Flunky Flying Monkeys: DOJ Has Been Katrina-ized

The incompetence that rots the Bush administration from the head down was revealed at its starkest in its abysmal response to Hurricane Katrina. It has manifested itself since then in Iraq, Walter Reed, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Pentagon, Homeland Security, the FBI and now the Dept. of Justice.

Why does Alberto Gonzales need to prep for two weeks for testimony about the policies and practices of the department he supposedly oversees?

The scenario at Justice is familiar and similar to what happened to FEMA before Katrina: At DOJ, Bush installed a trusted flying monkey, Alberto Gonzales, as the head of a huge bureaucracy. Gonzales stocked the ranks with meagerly credentialed and woefully over-matched flunkies whose only real qualification was loyalty to the Bush cabal inside the GOP.

The flunkies quickly subverted the department’s true mission, redeploying its apparatus in pursuit of Bush’s political goals. They ran roughshod over senior staffers, pushing aside anyone who was competent or non-aligned with Bush.

In this sort of system, sooner or later, corruption and chaos will ensue.

The revelation of the Katrina-ization at Justice that was exposed in the bungled firing of eight U.S. attorneys in December continued to ratchet up last week:

  • Gonzales canceled his vacation in order to crib for his congressional testimony, which is scheduled for April 16. The prompted Keith Olbermann to ask why an official would need to prep for two weeks on testimony about the inner workings of the department he supposedly runs.
  • Monica Goodling, a high ranking DOJ Bushie, resigned rather than becoming the first Justice official to plead the Fifth in the history of the republic. Her attorney says she is refusing to testify out of fear she might perjure herself. Goodling is one of 150 DOJ employees who graduated from a law school operated by the Christian nationalist TV preacher Pat Robertson.
  • In the Minneapolis U.S. Attorney’s office, four top staff members of the new federal prosecutor, Rachel Paulose, a Gonzales flunky, voluntarily demoted themselves in protest over the incompetence of their boss. Paulose, 33, was a special assistant to Gonzales, worked as a senior counsel for deputy attorney general Paul McNulty and is reportedly best friends with Monica Goodling.

A normal president would be so humiliated that he would have cleaned house long ago.

  1. We had to know this. Bush failed at everything he tried, despite his family’s money and despite all the friends of the family in the oil business who covered up for him. What’s happening today was entirely predictable. OF course the Republicans will atrribute any criticism to “Bush haters” and ignore the shambles that our country’s government has become.
I cannot understand why impeachment proceedings have not already started. There are enough reasons to vote articles of impeachment. The hearings that would follow such articles would provide enough evidence against Bush and Cheney to get rid of them and end this nightmare.

  2. Sounds like it is time for a special prosecutor to examine this entire mess, plus the entire Bush administration, concerning Iraq, Katrina, the CIA boondoggal and many other illegal acts of this resident of the White House and his friends. And while we’re at it lets really look at 9-11 as a forensic investigation instead of a political side-show and find out what really happened.
It is time to bring this house of cards down around Bush and Cheney.
    Impeachment should then follow.

  3. I CAN’T UNDER STAND WHY THEY ARE NOT BEING IMPEACHED! LOOK AT THE MESS THEY HAVE US IN! CLINTONS DICK DID NOT HURT US AND SHORE DID NOT KILL OUR YOU NG MEN LIKE BUSH HAS! WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL HIM AND CHENY ARE AS USELESS AS TITS ON A BOAR HOG! I SAY HOUSE AND CONGRESS GET OFF YOUR ASSES AND DO A CLINTON ON BUSAN AND CHENY—-IMPEACH THEM!

  5. The only thing I can come up with as to why the Bush regime hasn’t been thrown in jail, yet … is because of who will go down with them- the 109th Congress, the House of Whores, (Repugs were pimps and Dems prostitutes). When their best-paying, most-frequented customers, Americans, accept that their ho’s are infected with STD’s, maybe there’s a chance we can just spray Capitol Hill with one big can of RID and just clean the House once and for all.

  6. Look, Bush is certainly an asshole, a drunk and an idiot. However, if you think that all of this stuff is due to incompetence, that’s just what they want you to think. Another treasonous son of a bitch, FDR, said that nothing happens in politics by accident. If it happens, you can bet that it was planned that way.

Nope, all three branches of the federal government are in on the whole thing. Federal judges don’t have any job security. The federal response to Katrina was a dress rehearsal for martial law. the issues with Walter Reed, and veterans in general, has existed for decades. It’s just another venue. On and on, ad nauseam. As far as Iraq, everything is just a diversion from the fact that Bush and his oil cronies want control of the Middle East’s resources. They’re playing for time so that they can go about the business of finishing up the mammoth military bases they plan to use as jumping-off points for further invasions of Iran, Syria, etc., as well as encircling Russia. When those are done, they’ll probably come up with a reason to start drawing people out of there. THOSE SOLDIERS ARE IN IRAQ TO GUARD THE OIL! Do you think that it’s a coincidence that they called the invasion of Iraq “Operation Iraqi Liberation?” What do the first letters of those three words spell — hmm?

And just to name one more example of federal government “incompetence” that you left out, 9/11 was an inside job. The people in DC have sold this country down the river, and they’re prepared to kill anybody, including American citizens, that get in their way. Ever heard of Operation Northwoods? How about a town called Waco? Do I need to go on with this?
