2006 Terry Dolan Award Seeks to Name Biggest Gay Republican Hypocrite

History will remember 2006 as the Year of the Gay Republican. From Mark Foley to Ken Mehlman, from Pastor Ted Haggard to over 200 gay Capitol Hill staffers on “The List,” the sheer volume of queers in Republican corridors of power has surprised even the most cynical observers of the Gay Old Party.

Of course, self-hating gays are not new to Republican politics. During the McCarthy era, homo-miscreant Roy Cohn helped persecute gays working for the government. Even the eponymous Sen. Joe McCarthy was allegedly gay.

But the most extravagant example of a Republican self-hating homo may well have been the Reagan era “New Republican” operative, Terry Dolan. A rabid homophobe by day, at night, Mr. Dolan allegedly prowled D.C. leather bars for what was then known as “rough trade.” (See bio in sidebar.)

In the craven spirit of the late Mr. Dolan, we propose the awarding of the 2006 Terry Dolan Award to (dis)honor the gay Republican who has done the most to harm to the cause of gay civil rights in the past few years.

To wit, a partial list of nominees:

Josh Bolten (alleged), White House Chief of Staff: Over 50 confirmed bachelor who was once escorted by frequent GOP beard Bo Derek to a Washington social event. Bolten is a top advisor to President Bush who ensures that the administration’s anti-gay efforts run smoothly.

Mary Cheney, daughter of Vice President Cheney: A political operative with unparalleled connections to the most powerful member of the Bush Administration who has never failed to be a useful tool in support of the Republicans’ anti-gay agenda.

Charlie Crist (alleged and denied), Gov.-Elect of Florida: Known early in his career for his fetish for chain gangs, Crist ran for governor this year on a platform that included a ban on gay marriage and continuing the state’s ban on gay adoption.

David Dreir (alleged), U.S. Congressman: Drier voted for the Marriage Protection Act which would have stripped federal courts of jurisdiction over challenges to the Defense of Marriage Act, which bans the federal government from recognizing gay partnerships, which he also voted against in 1996. He also voted against a measure that banned gays from adopting in Washington, D.C., and he has a 92 percent favorability rating from the Christian Coalition.

Matt Drudge, conservative website publisher: The Drudge Report is the online outlet of the Republicans’ propaganda machine, and Drudge’s own homosexuality never hinders him from towing the party line on gay rights. Most recently, he said that Mark Foley’s young accusers were “egging him on” with their emails.

Mark Foley, former U.S. Congressman: The proverbial chickenhawk in the chicken coop among the House pages, Rep. Foley’s sexuality was an open secret in political circles but whether the Republican leadership knew he had a penchant for teenaged boys is yet to be determined.

Jeff Gannon, former hooker and White House correspondent: His real names is James Guckert and his nom de sidewalk was “Bulldog” — whatever you call him, Gannon was a very popular guy in the Bush White House. Secret Service records show that, posing as a reporter for an ultraright online publication, Bulldog visited the White House over 200 times in two years.

Ted Haggard, former head of the National Evangelical Association and former pastor of the New Life Church: Haggard preached against homosexuality and campaigned for an anti-gay amendment in his home state of Colorado, while simultaneously buying sex from at least one male escort.

Ken Mehlman (alleged and denied), outgoing chairman of the Republican National Committee: A craven pol who will do or say anything in support of Republican causes. Mehlman has denied he his gay but has also refused to come out as a heterosexual.

Armstrong Williams, former pundit and columnist: His reputation is in the tank, not because he reliably spouts the anti-gay line of the Republican Party but because he took a bribe from the Bush administration to write columns in support of policies that he would have written for free even without their filthy lucre.

PS. If anyone on the list feels that his or her name should not be on the list, he or she should let us know by coming out as a heterosexual.

How many prominent anti-gay gay Neo-Conservatives have to be outed before Republicans face up to the hypocrisy of their platform?

There’s Senator Larry Craig, Congressman Mark Foley, Reverand Ted Haggard, NCPAC head Terry Dolan, Congressman David Dreier, cub reporter James Gannon, RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman, Mayor Jim West, commentator Armstrong Williams, Governor-elect of Florida Charlie Crist, White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten, Mary Cheney, Matt Drudge, etc, etc, etc… current and former senior staffers for people like Katherine Harris, Henry Hyde, Bill Frist, George Allen, Mitch McConnell, AND Rick “Man on Dog” Santorum. And this doesn’t even scratch the surface of “The List”- a compendium of over 200 gay Republicans working just on Capitol Hill alone.

At this point, the Bea Arthur fan club is straighter than the GOP.

Oh, and Mr. Rove, don’t think retiring will take the spotlight off of you either.
