Fox News Readies ‘Daily Show’ Ripoff Starring Laura Ingraham — We’re Laughing Already

The tipster said, “The writers and producers should be embarassed to show this one to [Fox News Channel CEO Roger Ailes].”

TVNewser is reporting scuttlebutt that the Fox News Channel is prepping a satiric news show to compete with Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show, with Jon Stewart.” According to the TV news blog on the Media Bistro website, the host of the show is radio talk show host and professional Clinton-hater, Laura Ingraham:

An anonymous tipster says Ingraham’s pilot is known as “Watch This Right Now.” The tipster calls it “an absolutely terrible rip off of Daily Show” including a “music and video montage” and “mouth replacement of known news figures.” (Huh?) “They want to keep it a secret so they hired all freelance tech people,” the tipster adds. “The writers and producers should be embarassed to show this one to Roger.”

If I were compelled to come up with a one-word description of Ingraham, the word would be “humorless.” In all the years she has been in the public eye, I can’t think of a single funny thing she has said. Does she think she’s funny? Maybe. Here is how Ingraham describes an exchange from her radio show that she remembers as being “hysterical,” in which she punked an anti-war activist who hadn’t read up on Ingraham’s pro-Bush, pro-war stance:

One of the most hysterical exchanges I’ve had is with Maya Jones, who represents an anti-war group called Not In Our Name. I tried to debate her, and she said, “You really should tell people who are coming on if you’re not going to agree with them. I came on to promote the anti-war march, and I only have a few more minutes left.” She finally hung up on us.

OMG! LOL! Can you stand it?? Those liberals, huh? Can’t live with ‘em, can’t shoot ‘em.

But seriously, to be a conservative means being born missing a funny bone, a handicap that renders them unable to perceive irony. Besides, as defenders of the status quo, it is the role of the rightwing to be the targets of satire. When they try to turn it around and take aim at the liberal establishment, they invevitably start taking potshots at minority groups or women, opening them up to charges of racism, homophobia and paternalism. As comedy goes, they might get away with potshots at the unfortunate — if only it were funny.

Think about it: The most successful conservative comedian these days is, of course, Rush Limbaugh. But Limbaugh’s humor, such as it is, never makes even his most ardent fans laugh, it makes them smirk.

Apparently someone at Fox News believes Laura Ingraham is funnier than Limbaugh — as funny, in fact, as Jon Stewart and his team of Emmy Award-winning writers. I have my doubts. On her current radio show, she once ladled on sound effects from “Ace Ventura, Pet Detective” to provide a humorous edge. Hilarous! If only Jim Carrey were popular in France, he would be the Jerry Lewis of our day.

Time will only tell whether Laura Ingraham is our next Jon Stewart — or just another Tucker Carlson flaming out in slo-mo on cable news.

You know, I can’t believe even the low IQ neanderthal Fox viewers would find this entertaining. Who knows, maybe I’m wrong

  2. Bill Arnett June 24, 2006 @ 8:17 am

Sorry, Marty, I must respectfully disagree-I believe there are PLENTY of Faux News viewers with IQs sufficiently low to find Laura Ingrahm to be hysterically funny-even if they just judge her by her appearance.

  3. j7915 June 24, 2006 @ 8:18 am

Marty, you are obviously not living in the “American Heartland”.

  4. b June 24, 2006 @ 8:41 am

So the Daily Show makes one laugh and gape by showing real news clips of conservative idiots, and these people will make us laugh at ‘liberals’ by replacing their mouths and dialog with lies?
    That’s funny?

  5. Paul Jensen June 24, 2006 @ 9:12 am

Besides the fact that the people involved with “The Daily Show” are extremely talented comedians, one other significant reason the show works so well is because it exposes the deceptions and inanity of all political sides, liberal and conservative. If viewers recall, when Clinton was in office, the show did a great job of making fun of the administration’s political blunders. The reason the show has thrived tremendously during the Bush administration’s run is, of course, because there is so much more deceptive and inane material with which to work. I mean, how many times has Jon Stewart given his well-known smirk, the one that says the news he is about to reveal is too easy and almost too dumb to be true, before going into another story about Bush or someone else on the right?

But as anyone who has been in the entertainment world understands, comedy is by far the most difficult field in which to succeed. And I can’t imagine anyone at the Fox Network having anything close to the talent needed for a successful political comedy show. So I hope the network will try, for it will only expose more inanity from people who claim to be “fair and balanced.” We’ve all seen a comic die on stage – it is very tough and painful to watch. However, watching the Fox Network die on stage will be very rewarding and, ironically, funny.

  6. william June 24, 2006 @ 9:34 am

Laura had better get the banana peels and Punch and Judy puppet theatre ready, because that is the only things repukes have the cognitive capacity to laugh at…unless you include the Nick Berg beheading video

  7. Larry June 24, 2006 @ 10:04 am

I agree LI is not funny. Jon Ponder, now he’s funny! That was rich, good job…

  8. Ginger Winchester June 24, 2006 @ 10:06 am

Jon Stewart makes fun of both liberals and conservatives – and that’s what makes him so fun to watch. He doesn’t have to make most of his stuff up, because the painful truth about the Bush administration is often funny enough. It writes itself.

I sincerely doubt Laura Ingraham will provide a balanced perspective – especially if “fair and balanced” Faux News has any say in what gets on the air.

Laura is another Ann Coulter-wannabe. She thinks she’s funny because, in her tiny little mind, she thinks there’s something to laugh at when you look at all the people who’ve been hurt by this administration’s policies.

Jon Stewart takes what makes you wanna cry and turns it around so you can laugh at the irony in what’s going on. You can’t do that when you’re making the bad guys look like the hero, and the victims look like fools. That’s not funny – that’s just plain cruel.

  9. fkay June 24, 2006 @ 10:07 am

  11. STParker June 24, 2006 @ 11:04 am

The funniest “conservative” show on television is Southpark and even it is invariably unfunny when it takes potshots at liberals.

  12. Somebody June 24, 2006 @ 11:07 am

It’s going to be fun watching them make royal fools of themselves.

  13. ravebyron June 24, 2006 @ 11:49 am

I wanna see Laura go into the tent with Coulter, and come out wearing the eyepatch.

  14. Richard M. Cheney June 24, 2006 @ 12:06 pm

You have to understand: Laura is trading on her handsome, spring-of-her-middle-age near-good looks to bring “gravitas” to her comedic stylings. She is without question the Katie Couric of D-list conservative pundits; the biggest laugh she ever got was helping the thugs at the Dartmouth Review tear down a protest “shantytown” that her fellow students had constructed to protest apartheid (something she apparently liked) in South Africa back in the day. What a card!

  15. Madison June 24, 2006 @ 12:39 pm

Back in college, Laura was quite a prankster. Once she infiltrated a gay rights group in order to out its members in a conservative student newspaper. She went so far as to secretly tape a meeting of the Gay Students Association, then published the transcript, identifying students by name and calling them “sodomites.”

    What a card!

  16. Colin Feeney June 24, 2006 @ 12:50 pm

And don’t forget the blurb about Ms. Laura years ago in George magazine.

You know, the one where she broke into an ex-boyfriend’s apartment and emptied the contents of a fire exghinguisher all over the place to get back at him after being dumped.

Now THAT’S loads of fun for the whole family.

  17. Doctor B June 24, 2006 @ 3:21 pm

She needs a boob job. (Have you seen Katherine Harris lately? If I were drunk enough I might do her.)

  18. Hoopydoo June 24, 2006 @ 3:57 pm

Way to GO Doctor B! Great comment! Making fun of a breast cancer survivor with a comment about her breast size. Laura just finished chemo treatment only a few months ago….you’re a jerk.

  19. ReaganDemocrat June 24, 2006 @ 4:38 pm

Hoopydoo – I believe you just proved the distinguished Dr. B’s point.

But what explains the fact that she seems to speak through her nose?

  20. A.Political June 24, 2006 @ 5:55 pm

Hoopydoo, relax….I’m sure they weren’t intentionally making light of the cancer aspect, in fact they prob never knew….oh and my mom is breast cancer survivor.

  21. Montag June 24, 2006 @ 6:40 pm

Actually, there is a precedent for this scheme. When Joseph Goebbels was made Nazi Gauleiter of Berlin in 1927 he started a weekly newspaper called, “Der Angriff.” (The Assault) Problem was, it was a major snooze that Nazi Party members subscribed to, but didn’t read! Goebbels himself condemned it: “What a miserable provincial sheet!” he admitted. “Baloney in print!” But Goebbels was able to transform it into a going concern by copying the make-up and content of the Communist Party paper.

I think Ingraham’s effort will fail because she can ape Stewart’s format, but not his style. I’ve heard her radio show and it is a royal pain to try to stay interested. It’s all shuck and jive without any intellectual engagement.

  22. Ken June 24, 2006 @ 7:04 pm

More dumbing down of the troglodytes. How low can the 29% go?

  23. TX Yellowdog June 24, 2006 @ 7:33 pm

Oh the Hitler youth corps will watch it – the young folk who don’t “get” John Stewart. They were raised believing things are only funny if you make fun of others. An elderly woman slipping on ice is hysterical. A joke pointed at them deserves 21 gun salute, directed at the joke teller.

Keith Olbermann & John Stewart will get tons of materialf from this show. Won’t even have to look elsewhere.

  24. Redleg June 24, 2006 @ 8:20 pm

Laura is a hottie- until she opens her lying conservative mouth.

  25. I’m reminded of a scene from A Hard Day’s Night where a lady from a talent agency, not knowing who he is, tries to get George to be a model, & they’re talking about some current British model (Tina or something?) & George mentions how he & his mates watch her on the tele & make fun of her!

The mockery potential for LI would be limitless!

  26. Jack June 25, 2006 @ 12:36 am

ha ha ha theres no way this chick is gonna do better than stewart… so maybe fox will make another reality tv show called Compete with stewart… and well no one will win…

  27. Greg Bacon June 25, 2006 @ 12:52 am

Methinks Laura Ingraham’s TV parody show has been given burial rites way too soon.
Remember, this is coming from FAUX and they are pros at using TV to brainwash millions.
Plus, the show will probably have Frau Ingraham follow the FAUX studio format: She’ll be dressed in a mini-skirt to show off an ample amount of thigh and give off provocative body language during the BROADcast.
And like the FAUX blonde bimbos, Laura and her thighs won’t be hidden by a desk.
To prove part of this assertion, just look at the above photo of Laura.
She’s got that “come hither” look on her face, just daring the brain dead to fantasize about doing her.

If i were a betting man, i’d bet on her show succeeding.

Now, if you’ll pardon me, i’m late for my goose-stepping lesson.

  28. Charles June 25, 2006 @ 12:53 am

Laura never shuts her mouth. Look at every photo, she does an open mouth smile or has lips parted showing a little teeth when she’s not smiling. Every photo that she knows is being taken has that gods awful posed look.

As to her humor, listen to any segment called “lie to me” or something like that. She plays a clip she disagrees with, but offers no facts to support the statement as a lie. Granted, for Conservatives count as lying, you have to prove they’re not incompetant and knew what they were saying was BS. Such standards are not required for Liberals to be called liars by Laura.

Shame about her chemo. Her hair was nice, and the wig (was it a wig) she wore on the Today Show looked bad. I’d give her credit for being a cancer survivor, but until she disowns the statements of Coulter’s regarding people of tragedy have no standing to speak regarding that tragedy, then Laura gets no respect from me. Granted, her loathsome statements on the Today show did that. Wow, she toured the Green Zone in Iraq for 6 days. Color me bored.

  29. Jack Hughes June 25, 2006 @ 8:52 am

Hopefully, they’ll include a laugh track so the Fox Friends will know when to laugh.

  30. karena June 25, 2006 @ 8:54 am

Actually, I’ll find it pretty funny to see Laura attempt conservative humor. Some of the stunts of the Young College Republicans are so infantile, like handing out french fries to protest a speaking engagement by the author of Fast Food Nation or handing out snow cones for “Global Freezing” day. They make such asses of themselves it will be interesting to see them trying to compete in comedy. Laura tells musicians to “Shut up and Sing” and this show will make lefties say “Shut up and Bitch on the Radio.”

  31. Sandy Price June 25, 2006 @ 9:05 am

Jack Hughes, you beat me to the comment that Fox will need a laugh track. The humor from Jon Stewart matches mine but after being a Republican for so many years and only just disovering they have no funny bone, I can’t imagine Laura or anyone doing a comedy show.

Our political scene is so tragic that unless we can laugh at something we may all go flaming mad.

One of the funniest things I ever saw on television was back when “Politically Incorrect” was still on Comedy Central–it was during the one of the (presidential) conventions in ‘96. Chris Rock was a ‘correspondent’. Ingraham was a guest back in the studio. She went on some hate-filled rant about Dems, Clinton, Liberals, etc. She was her usual vile self. Shortly after she finished, Bill Maher goes to Chris Rock–on location at whatever convention he was covering. First words out of his mouth? “Damn, she’s (Ingraham) a mean bitch!”

    Now, that is HILARIOUS.

Thank God I taped it…truly one of the greatest and most honest moments in television history!

  34. liz June 25, 2006 @ 8:45 pm

    One other thought:

Comedy from a network that promises to “report and [let] you decide” and that they are “fair and balanced”.

Based on those two examples, we can all be assured that their ‘comedy’ will not be funny either.

It’s an Orwell world over there, folks!

  35. WBushTheMonkey June 26, 2006 @ 6:00 am

Laura Ingraham-cracker had breast cancer? And survived? Now THAT’s a glass that’s 1/2 EMPTY!

  36. Chas June 26, 2006 @ 9:23 am

Laura can have Annie on as a roving reporter in a regular feature that follows and makes fun of 9/22 widows. That’d be funny, huh?

The show, if it does come to fruition, will only provide more fodder for the show it seeks to make fun of.

  37. Damail June 26, 2006 @ 10:09 am

Laura Ingraham has one of the funniest, most insightful, most entertaining talk shows in America. And I see one of the previous posters has insinuated that Laura should have died from her bout with cancer. Must have been the same thug who posted on Democratic Blunderground how Laura should have died on the operating table. It really is amazing how full of hate the radical left is.

  38. Leo Belldaere June 26, 2006 @ 10:45 am

So this is how Fox News thinks it will save its sagging-ass ratings?

Isn’t she the same woman who was ridiculed on the West Wing, and was so bad that her TV show was cancelled after 3 appearances?

  39. mediacritic June 26, 2006 @ 3:11 pm

I can’t wait to see it. It will be a spectacular disaster.

  40. Madison June 26, 2006 @ 4:49 pm

Right, Damail. Why don’t you wander back under the bridge to Freeperville and check out the vile and nasty things your fellow Bush lovers have said about folks like Michael Moore and Cindy Sheehan.

    Gimme a break.

  41. captainscotty June 27, 2006 @ 1:18 am

Hey; Damail nice tongue & cheek comment. Looks like you could be the first person that this wannabe interviewer. This show will be like the Hindenberg going up in flames. People like Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have become the true hero`s`of the game generation.

It`s sad that some will find this fauxnews bull real.

    Long live free speach.

  42. Dave99 July 15, 2006 @ 10:44 pm

I accidentally spun by her radio show and she played a clip of Brokaw talking about the NYT leak and he was just saying how the Times seems to think they’re right and the white house seems to think they’re right but that’s one of the great things about a democratic republic – you hash it all out and settle it. It was a very reasonable comment.

Soooo…she comes back with some rant about OOOOOH, there goes another member of the elite, left-wing media BOYS club! And, I was all WTF? Where did that come from?

So much hate. She and Coulter and the like are so far detached. Raw hate isn’t funny.

  43. MyPetGloat July 19, 2006 @ 1:42 pm

Maybe the show will be a remake of M*A*S*H.
The fake laugh tracks will be there but they’ll use real wounded.

  44. dave July 22, 2006 @ 2:23 pm

Leo – Fox News sagging ratings – you must be talking about messnbc or cnn – there you can find sagging ratings pal

  45. dave July 22, 2006 @ 2:54 pm

Damail – right on brother – these lefties are in for a big suprise.

  46. dave July 22, 2006 @ 3:08 pm

Madison: Cindy and Mike deserve what they get.

  47. ken July 24, 2006 @ 2:14 am

The funniest thing about this article and the comments is the fact that you buy into the notion that such a show will be made… proving further how ready you are to believe anything you’d like to believe.

  48. Jim October 7, 2006 @ 9:45 am

I enjoyed reading the leftie propagandists above. These left-wing Hugo Chavez lovers (significant others) should listen to Michael Savage for help. Just a bunch of hate-mongers. The Democrat Bolshevists Party does not have any plans or ideas. Ask them what they would do if elected…
What’s your plan for Iraq? Strategic withdrawal to America and hate Bush.
What’s your plan for the economy? Raise taxes and hate Bush.
    Illegal immigration? Hate Bush.
Voter identification (to prevent Democratics from stealing elections)? You’re a racist and hate Bush…..

  49. Rick December 19, 2006 @ 12:16 pm

I WILL NEVER WATCH THAT KIND OF TRASH,THAT SHE WOULD PUT OUT! Shes barely funny,JUST VILE

  50. bob January 26, 2007 @ 2:13 pm

Seems that everyone has made up their minds about Laura and the potential show, all negative. How can you rate something that has not been on?? The commenters seem to be fairly full of hate over something…?

  51. Freedom-Rainbow February 26, 2007 @ 9:40 am

We conservatives do not need Jon Stewart making the same face and mugging for the camera – which is all he does – (TDS was much funnier with Craig Kilborn and you probably weren’t even watching it then,) when we have liberals marching around with homemade signs portraying Bush with little horns or Hitler mustaches, spewing bumper sticker slogans, singing their little folk songs and banging on their little drums – THAT is funny enough. You people are hilarious and you don’t even know it because you take yourselves so seriously and yet you look like clowns! You take puppets seriously for Chrissakes! Puppets!! Maybe conservatives haven’t cultivated that biting humor that you love so much b/c while you were perfecting your snappy acerbic one-liners, we were going to parties and playing sports. When you spend 4 years being rejected and relegated to the drama department area or under some bleachers somewhere where it’s perfectly acceptable to show off your cutter scars or talk about how your parents “suck” because they’ve ignored you (or worse) all of your life- it gives you lots of time to cultivate that anger and resentment and channel it into an angry “wit”. We’re still undaunted by it. Conservatives watch shows like “American Dad” and “The Colbert Report” and we actually think they’re funny because we are able to laugh at ourselves. We get the humor and we don’t take it to heart because our parents loved us. You all can’t take any ribbing (hence the panning of a conservative comedy show before you’ve seen it) because it rings all too true to you. You get angry. It becomes personal because it reminds you that you are still that cutter boy or girl hanging out by the drama dept NOT getting asked out by any good looking classmate. It’s sad. You need to let it go. And btw: the most popular commedian in the world right now is a conservative and a very devout Christian by the name of Larry the Cable Guy.

  52. Madison February 26, 2007 @ 10:35 am

Freedom Rainbow, based on what you’ve said here we can stipulate your firsthand experience in taking yourself seriously and coming off like a clown.

The fact is, the last successful conservative comic was Bob Hope, whose style has not stood the test of time. Like Hope, Larry the Cable guy is not funny either. The show referred to here, after being retooled several tiems, is out now and is so bad that Rush Limbaugh was caught begging his Dittoheads to watch it so it wouldn’t be canceled.

If conservatives were capable of humor, there would be an audience for it. If there were an audience for it, it would be on television. That’s part of a system we liberals like to call capitalism’s law of supply and demand.

  53. luqe October 1, 2007 @ 2:59 pm

“If conservatives were capable of humor, there would be an audience for it. If there were an audience for it, it would be on television. That’s part of a system we liberals like to call capitalism’s law of supply and demand.”
    –Madison, Feb. 26, 2007, 10:35 am

Oh, really? So I guess that means you’re willing to apply ‘capitalism’s law of supply and demand’ to the arena of talk radio, a medium in which (unlike in television, Internet, and print media) liberals have failed to find an audience, right? I mean, you liberals wouldn’t go and violate the First Amendment with some kind of…”fairness doctrine,” right?…Right?

  58. colonel A February 13, 2009 @ 9:23 pm

This is really funny. All of these liberals worrying about Laura telling the truth. She might even say the “J” word(Jesus). Or say something with substance about the “C” word(Christians). Oh No! Another good looking, smart, conservative woman. Can you say Sarah Palin? Give ‘em Hell Laura!! All of the Military guys are behind you!

  59. JC April 26, 2009 @ 8:24 pm

Is this what liberals do is sit around worrying about what conservatives are doing? You better start watching what your chosen one is doing, he is destroying the country right beneath your noses! WAKE UP AND SMELL THE… WELL… ITS NOT COFFEE!
