Impeachment, Politics, Worst President Ever
In the new Newsweek poll, approval of Bush’s job performance has dropped to 28 percent. That’s the second time this year — the first was in a CBS Poll taken in January, during the week before his State of the Union address. Twice in a little over three months is not a good sign for him but not yet a clear signal of a major shift.
Pres. Bush lost the support of independents long ago (and what little support he had from Democrats evaporated when he invaded Iraq), so it has been support from mainstream Republicans that has buoyed his approval ratings in the mid-30s. But if he skids along in the 20s for the next few months, it is a sign that the mainstream has given up on him.
Left with only the wingnut base of Christian nationalists and whackjob extremists behind him, Pres. Bush could become, not a lame duck, but a dead one.
George W. Bush was born lucky, but throughout his life he has taken for granted the extraordinary advantages handed to him — in military service, business and government. He wasted or mismanaged nearly every cushy assignment given him, usually with impunity. In fact — and here’s the luck again — despite his lifelong incompetence, phone-it-in attitude and cronies-only hiring practices, he has been lauded with power and money at every turn. No one has failed as far upwards as he has.
But if he loses the support of his party’s rank and file now — the way he lost it from the rest of us ages ago — his luck could finally run out. To save their own skins, Republicans in Congress, especially the 21 out of 48 GOP senators who are up for reelection in 2008, might feel compelled to abandon him on the war, and perhaps even to agree to corrective action against him, such as a censure or worse.

The more things change, the more they remain the same…
“Half of all Americans doubt whether they can trust President George Bush four months after he took office, according to a nationwide poll, commissioned by Time magazine and CNN. The poll follows in the wake of Senator Jim Jeffords’ defection from the ruling Republican party last week. The crisis, which tips the balance of power in favour of the Democratic party in the Senate, has raised questions about the Bush administration’s decision to push ahead with a strongly conservative agenda in spite of its weak mandate. Mr Jeffords renounced his party membership in protest at what he saw as the government’s hardline approach on education and the environment.” -The Guardian, May 28, 2001 http://www.guardian.co.uk/bush/story/0,7369,497613,00.html

Bush at 28% Again – Is It a Sign of a Dead Duck Presidency?…
Mainstream Republicans have supported George W. Bush for much longer than makes sense. But the fact that he has dropped to 28 percent in two polls this year, including a new one from Newsweek, could signal that even they are turning on him. Left with o…
I’m just wondering how much longer it will take for the Republicans to finally wake up and face reality.
They keep crowing about how Bush still has the solid backing of rank-and-file Rpublicans. So what? Republicans comprise only one-third of the general electorate.
Neither party can win the White House without the support of independent voters — and with independents turning 2-1 against Bush and the Iraq war(Need I say that over 90 percent of Democrats oppose the war?), the GOP doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of keeping the White house in 2008, let alone recapture control of Congress.
