Quote du Jour

Whenever I watch TV and see those poor starving kids all over the world, I can’t help but cry. I mean I’d love to be skinny like that, but not with all those flies and death and stuff.

— Mariah Carey (1970- ), American singer, songwriter, record producer, music video director and actress

Exactly the kind of empathy we so desperately don’t need. If she wants to be skinny like starving kids, but without the annoying distractions, I recommend she try “The South Bitch Diet”.

It might not be absolutely authoritative, but Snopes.com says that this is not a true quote. I’m not a fan of Mariah, but I hate to see her blamed for this if she didn’t really say it.

Is this quote for real? If it is, it’s sickening. If not, then an apology is in order.

And i’m no fan of Mariah Carey.

Ann, you are correct. Snopes does say that Mariah didn’t say that. That’s what I get for depending on Web sites (note: I usually take the Quote du Jour from one of several books I have on my desk).

So Mariah didn’t say that. But she did say this:

“A lot of people are singing about how screwed up the world is, and I don’t think that everybody wants to hear about that all the time.”

    And this:

“Butterflies are always following me, everywhere I go.”

    And this:

“It’s hard to be someone that people talk about and write about, you know? They don’t know me.”

    With apologies to Mariah Carey.
