Iranian Pres. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s recent declaration that there are no gay people in Iran brought attention to the fact gays in Iran who are discovered are sentenced to death, and that a pair of teenaged boys
were executed for being gay in 2005.
American conservatives, many of whom advocate re-criminalizing gay behavior, may have been able to distance themselves from the story because Iran is an enemy of the United States. But now comes word that a major U.S. ally has sentenced two men to be tortured by flogging, and that part of the sentence has already been carried out in public:
Prison authorities in Saudi Arabia have begun administering 7,000 lashes to each of two men convicted of committing “homosexual acts”, a local newspaper reported yesterday.
The Okaz newspaper says that the sentence was being meted out in “phases” and was being conducted in a public square in the southwestern city of Al-Bahah.
Neither man has been named.
The floggings began on Tuesday. The men were dragged into the square, their shirts removed and they were whipped. They were then returned to prison. The process was repeated on Wednesday and will continue daily until all 7,000 lashes have been administered.
Islamic laws prohibiting gay sex are brutal:
Among the Sunni schools of Islamic jurisprudence (madhahib), the Hanafi school mandates a severe beating for the first offense, and the death penalty for a repeat offender. The Shafi’i school calls for 100 lashes for an unmarried homosexual, death by stoning for a married one. The Hanbali school requires stoning across the board. Muhammad, the prophet of Islam, directed his followers to kill the one who sodomizes and the one who lets it be done to him”(‘Umdat al-Salik, p17.3).

I understand people are angry, but where is the fear of God and presence of religious beliefs. Today, nobody believes in God and his messengers and laws. So yeah the people of today cannot see past the brutal puishment and their own ignorance is to blame. Sorry world, you won’t understand if yo tried. Read
Makes me sick to my stomach. What kind of world are we living in?
Oh, I understand perfectly. Ancient superstition is used to oppress convenient scapegoats.
Islam is not meant for this world.

“So yeah the people of today cannot see past the brutal puishment and their own ignorance is to blame.”
You clearly don’t understand.
“Islam is not meant for this world.”
Neither is Christianity because the bible it endorses just as harsh punishments for lighter offenses.
Imad — Plenty of people today believe in God. And in situations like this they (and you) find it all too easy to shut down their brains and their natural human empathy. So — looking “past the brutal punishment”, what do you see, exactly? I see only more brutality, carried out by fearful, superstitious people.
religion is becoming a plague on society
Screw you and your islamic laws Imad. there is no god that would write down such human-hating bull crap as the Qur’an (or Bible).
And the big problem with flogging gays is???? People defy religion and it seem the only country that loves the fags is the U.S. Do we want to be looked at as the country that loves gays????
Condenados a 7000 latigazos por ser gays (ingles)…
Arabia Saudita (aliado de EEUU) condenó a dos hombres a 7000 latigazos por haber cometido "Actos Homosexuales"…
This does not go far enough.
Nick: Check this map of laws regarding homosexuality: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:World_homosexuality_laws.svg
As you can see, the U.S. is squarely in the mainstream — most developed countries are actually a bit more friendly to gay people than it is.
Moderate christians and muslims wouldn’t support this beating — they view their holy books as being divinely inspired but not the literal word of god.
It’s the United States that has the highest incarceration rate in the world—mainly the poor and black. Huge numbers are imprisoned for years in brutal environments for relatively minor offenses, such as drug-related crimes. So look at your own system and stop pointing fingers at the KSA.
This is a pathetic abomination and the whole world can see it for what it is.
Backward inbred faith-based morality.
Enough.
- Mustafa, while you bring up a good point, it is utterly irrelevant.
While we are certainly not a nation of one mind on many issues, and there are certainly prejudices that prevail in our system today, at the very least we do not openly endorse these policies (or we didn’t until Bush came along).
Our system isn’t perfect, we know that. But we don’t take two people and publicly flog them for their sexual orientation based upon a perverted sense of divine will written into law. Yes there are conservatives in this country that would probably love to see this implemented in America as well. God willing they will be buried in the pits of hell with their asinine sense of righteousness.
7000 lashes could very well take years the way their doing it right now and would probably kill them at 100 if the lashes are strong enough. I could definitely see them dying if they aren’t treated properly.
Hey Nick, you’re an asshole! Just thought you should know.
I think there’s a bunch of people here who should actually get to know a gay guy before they open their mouths and prove just how ignorant they are. You make me sick. By all means keep touting your bullshit views; in case you haven’t noticed, no one gives a damn anymore.
Further I’ve got a couple of questions for you:
1. Man is made in God’s image? Then did He make a mistake when it came to gays, oh and liberals, and pro-choicers, and so on?
2. If God is omnipotent, then He knows before man sins that he is going to and still punishes him for it even though it was thereby predetermined? Sounds fair to me.
3. Can God heat up a burrito so hot that He Himself cannot eat it?
4. How can God exist if to be omnipotent He also has to be devoid of time and therefore cannot impact the world?
5. Why is your religion right? There are hundreds of others? What makes you think that you’re right just because you were born into it?
6. Why do you hate gay people? Seriously, I never quite understood that one. Is it because a 2-5 thousand year old book told you to?
7. Hitler killed gays. Was he doing the world a service too?
8. If your son or daughter was gay would you want them lashed 7000 times in a public square?
9. Would you stone your own children to death if they were gay?
10. Why do you care what a small, inconsequential sect of society is doing?
And…
11. Why are you afraid that the world is going to be turned gay by this whole gay rights issue, when you yourself believe you could never be turned?
-Intelligent responses only, if you please, I’ve got better things to do otherwise.
Nothing to fear… That was one of the most intelligent posts I have ever read.. Honestly on a internet forum.. I didn’t think it was possible.
the problem isnt the religion, fanatics are the true problem.
they should learn to respect other ideologies.

For those of you who can read spanish. Hilarious….

I’m afraid you’re right. I don’t understand or respect the ideology of people who harm others. I don’t understand what makes one person decide to take the life of another solely based on their beliefs. I just don’t understand why we can’t accept that people are different than us. I suppose this is the ultimate ego-trip. If you don’t dress like us, if you don’t pray like us, if you don’t love like us, we’re going to kill you, solely because you’re not like us.
You’re probably going to respond with something about not understanding belief again, but I’d say that there are things I believe in too. I believe in people. I believe in sports teams. I believe in myself. I don’t however believe in the opinions of political hustlers and fundamentalist demagogues and I don’t see the logic in blindly following the beliefs of bigots and mass-manipulators.
Do they burn witches at the stake in Saudi Arabia?
These beliefs are way behind - catch up!
Nick: It sickens me that reactionary bigots such as yourself can ever use the word “morality” to infer that the gay community has none. It’s the conservative zealots who get me the most, and it brings me great displeasure to inform you that you are one of them. Congratulations, arsehole.
Slightly off topic, but exporting hatred of gays by immigrant groups is growing, and it’s also Christian fundamentalists, not islamists; now it’s the Russian and Ukrainian evangelical hate groups moving to the West coast: See Alternet column:

What people do in the name of my father is discusting. Does no one remember what Jesus did when men where going to stone Mary, he asked for the one with out sin to cast the first stone. It is clear that the followers of this type of torture do not understand, hate the sin but love the sinner.
I really don’t understand why, people must be so judgemental anyway, why do some men feel that they must hurt someelse just because they are different or don’t beleive what they do. Do radical Islamics as well as christians feel so insucure that their faith can’t withstand allowing others to practice their beliefs as freely as they wish to practice theirs. I wish there was some way to save these two from this do right wrong torture.
sorry I meant down right wrong
It is done because of their insecurities towards their own selves. They hate outwardly because they need to have someone who is seen as below them on the socio-economic ladder. “Maybe I’m not so well off but at least they’re worse off.” It was one of the biggest (and most undocumented) reasons for violence against blacks post-American Civil War. The poor southern whites were angry because they lost the gorup that they and suppresed beneath themselves so as to make themselves feel better for centuries. It is the same thing when we talk about homosexuality. They see a loving relationship that may seem a little different and they take that difference coupled with their desire to not be on the bottom (perhaps they are unhappy sexually, or spiritually, or emotionally) and use anti-homosexual behavior as a cover to make them feel better.
I am surprised they weren’t renditioned to the U.S. so Bill O’Reilly could administer the punishment.
