President of the Christian Action League, 74, Is Arrested after Allegedly Paying Hooker with Checks

Privette on two occasions allegedly paid the prostitute with checks then reported the checks stolen.

Coy Privette, Tiffany Denise Summers

Rev. Coy Privette, the president of the Christian Action League, a North Carolina ultraconservative Christian political organization based in Raleigh, has been arrested for soliciting prostitution:

Privette, 74, was charged with six counts of misdemeanor aiding and abetting prostitution by renting a hotel room and paying for sexual acts, according to State Bureau of Investigation Agent Kevin Canty. Tiffany Denise Summers, 32, of Salisbury, was charged with six counts of misdemeanor prostitution, Canty said.

Police said officers were investigating a forged check case, which led them to the prostitution charges. Privette on two occasions allegedly paid the prostitute with checks then reported those checks as stolen, officials said.

According to its website, the Christian Action League is:

a Christian public policy organization that addresses public policy and legislative issues from a Christian worldview. The Christian Action League has a full-time presence in the General Assembly of North Carolina and has garnered considerable respect from both the Republican and Democratic parties. The League’s purpose is to assist the church in fulfilling Christ’s command to be the “salt” and the “light” of the earth.

The Christian Action League is funded by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, and it is affiliated with the ultra-rightwing American Family Association.

For over three decades, Privette has been one of the best known and most outrageous spokesmen for “family values” and Christian extreme right politics in North Carolina. In the 1970s, he was serving as minister at the North Kannapolis Baptist Church when he joined the tide of evangelicals entering politics that included the Moral Majority and Christian Coalition. He served in the N.C. Legislature from 1984 to 1992, and has been a member of the board of commissioners in Cabarrus County since 1998.

He and his wife, Betty, have four children.

Christianity is the REASON for the aberrant behavior. It is precisely because he is a Christian that he is also a pervert. Christianity tries to suppress the natural instincts of humans at every possible outlet and the result is (naturally) it will vent itself – and almost always in a negative, perverse way. Those feelings don’t know where to go when the owner of those thoughts has been taught that every thought and feeling is evil. The result is emotional damage for life. The REAL evil is Christianity (and religion) itself. The real demon is Jesus Christ (a fake deity) and the other imaginary friends that people worship.

Get rid of your demons folks. Get rid of Jesus and the fairy tales. Abandon these tired old myths that you only follow out of fear and then you’ll see perversion, theft, hate, bigotry, depression, suicide, and evil take a huge nosedive. Finally we will have some peace.

I’m a Christian and even attend the Southern Baptist church…I figure they need to see an enlightened spirit in the form of “me.”

Poor saps at church get duped by the rightwing Christian faction who no more reflects the words of Jesus than Osama bin Laden reflects the words of Muhammad.

What a scumbag, cheating on his wife with a hooker, THEN RIPPING The hooker off too.

The charges for false reporting those checks as stolen are far worse than the soliciting. Hopefully the prosecutor will pick up those charges as well.

No doubt he’s a Bushbot as well.

Writing a check? How stupid can you get. Maybe his defense will be that he’s senile or the check was for charity. You know, a little community service and cash for the poor, down and out. Or he was conveting her to Christianity and the checks were for buying Bibles and learning materials. He has done great service to the country so maybe Bush will pardon him anyway. Ask Bush. That way we won’t have to go to the expense of a trial.

The right wing neo-cons are quick to point the finger until its one of there “so-call” leaders, then they come up with all sorts of excuses.I’m wondering if he’ll go off to a three week rehab and come back saved. Is that to say he wasn’t saved before he went to rehab, and if so why was he preaching against prostitution? Things that make you go HUM.

Hookers, DC Madams, Paris Freed, Rosie and the View, Hillary/Barack, global warming, all distractions. While the mainstream media creates illusions, der fuhrer steps on our throats by opening our mail, arresting reporters for asking about 9/11 (Lepacek) and convicting reporters for exposing 9/11 (Chris Bollyn), suspending habeas corpus, stealing private lands, banning books like “America Deceived” from Amazon, rigging elections, conducting warrantless wiretaps and starting wars for a foriegn gov’t. Soon, the sinking of an Aircraft Carrier(by Mossad) will occur and the US will ‘retaliate’ against Iran. Which AIPAC-lobbying country benefit’s from that?

As a Christian I am dissapointed by this but not surprised. Being a Christian shuoldn’t be some act but a real living relationship with Jesus Christ. This man professed to know Jesus but never dealt with his issues and eventually God shone the light on his hypocrisy because he hates it more than anyone. Just because one man sins doesn’t discount the Creator and Saviour who is absolutely just and merciful. He hates sin. period. Read the bible and check it out. Jesus lived what he preached -believe Him!

What ever happened to “considered innocent until proven guilty?” Don’t liberals believe in that? 57 comments so far, and NOBODY here has doubted his guilt? Are you all SO sure the cops are infallible? Didn’t anyone here learn anything from the Duke Lacross case?

As for me, I doubt that the charge against Coy Privette is true. There are several reasons for that.

For one (obvious) thing, it is inconsistent with the character of the man known to his friends and associates. Of course, that is not proof, and he wouldn’t be the first person to lead a double life. But that inconsistency is what makes the charge surprising & newsworthy.

For another thing, Coy Privette is 74 years old. I saw him briefly a couple of months ago, and he did not look good. Some 74 year olds, who work hard at staying in shape, and who are blessed with good genes, are still vigorous at age 74. Not Privette. He is a very elderly man. This is not the behavior of a very elderly man.

For another thing, there’s the matter of the checks. NOBODY would buy the services of a prostitute with their own personal check. Nobody is that dumb. But people DO have checks stolen from them, and people who steal checks DO hire prostitutes. It is quite plausible that the checks in question WERE stolen from him, as he claims.

For another thing, he wasn’t “caught in the act.” He was arrested at his home, based on other evidence — presumably including the checks.

All things considered, I think it is quite likely that he was wrongly charged. In any event, it is not right to “convict him in the press” before he has had his day in court.

“Now who in their right mind would pay a hooker with a check?”

And what kind of hooker takes a check? Sounds like there might of been substances other than bodily fluids involved.

    Dave –

It’s the media’s fault? Is there anything bad that happens to conservatives that isn’t the media’s fault? Whatever happened to accepting personal responsibility? Or is that just another GOP bumper sticker slogan that only applies to Democrats?

Privette was charged by the State Bureau of Investigation, not the media. The SBI is hardly a leftist organization. And considering his position and connections, let’s assume they did an extra-thorough job. (If the SBI is wrong, Tiffany Denise Summers is much better at forging checks than she appears.)

It’s a lot more likely that Privette — the preacher and “family values” Republican politician — is really a letch and a liar who has been consorting with hookers, and ripping them off, all his life, and that he slipped up this time because he’s feeble.

“What ever happened to considered innocent until proven guilty? Don’t liberals believe in that? ”

Point well made Dave. Actually the presumption of innocence was once an “American” value that has gone out of fashion. So if this goes to court and he is found guilty, then you’ll be able to say how he was given a raw deal, just like Scooter Libby.

“Of course, that is not proof, and he wouldn’t be the first person to lead a double life. But that inconsistency is what makes the charge surprising & newsworthy.”

Wrong, we all have our faults and flaws and I’m in no position to judge him for falling short of the (giving him the benefit of the doubt) standards he set for himself but the religious right, not the left, that makes the claim, our guaranteed rights are somehow, contingent upon , moral certitude of character, reflected and set, by their own ad hoc standards and not our laws. What makes it news worthy is the sanctimony, not that people feel compelled to live double lives.

“Not Privette. He is a very elderly man. This is not the behavior of a very elderly man.”

Repressed desire over time can become compulsion. Aberrant behavior is often what people engage in when they are looking for something else. Perhaps, playing the part of a pious, faultless, father figure, to people, who would rather have some one tell them what to do, than be responsible for their own behavior, never left room for intimacy. Not saying I know this to be true, just that I don’t buy that inappropriate behavior has an age or physical limitation.
