The event staged by the White House today to announce the president’s veto of the embryonic stem cell research bill was one of the most obscenely crass political displays of the Bush presidency, and that is saying a lot.
In a cynical attempt to focus the public’s attention away from the estimated 100 million, mostly adult Americans suffering from diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s who might have benefited from the research, the president’s political operatives filled the room with a dozen or so “snowflake” children who were born from frozen embryos reclaimed from fertility clinics.
The craven use of these children as political props became acutely ironic when Bush said of them, “These boys and girls are not spare parts.”
Indeed, the children were not spare parts — they were red herrings. What the White House did not want the public to know was that the potentially life-saving research the president vetoed would have been performed only on embryos slated to be destroyed because their infertile parents no longer need them.
Prior to the staged event, cameras weren’t allowed in the room when President Bush actually signed the veto, which was the first of his six-year presidency. Nearly two-thirds of Americans support embryonic stem cell research, and with midterm elections just four months away, Karl Rove and the president’s political team did not want clips of the president signing the veto showing up in Democrats’ campaign ads.
If God is vengeful, She will smite President Bush with an illness that can only be cured by stem cells from discarded embryos.

Worst President (and Party) Ever.
Hypocrites,liars, cheaters, thieves,
war profitiers, war criminals, fascists.
Any qiestions?
Wish Helen Thomas had been in that room. Bet she would’ve asked Bush about all the people Bush is dooming to possibly unecessary disease or death because he loathes science so much. What an empty-headed buffoon.
I’m sure they will justify not having the media in that they did not want to have the veto turn into one of their meaningless photo-ops…but have it based solely on principle…
Regarding the so-called “snowflake babies,” W. declaimed, “These boys and girls are not expendable.” So how can he blithely blow off the men and women serving in Iraq–as well as Iraqis of all ages–as collateral damage, roadkill, amputees, and permanent sufferers of PTSD?
As my dad used to say, “It’s all a question of whose ox is being gored.” Not Pierce, Jebbie, George P., Jenna, or Not-Jenna Bush. Not the Frist or Rove or Quayle offspring of military age…
The expensively produced spawn of overwhelmingly white, affluent parents, whose issue are frozen as clumps of cells in a Petri dish, are presumed to have more “right to [potential] life” than the thousands upon thousands of our world’s fellow post-blastocytes. Who were born only to be maimed or killed in an unprovoked war…

Just as Karl Rove promised, George W. Bush used his first official veto to put the kibosh on the expansion of stem cell research, putting a huge exclamation point on the renunciation of science and further sinking the country into the regressive quagmire that has been a shameful pox upon us all since the ascension of le enfant terrible to the throne. Surrounded by 18 families with so called ’snowflake’ babies who served as more of the usual convenient stage props that this hoax of an administration is so fond of using Bush shamelessly proclaimed:
“It crosses a moral boundary that our decent society needs to respect, so I vetoed it”
How much do you want to bet that if Bush was touting the expansion of such research that Rove and his cohorts would have been able to easily round up a room full of quadriplegics, paraplegics and Alzheimers ravaged victims to use as stage dressing. In a word that Bush has proven to be very fond of in recent days the whole thing smelled like more of the same shit.
This is a wake up call America;your president does not give a fat rats ass about you or your family. He would rather you die or suffer endlessly to appease a handful of religous nutcases.I’m willing to bet though that if his wife or one of his brats would have benefitted from this,he would not have been able to get that pen out fast enough
Too bad there isn’t a cure for his being a total loser, and absolute idiot. Some kind of transplant as in a new brain.
People are finally getting the message that the only one he cares about is himself and the idiots that vote for him.
When you’re sinking as fast as Bush, rallying your ignorant, narrow-minded base is about all there is left. He doesn’t give a rats-ass about governing - all he wants to do is rule.
The whole “spare parts” comment was a blatant attempt to mislead people into confusing stem-cell research with human-cloning. The vetoed legislation had absolutely nothing to do with cultivating embryos for spare parts.
There are 400,000 unwanted frozen embryos being stored in this country (many thousands more have already been disposed). So far, there are only 100 of these so-called “snowflake children”, with a couple dozen more on the way. Therefore, any given embryo only has a 1/300th of 1% chance of being “adopted”. Moreover, there are 500,000 living, breathing children awaiting actual adoption in this country.
So, if these people truly believe a frozen embryo is a person, and that person has a 99.97% chance of being destroyed, shouldn’t Bush be blocking funding for the fertility research and treatments that are producing all the unwanted embryos?
This photo-op made my skin crawl. It goes beyond crass. It is sickening.
Snow runs deep with this guy. First Tony Snow, now “snowflakes”. What were Rove and Bush doing behind closed doors? Maybe a variation on this theme?
skin crawl - exactly what I felt. I suspect we are NOT in the minority, either. Time will tell.
Not to forget the snow that he snorted back when.
Bush is a success! Not as far as ordinary folk like you and me are concerned, maybe, but for the Big Money that put him in power, he has done what was needed. He’s allowed corporations to regulate themselves, he’s made the average American distrust government spending, and he’s opened the way to mass rape of the general population by the large corporate entities by concentrating power in the Puppet-in-Chief’s office, blithely disregarding the Constitution and the law of the land and removing all checks and balances.
The fact that he’s made America and Americans loathed around the world, has promoted the most dismal failures in US foreign policy in history, and has destroyed all semblance of moral credibility is irrelevant. George II has achieved the goals set for him - now he can be safely eliminated by the puppetmasters before he starts to talk.
We as a family are so Thankful for the Snowflake program without the snowflake program women who are unable to concieve would not be able to ever bear a child due to a early diagnosis. You have no idea what kind of emotional pain it causes a woman and the marriage when a woman is unable to conceive and through the Snowflake program we are now able to carry and give a child life. Bravo President Bush for preserving life in AMerica and allowing this opportunity to families!!!!
Read up and don’t just take what the media says about this bill.
