Details of Huckabee Son’s Dog Torture Episode Coming Out

David Huckabee’s mug shot after his April, 2007 weapons arrest in Little Rock

The White House has boarded its share of unsavory family members of occupants. During Pres. George H.W. Bush’s term, no doubt coke was snorted in the hallowed halls by his sons and their friends. Everyone still remembers what it was like when Billy Bob Carter came to town. And the daughters of today’s Pres. Bush could not be considered boring.

But if Mike Huckabee makes it to Pennsylvania Avenue, should we expect Michael Vick to sleep in the Lincoln bedroom?

David Huckabee “admitted to catching a stray dog during their summer session at Camp Pioneer in Hatfield, AR, and hanging the dog by his neck, slitting his throat and stoning him to death”

Huckabee’s eldest and tubbiest son, David, would have made Vick proud when he was 18 and fired from his Boy Scout counseling job for torturing and killing a stray dog. David most recently made headlines when he was arrested for forgetting about the Glock pistol in his bag at the Little Rock airport.

But a few years earlier, when his dad was still governor, Big Boy was in a different kind of trouble. Corrente has been all over this story but the site is down now, probably due to excessive hits. This is from the Crooks & Liars quote from Corrente:

Here’s the barebones story of how 18-year-old Mike Huckabee’s son, David, and 17-year-old Clayton Frady killed a dog when they were Boy Scouts, and got fired for it. From the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in 1998 (as quoted in DogBlog):

[David Huckabee,] the younger son of Gov. Mike Huckabee and another teen were fired last month from jobs at a Boy Scout camp after the killing of a stray dog.[..]

So, how and why did David Huckabee (and Clayton Frady) kill the dog?

The original story isn’t clear in the lead (the admissions and the details come as you read down). Still from the Democrat Gazette:

The dog was killed [passive voice] July 11 at Camp Pioneer near Hatfield.[..]

I believe the following is the faxed description of the “particular process.” It’s on a reputable site, Utopia Animal Rescue, which is run by, of all people, Kinky Freidman:

(Miller County, Arkansas) Two boy scout counselors, 17 year old Clayton Frady and 18 year old David litickabee [sic], the son of Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, have admitted to catching a stray dog during their summer session at Camp Pioneer in Hatfield, AR, and hanging the dog by his neck, slitting his throat and stoning him to death.

Corrente attributes the strange spelling of David’s last name to the fact that the original information was received by fax, then likely scanned into a word processing program.

The site also disputes David’s attempts to whitewash the killing by explaining that the dog had mange and was emaciated. Apparently the idea of feeding and bathing instead of torturing it were not considered. Possibly this is the reason that in his dismissal camp officials said Boy Scouts are kind, and David Huckabee wasn’t.

Newsweek also detailed how, within months, Gov. Huckabee fired the prosecutor who filed animal cruelty charges against his son.

The incident…also prompted the local prosecuting attorney — bombarded with complaints generated by a national animal-rights group — to write a letter to the Arkansas state police seeking help investigating whether David and another teenager had violated state animal-cruelty laws. The state police never granted the request, and no charges were ever filed. But John Bailey, then the director of Arkansas’s state police, tells NEWSWEEK that Governor Huckabee’s chief of staff and personal lawyer both leaned on him to write a letter officially denying the local prosecutor’s request. Bailey, a career officer who had been appointed chief by Huckabee’s Democratic predecessor, said he viewed the lawyer’s intervention as improper and terminated the conversation.

Seven months later, he was called into Huckabee’s office and fired. “I’ve lost confidence in your ability to do your job,” Bailey says Huckabee told him. One reason Huckabee cited was “I couldn’t get you to help me with my son when I had that problem,” according to Bailey. “Without question, [Huckabee] was making a conscious attempt to keep the state police from investigating his son,” says I. C. Smith, the former FBI chief in Little Rock, who worked closely with Bailey and called him a “courageous” and “very solid” professional.

Huckabee called Bailey’s account “totally untrue” and described him as a “bitter” exemployee. “I asked him to resign because he had so alienated the entire state police,” he said. “It had nothing to do with my son.”

David, who was named Arkansas State University’s 2001 Homecoming King, is now married and sometimes lists his occupation as a mortgage broker.

Sort of reminds me of the characters in Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

This man should become Michael Vick’s roommate in jail. Christians like Huckabee are making America sick and God cry.

    Typical religious upbringing.

  7. blakmira December 20, 2007 @ 7:14 pm

I was brought up “religious” and when I was 18 years old, I never once thought of hanging a dog by the throat from a railing, slitting his throat, then stoning him to death. That is REALLY out there.

Religion apparently had nothing to do with this psychopath dog-killer raised by a “minister”… Huckabee should definitely stop talking about his “Christian values” because his actions & the skeletons in his closet speak much louder than symbols of crosses!

You forgot to mention all the unsavory characters in Comrad Clintons past and the way she and her husband rented out the Lincoln bedroom like it was a rent-by-the-hour motel.

This has nothing to do with religon. To use that argument is ignorant. But this is a sick act for sure and changes my view of Huckabee. If he can’t do any better runing his owm house hold I sure don’t want him as my President. Leadership? Na, can’t control his own child, or should I say punk! That guy is scary looking!

Did you notice that when Fuckabee was on stage after winning the Iowa caucus, not one member of his family was with him? Only Chuck “My plastic surgeon really messed up my face” Norris was there. Could it be he didn’t want any reporter asking his white trash piece of shit of a son about the dog slaughter?
And leave it to Bets to bring up the Clintons. I don’t seem to recall Hillary or Bill ever harming an animal. But, but, but the Clintons…….

  17. SUSAN ZAPOLSKI January 6, 2008 @ 2:52 pm

Now i know i’am not voting for him.If he can overlook what his son did to a animal then who knows what he;ll do in office. PETS are god’s to.

A killer who also tortures the helpless humans seems mostly to start with a poor dog. I think we will be hearing about this person again, and it will not be good news1

I’m just sick and tired of all this animal abuse! They feel pain just like we do! The have emotions as well!
    Just sickning!

  20. There is no doubt that this man should undergo psychological counseling, it is not NORMAL to torture animals for fun.

Christian? I could call myself a “car” but that wouldn’t make it true. I cannot even print what I think about Huck-a-bee and his son but all you have to do is replace the “H” with an “F” and you have it.

  23. Misty January 8, 2008 @ 7:58 am

Christian? How can he call himself a Christian and condone animal cruelty?!?!? You can rest assured that he will NOT get my vote!

  24. mindy775 January 9, 2008 @ 11:40 am

    I find this disturbing…very disturbing.
I don’t like Huckabee. I don’t like his eyes. I never even once considered voting for him, even against Hilary the Marxist Dragon lady….Arkanas gave us AL-Gore, who himself posed as the “great prolife conservative” way back before he invented the internet and saved us from the evils of global warming. There is no way I believe Huckabee is a real conservative any more then I believe Rev. Phelps is a real man.

    This is just horrible.

    mindy.

  27. Madison January 9, 2008 @ 12:36 pm

Corrections: Al Gore is from Tennessee. Hillary Clinton is not a Marxist but rather a strong advocate of regulatory capitalism, which is the system the United States has operated under for more than a century.

You are correct about Huckabee’s eyes, however. They are cold and dead.

  28. Lauren Northcutt January 9, 2008 @ 4:19 pm

This is so fucked up!! Why would anyone feel the need to do something like that to an animal!?? This son of a bitch deserves the worst out of life I hope he has a misarible life! And if I ever get the chance to meet him face to face I will fuck him up and that is no threat!!!!

  29. Susan January 10, 2008 @ 12:57 pm

Well, he just lost another vote. Apparently this kid wasn’t taught to respect animals during his upbringing, something obviously not important in the Huckabee home. If you have no respect or compassion for an animal, how can you have respect and compassion for any other living creatures? Sorry, Huck. You’ve just been crossed off my list.

  30. The Voice January 11, 2008 @ 7:11 pm

Remember that Huckabee said while pointing at the bird he just shot,”This is what will happen to you if you don’t vote for me.” It says something about this chipmunk-toothed, bug-eyed, snake oil salesmen.

  31. Sara January 12, 2008 @ 3:23 pm

The apple falls, in fact, very very close to the tree.

I’ve linked to two YouTube videos showing Huck suggest

    A. his competition for president should think about “laying in a warm bathtub and slitting their wrists with razors”

and B. joking about shooting down those who don’t agree with him. Video complete with images of Huck hunting birds and brandishing a gun at them.

    Hmmm, that’s inspirational!

    Here.

  32. Sara January 12, 2008 @ 3:24 pm

The Voice — didn’t read your comment until after writing mine. See you’ve already found the gun brandishing video!

I am a Christian and a Republican. I must say I wasn’t crazy about Huckabee but now that I have heard and read about the incident with his son. I for sure am NOT voting for him. These things don’t happen in a vacuum. For the one thing we hear about, how many more have we not heard about. Sure I don’t know all the facts, but I know enough to know that I will not vote for Huckabee. Do you also notice how when we see snippets where his wife is in the picture. They don’t hold hands, or have a supportive arm around one another? Things that make you wanna go hummmmm?

I have 10 dogs, and no children. I shudder at the thought of inhumane treatment to animals, in particular domesticated animals. I in no way would ever approve of poor treatment of animals. However, to lay the blame for Mike Huckabee’s son’s actions on Mike Huckabee is no more fair than doing the same thing to any other parent. I have known countless situations where parents did a marvelous job raising several kids but for unknown reasons, one turns out bad. How does one explain this? You can’t very well lay the whole blame on the parents. In some cases, the parents may be overly strict causing a backlash. I have seen that too. I have personally met Mike and he is a respectable man. To those of you who have never met him, you can make all the accusations and inuendos you want. That does not make them hold water. I find it interesting though that with all the unusual deaths of people who had connection with the Clintons that more fuss is made about the death of a dog. I am always amazed at the finger pointing when it comes to animals but God forbid if anyone talks about the millions of deaths of unborn children. I guess that is ok, huh?

Rich, perhaps it is not fair to blame the parent for the actions of the child. BUT it is certainly fair to the parent accountable for trying to use his position of power to hide the son’s actions. That speaks directly to Mike Huckabee’s character.

  39. Thali April 1, 2011 @ 9:55 am

Rich how many cats do you have? You sound like a horder. Being mentally handicapped yourself you would think it’s okay to torture an animal to death and sweep it under the rug. The Clintons were persecuted for 8 years and nothing other than a blow job was ever found. Ken Starr spend millions in tax payer dollars and found NOTHING!

  40. Ron Burgundy December 17, 2012 @ 12:43 pm

I also work at this camp and I can say there was more to it than just killing a dog. He was a part of a secret organization know for cruelty both to animals and hazing before it was illegal and I know that he was told to do it to join the organization
