Another Man Killed for Being Gay; Murderer Says He Was Serving God

We wish Ryan Skipper’s death were the last one we ever had to hear happened because someone was so threatened by the idea of homosexuality that they killed. But it wasn’t.

Mangum, who described himself as “definitely not a homosexual,” said God called on him to “carry out a code of retribution” by killing a gay man because “sexual perversion” is the “worst sin.”

A Texas man said he was doing God’s work when he randomly targeted and brutally murdered a 46-year-old Southwest Airlines flight attendant named Kenneth Cummings Jr. earlier this summer.

Terry Mark Mangum, 26, told [Brazoria County newspaper] The Facts in a jailhouse interview Friday that he had targeted and killed Cummings because he was homosexual and that he stabbed him in the head. He called his actions “God’s justice.”

…Mangum told The Facts he went to a known gay bar in Houston that night to specifically target a homosexual and said that Cummings, “just happened to be the one that I bumped into.”

…After 600 volunteers spent several days searching through high weeds, dense brush, dump sites and even an abandoned golf course, a bone was found in a dried-up pond. Searchers originally thought the bone belonged to a cow, but after looking at it again, searchers dug around it and found charcoal, Miller said. As they dug deeper, they found a burned body that later was confirmed to be Cummings, Miller said.

The murderer in this case was obviously not only hate-filled but deranged.

“I believe I’m Elijah, called by God to be a prophet,” said 26-year-old Terry Mark Mangum, charged with murder June 11. “…I believe with all my heart that I was doing the right thing.”

Interviewed in the Brazoria County Jail Saturday morning, Mangum said he feels no remorse for killing 46-year-old Kenneth Cummings Jr., whom relatives described as a “loving” son who never forgot a holiday and a devoted uncle who had set up college funds for his niece and nephew. He worked at Southwest for 24 years.

Mangum, who described himself as “definitely not a homosexual,” said God called on him to “carry out a code of retribution” by killing a gay man because “sexual perversion” is the “worst sin.”

Mangum believed Cummings to be gay.

“I planned on sending him to hell,” he said…

Mangum – who claimed he has studied the Bible for “thousands and thousands and thousands of hours” – said God first commanded him to kill during a “visitation,” or dream, while he was in prison in 2001. He said his victim must be a man because men “carry the harvest of the sinner.”

After six months’ planning, Mangum said, he went to E.J.’s, a Montrose-area club, where he met Cummings. After they drank a couple of beers, he said, the two went to Cummings’ home in Pearland.

Mangum said he stabbed Cummings with a “6-inch blade.”

“It’s not that I’m a bad dude,” he said, expressing concern that people might view him as “strange.” Pausing briefly, he said, “I love God.”

What makes people twist religion into their own personal code of conduct and then use it to judge, condemn, kill, and destroy?

Kenneth’s family and friends, including a fellow flight attendant, remember him as a completely different type of person from his murderer.

“He made it very hard for people not to like him,” she said. “He was very, very close with his family.”

Cummings was a good man and had an ability to put people at ease, Wells said.

“He was very giving to people,” he said. “As soon as you met him, he felt like one of those people you’ve known for a long time.”

What a senseless, stupid loss.

  1. Terry Mark Mangum was right.

The Bible is clear that homosexuals are sexual deviants and enemies of the LORD God. Your support of these sodomites is disgusting.

Whatever you think, you will not be able to change God’s Word and will one day have to pay the price for not believing what God has written.

Leviticus 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

    Romans 1:22-27

V22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, V23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

V24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

V25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, Who is blessed for ever. Amen.

V26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

V27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

  2. Well, Rev Spitz, if God hates Queers, why does He make so many?

  3. “Reverend” Spitz,
Tell me why you don’t follow all the other edicts in the Bible? There are many other things there that are referred to as “abominations”. Why do you ignore all those and concentrate on homosexuality? Did it ever occur to you that many of these edicts were a result of the culture in effect at the time that particular manuscript was written? Let’s see…what was the culture back then? Women were married off at a very young age, often against their will to men much older than themselves. Men could divorce their wifes for any reason or no reason. But the wife could not divorce much less leave her husband. If she did so she could face a death sentence. There was no “romance” as we know it today. Marriage was for making babies and providing a servant for the man the protection and food for the woman. I could go on but the question is: Do you really want to have our society go back to that type of culture of life? And if not, then you need to look at the reasons why these things were written and stop concentrating on one “abomination” while ignoring the others.

  4. In his New Covenant, Jesus gave Christians a pass on all those Old Testament abominations, including the ones mentioned above as well as working on Sunday, women wearing men’s clothing, eating pork, shellfish and leftovers, burning incense, reading horoscopes, cheating at business, improperly covering one’s poop in the desert and the rest of the edicts in Leviticus and Deuteronomy. All of these sins were given equal weight in the list of abominations: Commit any one of them and you will burn in hell forever.

Rightwing Christianist political types like Spitz insist that the edict about gay sex was excluded in the New Covenant but offer no proof whatsoever that it was — because there is none.

Spitz and other hate-mongers promote homophobia because it helps them raise money. If they really cared about a sin that breaks up families and is the real threat to marriage, they’d go after adulterers, especially since the prohibition against adultery is one of the Ten Commandments — which, and this important, being gay is not.

But attacking adulterers the way they attack gay people would upset their heterosexual male donors which would hurt fundraising. And that’s all they really care about: the bottom line.

  6. I thing the reverend should be turned over to the police so sicko’s like him are stopped before they commit the same crime brought on by their belief in a mythical person.

  7. Rev Don Spitz, more like Rev Ima Troll. m i rite?

you guys took the bait. =(

if he IS legitimate, i’d recommend looking up the Skeptic’s Annotated Bible. Plenty of the verses he talked about, plus all those other verses people of his ilk don’t like to often quote. Good times for the whole family!

  8. To Rev Spitz, and others of his ilk:
    “Lost in Translation”

“…that the Bible supposedly condemns homosexuals… it says it right there in black and white doesn’t it? Yes it does, in plain English, however does it say it in plain German? … What does this have to do with these five lines? Well let us just compare these 5 lines and how they directly translate from the German Bible written in 1545, and how they compare to the King James Version. Let us go through the passages one at a time and then you can judge. …”

  9. Thou shalt not kill ….

Brought to you by God through Moses.
Killing is wrong…Jesus spent his whole life trying to teach this.
    There are NO exceptions.

  10. These acts are sad, I seen a video last night about another guy who had been murdered then I found this video. This inspired me to write a post on my site mentioning some victims of these kind of crimes as well as my opinion on the topic.

It’s sad that people have to murder somebody just because they are different…
