So, anyway, here's the deal- the gay rights movement needs to back off the marriage issue, and focus on acceptance of the more secular issue of civil unions, or domestic partnership laws. As a whole many of the more Fundamentalist Christians object to this, than do the vast majority of middle-of-the-road christians. In states like Oregon, the constitution, by popular vote, defines marriage as a union between man and woman... however, with little protest, the legislature and Govener signed into law a civil union law, which guaruntees legal rights to gay couples. Opponents have failed to gain the necessary support and signatures to overturn the law.

The middle is ready for such legeslation. Strategically speaking, doesn't it make more sense to push the secular, legal rights side of Civil Unions, rather than pushing against a religious principle? This movement would be better served redefining the meaning of the legal social contract, rather than trying to change religion.

Had the opponents of prop 8 been smart, they would have said "fine, you can be married, but we're gonna fund Civil Union laws in 5 North Eastern States."

ok. I'm gay, or bi- to me this definition is somewhat beside the point. I am also the biological father of twin boys. Now, before the Christians gasp and shake their heads, I want to point out something: my ex-wife and i have a great relationship, our lives are going well, and we both delight in the raising of our children. Furthermore, my ex comes from a strong conservative family, and is a baptized Christian. She voted for McCain, and I for Obama. Her mother and father watch Fox Neews and 300 club regularly.

With some trepedation, they have come to accept me, even though it has not necessarily swayed their views on gay issues. But we get along. What my ex and her parents have that I don't is a movement with discipline and leadership.

The problem with the gay movement is that (in some ways) it's diversity is its own worst enemy. To win in a democracy, especially now-a-days, any movement needs discipline and leadership to succeed. You can't just rely on celebrity endorsement and throwing money into adds. The movement needs better faces than rich supporters and awekward celebrities.

If the Right has the leadership and discipline to win this thing, then perhaps they deserved to win. that's the bitch of democracy. perhaps rather than whine about it, gays could learn from it.

[...] So, I read this article and was intrigued by their use of the term homophobia. As I have understood the term phobia, it’s a fear of something. Wikipedia backs this up. But, go to the Wikipedia definition of homophobia. The first paragraph talks about fear a little, but mostly about discrimination against, hatred of and, something I find completely offensive, disapproval of.I find it chilling to contemplate a society when disapproval of another’s actions is construed as hatred or a phobia. Even worse, I shudder to think that there may be a day when it is illegal to disapprove of somebody else’s actions. It seems to me the foundation of this country was dissent.
Correct if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that another famous politician ran on a "Family Values" platform. His name was Adolph Hitler.

Regarding what the Bible says about self-righteousness, check out Ecclesiastes 7:16:

"Do not be overly righteous or overly wise...why destroy yourselves..."

Let's not forget that Jim Bakker, who had an eye (and God knows what else) for one of his male cameramen, got his TV start at CBN at the knee(s) of Pat Robertson.

A young friend of mine applied for a job at CBN years ago, and was asked by Robertson if he was saved, and told to "Kneel in front of me." (He didn't elaborate. One could assume it was for prayer.) I know another employee at CBN who worked as a male hustler (soliciting men) in New York during the 70s. So much hypocrisy, so little time...
