If Mitt Romney is elected president, the Mormon Church can expect quite a windfall.
Romney says if he wins, he will donate his presidential salary to charity. If he stays true to past form, that means most of the money will go directly to the Church of Jesus of Latter Day Saints.
Romney explains his largess with that ol’ golly-gee Republican bootstraps rags-to-riches fairy tale.
“When I got started, I went to school and I never anticipated that I’d be as financially successful as I was, and then my business went far better than I expected it would,” Romney said at a question-and-answer session…
Mitt’s business was probably really boosted by the fact that his father was the governor of Michigan and former chair of American Motors. At any rate, Romney is rich. Way rich. So rich he doesn’t need to collect the paltry salary we taxpayers are willing to pay a president.
Aides have said Romney’s net worth reaches into the hundreds of millions of dollars, but a clearer snapshot of his finances will emerge when he files financial disclosure documents with the federal government in the coming weeks. Romney, who has given millions to charity in the past, is believed to be the wealthiest candidate in the 2008 race.
Which is why he can well afford to be generous with those less skilled at picking parents. As recently as 2005, he gave to the Mormons in a big way. Like a $2.2 million way.
Governor Mitt Romney and his wife, Ann, have donated nearly $2.9 million to more than 40 healthcare groups, schools, and other charitable organizations since 1999, including $2.2 million to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a Globe review of Internal Revenue Service documents shows.
The couple’s private charitable foundation donated primarily to groups in Massachusetts and Utah, where they lived while Romney ran the 2002 Winter Olympics. The foundation stepped up giving to groups based in Massachusetts after Romney was elected governor in 2002.
His contributions to the Mormon church, where he has long been active, are by far the largest. The foundation gave $1.9 million to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2003, the first year Romney was governor, and $311,000 more in 2000 and 2001. The foundation donated $250,000 to the Mormon-affiliated Brigham Young University of Provo, Utah, including $50,000 in 2004.
Go ahead, vote for Romney. The Mormons need your money.

Oh c’mon STOP this SHIT! Stop bashing the LDS Church and Romney! The Mormon Church is perhaps the richest Church there is! Of all the churches in America, the LDS Church is the least one to want or need money. In fact they’re giving millions and millions per year in their humanitarian efforts – members and non-members alike! So shut the F@#$K UP!!
I agree with Tom – this is getting ridiculous. That $2.2 million he payed was probably tithing on his income, which all faithful Mormons pay. Were he to consider the Presidential salary as income (I would argue it wasn’t, if his goal were to donate it to charity anyway), only 10% of that money would go to the LDS church. I’m also willing to bet in such a public position that wouldn’t happen, which is why he’s donating it to charity. Donating it to the Mormon church would only make him look worse, and he knows that – it would go to something reputable, not his church. He’s already making enough income to donate to his church. He doesn’t need any more income, and the church certainly doesn’t need it either.
Trish, the LDS Church really needs Romney’s dough. Posthumous baptisms for Nazis and Jews gets expensive!
Anyone not willing to donate money to an organization, foundation, or church they wholely believe in and support is a little off the rocker if you ask me. When I graduate college and actually make some money for once, I WILL DONATE to each friend’s charity I’ve come in contact with through college and if a Presidential candidate wants to donate money to his church, let him. Who’s stopping anyone from donating THEIR money to where THEY FEEL it will be most useful. Don’t Churches like the Catholic and Mormons donate money to and organize international relief programs? Last time I checked, the Mormons don’t get paid for their service, and thus atleast more money can be expected to actually help the cause they’re helping at the time.
Look, if people object to Romney giving his money to his church, there is a simple way to deter that from happening – vote the Democratic way…..any candidate now running on the other side of the GOP is worthy so we need not fret.
How about $400,000 to help pay down the national debt?
If he gives…. we blame him
If he does not donate…. we blame him
If he drives “green” we say it is posturing
If he flies in a jet we say it uses fossil fuel
THE REASON TO NOT SUPPORT ROMNEY IS BASED UPON HIS POSITIONS ON THE WAR, THE ECONOMY, THE POOR, EDUCATION, CHURCH INFRINGING ON STATE, HIS FLIP-FLOPPING ON ISSUES TO BECOME PRESIDENT, THE FACT THAT HE WOULD LOSE IN A SHOTGUN DUEL WITH DICK CHENEY, ETC.
his donations are honorable, his platform wobbly, his stance on issues weak (tho at least he doesn’t sing Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran)
..That $2.2 million he payed was probably tithing on his income, which all faithful Mormons pay.
Exactly. Living where I live, I know many who, for whatever reason, have needed ‘help.’ I’ve known women who have undergone a divorce who have not needed to partake of public funds or were not a burden on the taxpayer because their local stake or ward supported them. Like J.Q.Public enumerates, there’s the war, the economy, et.al., as reasoning in not voting for Romney.
Wow, you sure touched a raw nerve.
Never realized there were so many members of the LSD church reading your blogs.
Maybe that money Mitty donates to the LSDers could be used to purchase the special “Rapture Underwear” required of all Mormons.
If there’s a difference between Mormons and the Branch Davidians, it’s that the Mormon church never got assaulted by Federal Shock Troops.
You say mormons never got assaulted by the Feds? You sure don’t know our history. Ever hear about Missouri killing any Mormon that didn’t get the hell out? Did you know Smith was murdered, the temple destroyed and property stolen as the mormons were run out of town. Anybody wearing weird underwear deserves your contempt and your death threats, huh. Do you make fun of all people on the planet wearing anything with religous significance. Do you howl in mockery at the sight of a yarmulke? If you see a nun do you tell her how stupid she is for dressing that way?
Mormons have killed, too. The Mountain Meadows massacre shouldn’t be forgotten.
If you are really interested in the whole story of Mormonism, check out some of the ex-mormon sites. Very informative reading.
To me, ALL RELIGION is a joke.
It’s only designed to enslave people’s minds and souls.
And has been the cause of more wars and deaths in history than anything else, including the plague.
For the record, i never mentioned any “death threats.” You did, my anonymous friend.

The con of Smith. Really. The Book of Mormon is an nineteenth century version of Dianetics. A con. A con that has made the church billions upong billions of dollars.
Truth is more important than the feelings of those who were brought up with the con imprinted on their young minds.
And calling the con a con is important if you want to stop new cons from fleecing new people.
The president’s “salary” is taxpayer money. So, if The Mittster is elected president our tax dollars will go to support religious cult.(of his choice. (Aren’t all religions cults, differing only in the degree of their irrationality?)
If it’s all the same to you Mitt, I’ll just give my money to a junkie to by drugs. At least he doesn’t make persistent visits to my home proselytizing about an angel appropriately named moroni.
Mitt’s a corporate raider who doesn’t give a crap about the people who work for him. No one gives a crap to whom he gives his money. America does not trace his pervasive electile dysfunction to the LDS affiliation. America does however care how the country is run and how our taxes are spent. Mitt should be advised we are not impressed enough with his well crafted image to guarantee that he will be given the opportunity to flaunt his wealth in a four year Oval Office photo-op, feigning his mock generosity at $200 grand a year while America is hemorrhaging jobs and continuing to suffer outrageous economic losses. We don’t mind his prosperity, so long as it’s shared Nation wide.
Romney straight out scares me . . . his donations to the Mormon Church go directly to an organization that doesn’t believe in the separation of Church and State . . . I say that as someone who was raised Mormon and left the church in my 20’s . . . their goal is the prompted initiation of Armageddon.
Do not be naive about the LDS church. Listen to ex-members who tell you like it is. Do not allow Mitt Romney to be president since it will open a door for the church to get into your private life with their DNA projects for geneology (Yeah, right…) and their baptism for the dead (no one is safe from this one) and their uber republican agenda. It’s no joke that Romney and the LDS church is a bad scenario. Knock off the ‘poor mormons’ attitude. It only shows how much you don’t know about them.
Do not be naive about the LDS church.
Not being naive and being informed is one thing. Being bigoted in expressing one’s opinion about a religion (political party, gender, etc.) as has been expressed here is just that – bigoted, and no different than the ilk who professes to be tolerant or more accepting.
LDS is ten times more of a cult than the Catholic Church which I belonged to
