Top 10 GOP Adulterers

Ten Commandments

The traditional media may be interested almost exclusively in the sex lives of Democratic politicians, but on the hypocrisy index, it is hard to score higher than Republicans pontificating about saving the institution of marriage while so many of their leaders are serial and long-time adulterers:

1. President George H.W. Bush allegedly had an LTR with British-born Jennifer Fitzgerald that lasted at least two decades, all while married to Bar, who said, “He didn’t even notice when I stopped coloring my hair.”

2. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, famously married to Maria Shriver since 1986, is allegedly a purveyor of prostitutes, the father of at least one child out of wedlock and a serial groper of women in workplace situations.

3. Sen. John McCain, 2008 Republican presidential frontrunner, and admitted adulterer and alleged philanderer. [Update July 2008: McCain’s Extramarital Affair with Cindy Ended His Friendship with Reagans in the 1970s]

4. Rudolph Giuliani, former mayor of New York City and another GOP 2008 presidential contender, betrayed his second wife, TV presenter Donna Hanover, with his “very good friend” Judith Nathan, whom he has since married. Hanover also publicly accused Rudy of having an affair with a staffer, Cristyne Lategano-Nicholas.

5. Rush Limbaugh, comedian, (a.k.a. “Rusty Sharpe”) dated Marta Fitzgerald while she was married to someone else. Marta later became his third wife. (He and CNN’s Daryn Kagin recently stopped dating.)

6. Bill O’Reilly, propagandist, who is married to Maureen McPhilmy, tried to have phone sex with Andrea Mackris, who sued him for sexual harrassment.

7. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, is probably the most audacious serial adulterer in any political party.

8. Former Rep. Bob Barr’s notoriety as an adulterer was one of many ironies around the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DoMA) which he wrote, and which was passed with the leadership of fellow adulterers Sen. Majority Leader Bob Dole and House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

9. Rep. Henry Hyde, who served as chairman of House Mangers in the adultery-related impeachment of President Clinton, was a home-wrecker himself. Hyde had an affair when he was a young and foolish man of 41 while he and his girlfriend were both very much married. Her husband later said Hyde broke up his family.

10. Gary Bauer, professional moralizing Christian nationalist, experienced a mutiny when he was running for president when actual Christians on the staff of his 2000 presidential campaign quit in protest over Bauer’s “inappropriate” behavior with a 26-year-old deputy campaign manager. Euww.

11. (Updated) Had to add this one sent in by reader S.O. that probably should have bumped poor old Henry Hyde on the list: Neal Horsley, and rightwing religious nut, freely admitted to a kinky sex life, including this outrageous exchange on Fox’s Hannity & Colmes:

AC: “You had sex with animals?”

NH: “Absolutely. I was a fool. When you grow up on a farm in Georgia, your first girlfriend is a mule.”

AC: “I’m not so sure that that is so.”

NH: “You didn’t grow up on a farm in Georgia, did you?”

AC: “Are you suggesting that everybody who grows up on a farm in Georgia has a mule as a girlfriend?”

NH: It has historically been the case. You people are so far removed from the reality… Welcome to domestic life on the farm…”

UPDATE: Thanks for all the emails. Our list attempts to identify the top 10 adulterers so there were several top contenders that didn’t make it:

  • Rep. Bob Livingston, the man who would have been House Speaker after Newt if Larry Flynt hadn’t uncovered some very kinky dirt on Livingtston. He was a top contender but since he never really served as Speaker, was bumped for Bauer.
  • It is true that Nancy Reagan was pregnant when she married Ronnie, but neither of them was married to anyone else at the time. By Republican standards of “abstinence only,” Nancy clearly did not say “no.”
  • We covered the rumors of troubles in the marriage of the president and Laura Bush but the evidence of this is spotty.
  • A definite top 10 contender is the Wall Street Journal’s John Fund, a sanctimonius Clinton-hater, who, as reader TL reminds us, “[Apparently] had a fling with the DAUGHTER of someone he was having an affair with and then arranged for (or at least condoned) the abortion of their child.”
  • Back-bencher Rep. Don Sherwood of Pennsylvania, whose adultery with a younger woman was revealed after he tried to strangle her, didn’t make the cut, but someone please tell us he won’t be re-elected. (And thanks, M.H. and others, for the reminder!)
  • Reader Tim pointed out the track record of Rep. Jim Nussle of Iowa, who used his wife and autistic child as family values props then left them for a high-powered lobbyist after he was elected.

Keep ’em coming!

Sick, Sick, Sick. I guess that wives and childern are only good for photo-ops as far as politics are concerned. If I were a—clean– and I repeat–CLEAN– democrat I would hammer this home to my potential constituents. I would point out that a party that practices such wanton hypocricy should not be trusted to run government honestly. Afterall, if you can’t or will not be honest with yourself and your wife then you would probably be far more likely to see nothing wrong with stealing or lying ( and I think we now see the putrid fruits of GOP moral decay before us now). If a GOP politician himself was not a philanderer then use guilt by association. You don’t have to kill someone to be considered a murderer if you associate frequently with murders. I say give it to em high and hard just like they have been sticking to the dems for years. Use their own words and deeds against them. This is no time to be concillatory. The GOP wishes power and they think they have a winner in moral issues. Bash their brains in with it. As far as democrats are concerned—we never claim to be moral titans and usually leave such personal decisions to indivuals to work out. Another quick thought is why not pull a Larry Flynt and have private investigator dig up dirt on these men and show it to world. Let them feel what it is like to be spied on for once.

Henry Hyde not only broke up a marriage, but also fathered a son from his . He did pay child care and, I believe, used him as a tax deduction.

Henry’s wife did not leave him and now that this bastard is grown, has been accepted in the family.

How about that for audacity? Oh my, what willl the children say.

Great, since Republicans are sniffing their opponents’ panties, let’s sniff theirs! Surprise surprise, they’re dirty too! But it’s alright to sniff, because we did not start this, you know, they did, and morever, we don’t ride on the same moral values and we are just calling their hypocrisy. And when we regain power, we’ll put an end to this, because it is just not the way we are. Yes it is: read the comments…

    From Daily Kos:

I’ve got a few additions as well. The most recent is married Republican Representative Don Sherwood of Pennsylvania’s 10th District, who filed court papers on July 21st, denying his abuse of Cynthia Ore. (Think a ‘w’ and an ‘h’ belong in front of that surname??) She’s the Maryland woman he tried to strangle in her apartment and with whom he’s been having a five-year affair. Other self-admitted or otherwise confirmed GOP adulterers are listed below. (Unlike Turdblossom, I do not include rumors in my writing without identifying them as such; you may be assured of accuracy here.)
    Dick Armey, Texas
    Gary Bauer, former presidential candidate
Mary Bono, Calif. (Ex wife of Sonny…after Cher)
Christopher Buckley (Son of William F.)
    Jim Bunn, Oregon
    Jeb Bush, (Governor, Fla.)
    Charles Cannady, Fla.
    Helen Chenoweth, Idaho (IDAHO???)
    John Christensen, Neb.
    Dan Crane, Ill.
Paul Crouch, televangelist (Surprise, surprise, surprise.)
    Kirk Fordice, Miss.
    W. John Hathaway, Maine
Michael Huffington, Calif. (Ex-hubby of Arianna)
    Jack Kemp, New York
    Henry Kissinger (!!)
    Ernie Konnyu, Calif.
    Steve LaTourette, Ohio

To Markmywords, I am so ashamed, of course it isn’t a crime. I forgot King George can do anything, anytime, anywhere, because God talks to him and tells him it is OK. I feel so out of it. I keep thinking that the Constitution means something, and marriage vows mean something, and the law means something. Sheesh silly me. King George the Wise and Powerful has changed all that .

Now the private lives of GOP members is fair game and they can be exposed as the flaming hypocrites they are because the American people DO know all about sex scandals. They don’t know deficits and lobbying rules and stuff like that, but a SEX SCANDAL, they’ve got that down perfectly. Now we can make comparisons between how all this stuff is covered in the press and late night t.v.Bill Clinton’s sex issues seem to pale by comparison.

90 percent of Americans never heard the name Jeff Gannon, the phony “newsman” homosexual prostitute who was planted by Bush in 200 news conferences while such heavyweights as Helen Thomas and Maureen Dowd were banned. Much was made of sleepovers for fundraising by Clinton, but nobody mentions the fact that the he-whore spent 17 nights defiling the Lincoln bedroom. “Hot military stud” 8 inches uncut, 200/hr 1200/weekend according to his website has been hidden from view by the lap dog MSM media. They slavered over every lurid detail of the midnight pizza deliveries and the infamous blue dress, but a scumbag who delivers anal sex for money is completely glossed over. Let’s make the name Jeff Gannon,

My ex boyfriend ran into Neil Bush at a Bangkok child brothel in 1993. Tommy the Matchmaker of the SINGLES Yacht Club in Bethesda introduced me to John McCain in the late 1990s. A coworker and 2 former neighbors told me independently of each other about Bush Sr.’s blonde military attache mistress. Wellstone got whacked by Cheney so the GOP’s Gary Condit, Norm Coleman, could retip the Senate. Coleman has a dead Chandra in his past. Don Sherwood’s whore Ore probably was paid $5 mil because she probably has receipts for abortions. Fetal fascist Henry Hyde’s MANY mistresses probably all had abortions. Gingrich’s adultery was officially blessed by the House Catholic chaplain. Call-girl-ista Gingrich sings in a Catholic choir every Sunday at the “Immaculate” Conception Shrine in NE DC. I’ve considered staging a protest there regarding her “immaculate” adultery. Can you imagine such hypocrite whore as First Lady??

Can’t believe this hasn’t gotten out- Arizona Senate speaker Ken Bennett’s 18 year old son was recently convicted of 18 counts of rape of 11 to 14 year old boys. He and a companion used broomsticks and flashlights to commit these assults at a summer camp. The victims are suffering obvious physical and mental truauma.

The DA’s office- also Republican- first recommended that a prison sentence would not be appropriate in this case. Clifton Bennett was finally sentenced to 30 days in jail. It is entirely appropriate to ask what is going on in the Bennett’s good Republican home that would cause young Bennett to commit such acts.

June 4, 2006 — More on George W. Bush’s “Sanctity of Marriage” gay marriage constitutional ban.

George W. Bush’s marital problems have just taken another turn for the worse. Apparently, Mr. Bush has not only engaged in an extra-marital affair with a member of the opposite sex who is also a senior member of his Cabinet, but also a member of the same sex. WMR received the following release this morning from Leola McConnell, Democratic candidate for Governor of Nevada (who has been endorsed by WMR). McConnell is a one-time professional dominatrix.

“President Bush’s speech to the nation Monday. If he doesn’t say he’s a gay American or at the least a bisexual one then he shouldn’t be making one at all. And the notion that it would be in regards to writing bigotry into our nation’s Constitution is reprehensible. Too bad it isn’t me doing the rebuttal because in 1984, I watched him perform (with the enthusiasm of homosexual male who had done this many times before) a homosexual act on another man, namely Victor Ashe. Victor Ashe is the current Ambassador to the nation of Poland who should also come out like former Governor McGreevey of New Jersey and admit to being a gay American. Other homo-erotic acts were also performed by then private citizen George Bush because I performed one of them on him personally.

I am the woman this website ( speaks of that has been posted on the net nearly two years now. None of this would be the business of anyone but President Bush’s little ruse to save his failed presidency by using DOMA [Defense of Marriage Act] to divide Americans one from the other has to be exposed as the act of a desperate closeted homosexual man. The only crime in being GLBT is in the hiding. The President needs to come clean with the American people about his own past sexual behavior before he tries to besmirch the humanity of people in search of sincerely committing to the same bonds of matrimony he’s afforded. He violated his own vows of monogamy having a homosexual affair with a long time family friend of whom his wife had no knowledge. His hypocrisy seems to know no bounds.

I had planned to run for governor of Nevada without going into any of this but his planned nationally televised address to the nation makes it necessary for me to address his attempt at division in as public a way as he picked to try this Bushification of reality regarding same sex marriages.

    Leola McConnell
Liberal Democratic candidate for Governor of Nevada”
