Mr. Roberts, many of those who didn’t evacuate had nowhere to go and no money to do so, just as some didn’t want to be choppered out after, because they thought they’d have to pay for it. Maybe some did have parties, but they may have been “black humor” (if you’ll pardon the expression), trying to deal with the fear of the danger they couldn’t avoid.

The Santorum quote was actually sane. Many people decided to ride out the storm because they thought it would be fun. Evacuations had been ordered before and nothing happened then, so they bought hoagies (alright, this is NO so they probably bought gumbo) and had hurricane parties. Then, the national guard and other rescue organizations had to come in and haul them out by helicopter and boat and then to get shot at for their trouble. It’s not right to expect strangers to risk their lives for you because you made a stupid decision.

Federal $$ for assistance should come with the understanding that when this happens again 5 years from now–you’re on your own. Why the hell anyone would think it’s ok to rebuild down there is just sheer stupidity. No more handouts for idiots who CHOSE to live in areas that WILL be hit by natural disasters. Same goes for Florida–ya wanna live in some high priced beach area–fine–buy enough insurance to handle rebuilding yourself.
