Bush Adding Signing Statement to Geneva Conventions

It worked the first 750 times: You know about Bush’s signing statements: First, he signs a bill passed by both houses of Congress, the people’s representatives. Next, he signs a statement that cancels out, reverses, ignores, or undermines the letter and intent of that bill.

Since this technique has worked so well for Mr. Bush, allowing him to run things as he — and he alone — sees fit, why not expand it beyond domestic policy to international law?

Don’t like Article III of the Geneva Conventions? No problem! Just issue a clarification — aka signing statement — that says we’ll do whatever the hell we want, and the world can’t stop us because… Well, just because.

I think we should all do this. Got a hangover? Call work and say you’re sick, then sign a statement authorizing yourself to define “sick.” Having an affair? Swear to your spouse you’re true blue, then sign a statement authorizing yourself to clarify “monogamy.” Go ahead, it’s easy. I’m signing one right now authorizing myself to define “president.” Then I’m sending an email to Al Gore.

It’s a nice idea, though I suspect he’s on his way even without such help. For example, I’ve found that sending the following link to Republican/Independent small business owners very effective.

If the Democrats do not take over in the November election, this country will be irretrievably broken down. There will be no going back and Bush will give himself ultimate power!!!!

    Don’t hold your breath Cheryl.
The Democrats aren’t going to win. This isn’t about resigning myself to giving up; it’s about the reality of present-day Amerika. The electoral system is totally broken when a group of respected people from a major university can issue a report that shows how easily the machines being used in elections can be hacked and that information is not the subject of three inch high headlines in every major paper across the country.

It is, instead, relegated to the realm of conspiracy theory, that wonderful term that the Texas boys coined more than 40 years ago when Mark Lane and others started raising serious questions about the Warren Commission report. It’s worked so well for so long that “they” will never stop using it and the Amerikan people will walk quietly to the trains for the trip to the camps.
They’re already getting ready to seal the borders by requiring passports for travel to and from Canada, Mexico, and Carribean cruises. That is NOT designed to keep terrorists out; it’s designed to keep people in. That, plus a major devaluation of the currency should make it difficult enough for ordinary folks to stop thinking of emigrating to someplace sane–like Russia or Romania. Imagine that.

    right on, matt…

at *what* level of flipping our pitiful elections will rethugs have pangs of conscience ? if it is 51-49% and they flip 2 points? do that in their sleep… 60-40% ? hardly breathing hard… 99-1% ? diabolical, yet doable…

the repugnacans are continuing (with dem’rats complicit) to promote and ‘legalize’ full-spectrum votefraud…

don’t i remember being taught *something* in civics about ‘gerrymandering’ when i was kid ?
now, that corrupt practice is codified and legalized such that rethugs and dem’rats can carve up the most tortured district boundaries in order to maintain a majority…

(should follow county boundaries, as far as i’m concerned…)

you are right: that the mainstream media *doesn’t* FINALLY wake up and smell the votefraud when even mainstream experts are decrying the computer-based voting systems, is surely conclusive evidence that the mainstream media is not only not ‘liberal’ (*ptui*), but totally uninterested in civic issues of paramount importance…

isn’t it about time for another cute white grrl to go missing ?
