We have been suggesting for a while that Vice Pres. Cheney would step down early this year — due to “health problems” or boredom with government. Now there’s a new swirl of rumors going around.
Our prediction has been than GOP graybeards and powers-that-be would force Pres. Bush to appoint a Republican politician as vice president who would be an electable presidential candidate in 2008. The obvious choice would be St. John McCain, in spite of the fact that Bush and McCain famously loathe each other.
But the new vice president mentioned consistently in the rumor mill is Sec. of State Condoleeza Rice.
It makes sense that Bush would choose the worst possible person for the second-highest job in the land (after all, he’s done it before). Rice has proven to be a disaster in both roles she has played in the Bush Administration. She was the national security adviser who ignored an intelligence report from August 2001, titled “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.†As secretary of state, her diplomatic efforts have had lackluster results.
With that record of incompetence, a Medal of Freedom is not sufficient. This woman deserves a promotion!
Rice would be a “Harriet Miers” sort of choice for vice president — someone Bush is “comfortable with” but who is wholly unqualified for the job.
But Condoleeza Rice is unelectable as president. For one thing, the GOP can’t win without taking every Red state Bush won in 2004. Where there are Red states, there are racists who would never vote for a black candidate, especially a female — especially an unmarried female about whom there are gay rumors. Secondly, she’d never get votes from independents because of her deep involvement in the failure of the Iraq war.
If Cheney resigns, Bush is going to face intense pressure from GOP senior election officials, strategists and big donors to replace him with the person whom they believe to be the most electable candidate out there. Despite Rudolph Giuliani’s high polling right now, in the Beltway Republican mindset, the frontrunner is John McCain, so I still believe that’s who they will push.
Of course, there’s a compromise candidate out there, waiting in the wings. Someone who’s got the experience, who left office with a high approval rating, despite his last name — someone who might appeal both to the boy king and his mininons and courtiers:
Jeb.

I recently heard somewhere that following JFK’s appointment of his brother as U.S. Attorney General, that a law was passed preventing family members from being appointed to high government office.
Can anyone substantiate this?
You left out another factor in Cheney’s possible resignation, although you alluded to it in an earlier post. I think Bush’s anti-gay policies actually do get under Dick’s skin. I think he’s about ready to tell George and all the other small-minded, snooping, hypocritical bastards to shove it.

Nancy Pelosi needs to retract “impeachment is off the table.” Bush and Cheney both need to be impeached and convicted…what a duet of losers…I believe that Bush ought to appoint John Kerry as VP when Dr. Evil resigns…The Democrats are going to whip ass in 2008 and there WILL be a Democratic President…it is about time!!
Jesus, is this a hoot. Rice is popular with the Republican base. Nobody will care what your activist base thinks of her; she’s popular in the country.
Basically, the more you peddle the hate, the more popular she becomes. It’s very much like Bill. Recently, she’s gotten bad press from the same crowd who wanted to sell the Israelis out to the Persian Nazis. Rice didn’t do that, so the appeasement crowd over at the DNC blew a gasket.
Cheney is radioactive right now and has blown his mojo. Meantime, Condi’s Iranian policy appears to be paying off, just as the libs are lining up to call her “incompetent”. Ahmadhi-Nejad is in deep trouble with the Council of Guardians and it looks as if he could be deposed within a year.
Time to grab another meme, boys. Don’t count on Jeb, btw. Wrong last name.
It’s interesting that even the Bush worship cult now realizes that Cheney is “radioactive.” Next they’ll blame him for Bush’s entire record of incompetence. After all, Dear Leader is infallable. He speaks with God, who divinely inspires his every decision.
The idea that Condi had anything to do with Ahmadinejad’s domestic troubles in Iran is the real “hoot.” She literally could not negotiate her way out of a paper bag. Condoleeza Rice is hands-down the most incompetent secretary of state in our history.
And if by “the country” you mean she is popular in Red states, forget it. No black person, even a black Republican, is going to take South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Kansas, Utah or Idaho, just to name a few. And a Republican candidate can’t win the presidency without those Electoral College votes.
If Condi’s going to run, she’d better find herself a husband real soon. They are still whispering about her “friendship” with Gwen Ifill in the Capitol.
