Cheney Hunts at Club Flying Confederate Flag

The vice president of the United States of America is hunting at a private club that flies the Confederate flag, the symbol of a society built on the backs of enslaved people, the descendants of whom the vice president is supposed to represent.

But hey, Cheney’s minions are saying it doesn’t count because just like Texas lawyer Harry Whittington, who he shot in the face last year, Dick didn’t actually see the flag.

A Cheney spokesman said the vice president never saw the flag…

Deer hunter Bill Tryon, 48, who works on Clove Road, where Cheney’s motorcade sped by in the morning, said he had no problem with the veep taking aim at the local game.

“As long as he doesn’t shoot anyone in the ass,” Tryon said.

But simply showing up at a hunting club that flies the battle flag is egregious, according to usually self-aggrandizing but in this case totally correct Rev. Al Sharpton.

The flag fiasco is especially upsetting because blacks have recently been subjected to an upsurge of racial threats, including nooses left in Jena, La., and Columbia University, he said.

“This is an outrage – he ought to leave immediately,” Sharpton told The News. “He ought to apologize to the American people for being there in the first place.”

You got that right, Al. And while he’s at it, Cheney should apologize to the birds who were the victims of his male potency fantasy.

Farm-bred pheasants were released on the preserve 24 hours before Cheney arrived, making them easy targets for the hunting party.

“The way they hunt, I’m not fond of,” said Linda Smith, 52, who runs a local preschool. “It’s not what I would call a real sportsmanlike activity.”

And in case you’re wondering, the scene of this rich, whites-only activity was…Union Vale in Upstate New York.

Wait a minute. The flag wasn’t “flying.” As the photo clearly shows, it’s on a door inside a garage. There is no evidence Cheney or any of his people knew anything about a Confederate flag being on this — large — property, and why would they?

Trish, you go to a restaurant, do you know if maybe there’s a calendar or photo stuck up on a wall somewhere in back that is degrading to women? Do you inspect the premises thoroughly before sitting down to eat?

IMO, Cheney is a creep and a menace. But this non-news story should be an embarrassment for the Daily News, not Cheney. It’s a dim-witted bid to generate controversy out of nonsense and shows a complete lack of news judgment.

Also, where does it say the hunting club is for whites only or that hunting “canned” game is a whites-only activity?

Final note. It’s completely understandable if African Americans find displays of the Confederate flag offensive. That’s especially so because some jerks deliberately display it to annoy African Americans.

That said, it’s part of our country’s history and variations of it are included in several state flags. Not everyone who displays that flag does so to send a racist message or to glorify a slave-holding past. I hope we can reach a point where everyone sees and understands it for the archaic symbol and historic artifact it is. No hard feelings meant and none taken.

I’ve often felt that if someone wants to hunt “game” they should 1. Need the food. 2. Even up the game by using a bow and arrow. Shooting animals for “sport” is egregious. And what is a hunting club in New York doing flying a Confederate Flag anyway?

I agree with SW Anderson. This is a stupid trivial piece of non news. Why waste time even thinking about it. So what, they have a confederate flag hung up in the garage. Heck, I have an imperial German Battle Flag (circa WW 1 hung in my bedroom. Does that make me a Hun? Well, I am, but you get the meaning. I hate Bush/Cheney and wish they would be impeached and thrown in jail for the crimes against humanity and for treason against the US. Bust their chops for that, not for something as in-offensive as hunting at a place that has a confederateflag hung up in the garage.
