Jacksonville to Get Progressive Talk Radio

Good news for liberals in the Jacksonville-St. Augustine market:

[It] appears that Jacksonville, Fla., will be getting its very own progressive talk station.

Andy Johnson, former member of the Florida House and current host of his own afternoon talk show, has taken over WZNZ (1460AM), and will turn it into the only progressive talk station in North Florida come Monday, January 14.

So far the only schedule announcements are the addition of Ed Schultz live from noon-3P and Johnson’s own show from 3-6P. Look for a heavy emphasis on local talk programming. No word on the addition of other syndicated programming, i.e. Air America, etc.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank You! It will be a pleasure to tune in and finally hear some intelligent and truthful discourse on the state of our nation.

Andy’s a mixed bag. He’s filed a number of lawsuits that would have better suited a Republican. One was to redraw a district that had been created to ensure minority representation. Because of Andy’s challenge, the district was redrawn mostly white again, but African-American U.S. Congresswoman Corrine Brown won anyway. Another questioned the legality of an initiative by the former mayor to undertake a handful of public works projects that would help keep Jacksonville from turning into Atlanta vis-a-vis miles of pavement and sprawl. Andy settled that one and the projects were implemented as planned, with a bunch of money wasted on lawyers. Andy was invited by my Tiger Bay Club to represent Democrats after the 2002 elections, when Florida voters went for Republican candidates and Democratic ballot initiatives. I remember thinking they should have invited any number of real Democrats instead. But I wish him well, and will be interested to see what he does with the station.

In addition to Jacksonville-St. Augustine, the 1460 AM signal will reach Gainesville and also a large area of South Georgia.

WZNZ has already thrown in the towel on progressive radio. It has been sold to Queen of Peace Broadcasting and will be converted back to a religious format.
