Poor, low-skilled people consume more in social services than they pay in taxes, and the Center of Immigration Studies calculates that the average Mexican immigrant will collect $55,200 more in government services during his lifetime than he will pay in taxes.[5] The Federation for American Immigration Reform estimates that every year the net cost of illegal immigrants is $45 billion.[6]
Hispanics who are in the country legally and can get welfare and go on unemployment seem to lose their storied willingness to take any available job. Hispanics are a high-crime population second only to blacks. They are 2.3 times more likely to be in prison than whites (blacks are 6.8 times more likely), and are four times more likely than whites to commit murder, robbery or assault.[9] Given that Mexico is our largest supplier of marijuana and cocaine, and our second-largest supplier of heroin,[10] it is no surprise that Hispanics are nearly six times more likely than whites to be locked up for drug offenses. Hispanics have a reputation for “family values.” But one wonders why. Their illegitimacy rate is 45 percent—nearly double the white rate but lower than the 69 percent rate for blacks. Of all the major population groups, Hispanics are least likely to have medical insurance: 33 percent as opposed to 11 percent for whites and 20 percent for blacks.[15] The majority of immigrants from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have no insurance, which means they get treatment at public expense. Things do not look promising for the next generation. The average black or Hispanic 12th-grader reads and does math at about the level of the average white 8th-grader.[23]
Only 28 percent of Hispanics aged 18 to 24 were in college in 2003, compared to 38 percent of blacks and 52 percent of whites. From 1974 to 2003, the percentage of Hispanic men who attended college actually declined, while the percentages for every other group rose.[24]
What sort of citizens do Hispanics become? Even after they are naturalized, they remain emotionally attached to their homelands. In a poll taken by the Pew Hispanic Center, only 33 percent of Hispanic-American citizens said they considered themselves first or only American. Forty-four percent still called themselves their original, pre-immigration nationality (Mexican, Salvadoran, etc.), and another 22 percent said they were first or only “Latino or Hispanic.” When citizens and non-citizens of Mexican origin are taken together, 55 percent consider themselves Mexican, 25 percent Latino or Hispanic, and only 18 percent American.[25]
The Mexican government works hard to keep it that way. As Juan Hernández of the Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior (Institute for Mexicans Abroad) explained on ABC’s Nightline, “I want the third generation, the seventh generation, I want them all to think ‘Mexico first.’ “[26] If there were ever a sharp conflict between the United States and Mexico or any other Hispanic country, it is not hard to predict on which side of the controversy many Hispanics—citizens or non-citizens—would fall.

Immigration is yet another hot-button issue the Repubs like to bring up during the election cycle (just like abortion and gay marriage), but they WON’T do anything about it. Why? Because businesses/rich people LOVE having them here. They love having maids, hotel workers, gardeners, construction crews and nannies that they can pay little to nothing, avoid taxes on the salary and use the threat of deportation to keep them in line. Also, they use the ‘American’s won’t do these jobs’ argument to avoid what would normally happen in a FREE MARKET — they’d have to pay Americans more to do the jobs. The laws of supply and demand they are always talking about to explain why prices skyrocket should also hold true for salary demands where there is a shortage of applicants. They like the free market as long as “free market” means they are free to do anything and everything to maximize their profits but they don’t have to take a hit when things go wrong (think gov’t Airline bailouts, gov’t pension plan bailouts, etc.). But just as they don’t take any serious steps to change policy on abortion or gay marriage (the only steps taken on those issues have been at the state level and generally added as ballot measures by the people, not representatives), they aren’t about to touch this one either. So if you are anti-immigration, don’t count on the Repubs to do anything. They are just lying to you to get your vote. You might want to run your own 3rd party candidate b/c unless you are rich or a corporation, Repubs (and most Dems, too), don’t care what you think.
We need to realize that this is just part of a diversionary tactic. The elite foster hatred among the races and middle/poor social classes so that we will see each other as the problem. We’ll blame immigration, affirmative action, equal rights, gay rights, etc. for all our problems. The REAL problem is the unbridled greed of America’s elite. They send our jobs overseas while giving themselves unfathomable salaries and bonuses, regardless of their job performance. They fire older workers to hire younger ones at lower salaries. They effectively keep your pay static or decrease it by increasing the costs you have to bear for your “benefits”. Not only that, but they get huge tax breaks, offshore tax havens, tax loopholes, etc. that allow them to pay much less in taxes than you or I do. They get MUCH more $$$ in government handouts (corporate WELFARE) than all the poor/immigrants put together. They don’t take risks on the stock market b/c they get inside information and often manipulate the stock price for short selling. They are becoming the feudal lords and we their indentured servants. The only way they can do this is by getting us to focus all our anger and energy on another “enemy” — whether Mexicans, Blacks, Arabs, etc — so we won’t unite and rise up against them. They need terrorism and racism and bigotry to safeguard their fiefdoms. If we all stopped to think about who was REALLY screwing us over — there would probably be a lynch mob headed their way. They know it. That is why they work so hard to keep us at each other’s throats.
If you really want to fight the ENEMY — take back the government. Don’t allow corporations and billionaires to change/make policy that enriches them and puts us all at risk (Iraq war, energy policy, EPA regulations, etc.). Wasting your time on fighting another group who is merely a victim like you is EXACTLY what they want you to do. Don’t fall for it.
Frank, I think what most people here are trying to tell you is that if you get rid of the hand-outs, there CAN’T be any recipients of any race. If we got rid of government programs – the “social safety net”, as the Clintons liked to call it – people, legal or illegal, would have to stand on their own two feet. No one would be giving them a cent. They would not receive anything for “free”. If there were no government schools, healthcare, food stamps, school lunches, housing subsidies, ad nauseum…, we wouldn’t have any freeloaders, now would we???
It gives me good solace knowing that when our stupid f***ing human race destroys itself, that the planet can get back to doing what it does best. If the Earth actually had feelings, I think it would go to Rite-Aid and buy up all the “RID” it could find to get us “mother f***ing” parasites off of it so it didn’t have to waste its time scratching his/hers balls.
I’m not in favor of welfare for anyone. But some groups use it more than others. Mostly blacks and hispanics. Illegals are getting a pat on the back when they commit crimes, even violent crimes, and this catering to Mexico just to please the corporations looking for cheap labor is treason of the highest order. (They also cited American forced-sterilization laws as precedents for their own laws forcing sterilization of Jews, but that’s another subject.)
And what do drunk driving laws criminalize? Do they criminalize your actions? NO! They criminalize the contents of your blood. The fucking criminal government has to administer a test to you, in order to declare you a criminal. Is that the way laws are supposed to work?

So many of you talk about the desctruction of the middle class…yet no mention of the loss of manufacturing and the off-shoring of good-paying jobs to emerging economies like India and China. Off-shoring a $100k/year job to Inida does much more damamge than illigal mexicans cleaning your office building. Not to mention the melt-down of the real estate bubble that held this country’s economy together for the last several years, giving us all the illusion that everything was okay. That is what is killing the middle class. Illegal immigrant workers taking jobs that only, uneducated, unskilled Americans would take is not the cause. BTW: If you were so worried about the strain immigrants place on social services, think about this…Clinton left the Social Security overfunded when he left office…Bush completely ransacked SS and now it’s in the red…citizens in their 30s can’t hope to collect any SS when they retire. The money we spend on Iraq in one month could fund all our social services. The money we give Israel in one year could repair SS and/or the entire public school system.
If there were no illegals, companies would have to pay a decent wage to Americans to work those jobs. In addition, they would have to mechanize agriculture. Funding was provided by prestigious sources such as the Rockefeller Foundation, the Carnegie Institute of Washington, and the Harriman family. It was racism and discrimiation disguised as science. Eugenics enforced ideas such as racial hygiene, human experimentation, and the extermination of undesired population groups and it was embraced by the Nazis. I’m sure the Nazis could justify the extermination of the Jews with stats about crime and economy too. Just because you have some numbers to support your opinion, doesn’t make it right to hate.
I believe that immigration should be controlled. I believe that illegal immigrants should be deported under most circumstances (but not all). I believe that we should have a better way of allowing and regulating Mexicans to work legally in this country. I believe that everyone in this country should be subject to the laws of this country. However, many of the people posting are mixing their racist views with the politics and trying to justify their ignorance and hate. They are looking for support for their racist and hateful opinions and think they are finding common ground with people who support cracking down on immigration…and they’re wrong.
