It’s Time to Protect the Constitution

Sometimes you can’t say it better so you just have to quote the original.

[To the editor of the Florida TCPalm, the newspaper of the Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches]

The list of impeachable offenses that long ago should have summoned Congress to uphold its responsibilities and bring charges in the House continues to grow.

Some suggest the answer to the insults to the Constitution is silence — because the end is near. They may get their wish when the last nail is driven into a Bill of Rights that no longer protects any American.

Is it inconvenient that this particular hot potato would drop in their timorous laps?

Is it inconvenient that this particular hot potato would drop in their timorous laps? We must ask, when is the best time to begin to correct the course of the ship of state and bring to trial the outlaws currently hiding out in an undisclosed location in the executive office.

Again and again, they lie, obstruct, break the law (national and international), and violate the United Nations’ human rights and Geneva Conventions, as well as the bedrock principle of western civilization, habeas corpus. Refusing to answer lawful subpoenas, politicizing the Justice Department, spying on Americans and violating the limited constraints of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Then there is torture and secret prisons — no charges filed, and no attorneys for Americans or foreign nationals.

Timing and scheduling are not the issue; the Constitution is at risk. If President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have forgotten that they have sworn to protect the Constitution, then it is up to Congress and the courts — the other coequal branches of the American government — to remind them this is a nation of laws, not of men.

While some might argue the timing is not ideal, what’s the ideal time to protect the Constitution? Simply, when it needs protecting. We cannot let ourselves off the hook with arguments that this isn’t the best time to protect our civil liberties.

Was frostbitten Valley Forge an appropriate time to defend American rights? Why isn’t today the right time?

We as a nation have been, for the last 7 years at least, the victims of a classic collection of BULLIES.

Please remember that the bully is a coward. His bullying is born in insecurity. When confronted, he runs and hides, cursing you all the way, but hiding nevertheless.

The longer we wait before we stand up to the bully that is Bush and his cronies, the harder it will be to counteract their distortions. IMHO, we are probably headed for a civil war. Maybe not in the next year or two, but possibly within the next ten to twenty years.

Remember that the effects of the criminal Bush administration will not take hold immediately. But in a few years the average American will be poor and feel betrayed. Then the backlash will begin. Right now, the recession that any intelligent observer will admit was inevitable is just beginning. I think that the recession was intended to start AFTER Bush left office so his successor can be blamed for it. The greedy bastards just outdid themselves and brought it on too soon.

So, what do we do? We get off our asses and turn off our TVs, but not our computers, and hit the streets. Sooner or later, and the sooner the better. It doesn’t have to be violent if we get up and stand up right now.

Remember what happened in the French Revolution. It took a greedy aristocracy to create the conditions that led the aristocrats to the guillotine. It was a sad state of affairs, but it shows what can happen when social injustice is allowed to fester.

Nelson,
Take a pill!

Characterizing Bush as a coward makes no sense. He’s right there, out front, not hiding but saying exactly what he’s said for the past 7 years. You can watch him and I hope you will, tomorrow night. Personal responsibility is one of his greatest and most unrefutable characteristics. You have no case.

So you’re predicting a Civil War? Get a grip. I’m sure you and the Democrats will come to the rescue before that could ever happen. I reluctantly admit, it was a Republican, Lincoln, who presided over the last one.

For your information, the US economy is not in a recession! That’s just something your liberal friends have told you..not true. The most recognized world wide definition of a recession is “two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth” Our economy hasn’t had one quarter of negative growth in the past several years and the current slowdown is being addressed, unlike the slowdown at the end of Clinton’s Administration which became a recession in March of ‘01; one of the shortest lived, thanks to Bush’s policies, recessions in American economic history. Do you actually think Clinton wanted a recession in Bush’s first term. I don’t think Clinton was that evil but I will argue that Clinton’s policies were certainly partly to blame. If recession is avoided by Bush’s current push for economic stimulus, how will you characterize that? Was he just too stupid to really pull it off? You make no sense.

You also flirt with treason, old sport; “it doesn’t have to be violent”? May I infer that if it is that’s ok with you? Are you going to break with your liberal brethren and go out and get a gun? Don’t you have gun laws where you live that might restrict your and other mentally incompetents from obtaining firearms? I certainly hope so.

The French make good wine, good cheese, and really nice towers. Their revolution, unlike ours, was a bloody mess. I’m sure you and your friends can do better.

Good luck.

Monroe, you are a blast from the past. There are no other hardcore Bush cultists trolling liberal sites these day. But, come on, the cowardice of your Dear Leaders, Bush and Cheney, is on the record.

Bush rode out the Vietnam War in the champagne unit of the Texas Air National Guard, doing Jack and coke and chasing women (and maybe a few boys too). His problems started after the Air Force adopted a new regulation that pilots had to undergo drug tests when they took their medical exams. Junior blew off a series of exams, and was risking a dishonorable discharge as a result. (There is also a story that he did tens of thousands of dollars in damage to a fighter jet while parking it because he was hungover or high, or both.) His daddy had to “arrange” a quasi-honorable discharge for him.

Cheney had five (5) deferments. His stated reason for not defending his country: He had other priorities.

(The best excuse goes to your thought commander, Rush Limbaugh. He couldn’t serve because he had anal warts.)

But the real measure of their cowardice of Bush and Cheney is the fact that they sent American troops to fight and die in an unnecessary war on thoroughly false pretenses. Their invasion and occupation of Iraq for no honorable reason led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis. They are the very definition of war criminals.

And being lectured on treasonous behavior is laughable coming from a Bushite. Your Dear Leaders knowingly betrayed the secret CIA front company Brewster Jennings that tracked the WMD black market for no better reason than to spite Joe Wilson, because Wilson had had the temerity to call them on their lies about the status of Iraq’s nuclear weapons program. If there is a dirty bomb attack in the U.S. someday, chances are good that the unmasking of Brewster Jennings and its network of secret contacts around the world by Cheney and his henchmen helped pave the way.

In any case, good for you. You’re a proud Bush Republican. And why not? There can only be one Worst President Ever.

Madison,

Thanks for your response. While I don’t agree with much you have to say, you do have a nice style and I enjoyed reading your comments.

I am a blast from the present and quite likely the future.

Your comments about the drunken, snortin’ flyboy who probably enjoyed the military as much as anyone I know, have little to do with Bush’s performance or legacy as President. He did learn and had the courage to fly a jet fighter, however. Sad to say, but back then, I’d have probably been one of his best buddies. I too was young and stupid…now perhaps I’m just older and less able to withstand the rigors of my rowdy youth.

I’m not familiar with “quasi” honorable discharges but if you say so, ok. Regarding Cheney, I really couldn’t care less about his deferments. It is possible however, he was deferred for legitimate health reasons, as many others were. You wouldn’t want to send a sick boy to war, would you? Regardless, it isn’t germane to the past 7 years. I don’t intend to “snopes” Rush’s anal warts…TMI…and just to clarify, I haven’t listened to Rush in years and am not a big fan although I do prefer him to “Chappiquiddick Man” and Harry “The War is Lost!” Reid. (Aren’t you pleased, the “surge” seems to be working.)

If the unnecessary war you refer to is the one in Iraq, I think you may rely too much on selective memory. As I recall it, there were some 17 UN resolutions, a host of war supporting voices on both sides of the aisle, and overwhelming US and international support (not counting France, Germany, and Putin) for something to be done about the threat of Saddam Hussein. His overthrow, trial, and death was not a terrible loss.

Is the war dishonorable? I can’t imagine the opportunity for self rule for millions of Iraqi men, women, and children to be dishonorable. Forgive my compassion but I believe the future for those men, women, and children just might include a new form of government of, for, and by the people. Is it a slam dunk? Maybe not but neither is it a “dishonorable” pursuit. Also, in case you missed it, there were millions of innocents who died in past wars and America was responsible for many of those deaths too. I don’t agree that was our aim, now or then, but as war goes, I believe we pursue this one as honorably as we are able. America haters tend to disagree and that is certainly their right. Iraqi’s will also have that right, thanks to your country.

With regard to war crimes, it is likely history will explore and invalidate those scurrilous and unsubstantiated charges. You might have gotten an indictment in pre Sarkozy France but I don’t think you’ll get one here. That said, bring on the hard, Grand Jury hard, evidence and I’ll carry your briefcase into court for you. So far, however, “you do not pursuade”.

I have to admit, I’m not familiar with the Brewster Jennings reference. Maybe I’m just not watching enough Olbermann, though I do try. It would seem to me however if there’s anything quite so heinous as you describe, I’m sure it will come to light and the hens will come home to roost.

There are some of the opinion and with more available facts, that Amb. Wilson is the personification of an empty suit. His portfolio hardly propelled him into his fact finding mission in Niger. No, I believe that was his semi-secret wife who did that. I believe he had more than temerity in making his report. I believe he had a political agenda and little evidence to back it up. The British Parliament stands by their assertion which Bush quoted in that Saddam was pursuing nuclear (sorry, nucular) material in Niger.

Advocating or “quasi” advocating, as you might say, the violent overthrow of the American government is, I believe, treason. I don’t know that the statute makes any reference to Brewster Jennings.

Regards,
Monroe

Monroe, please! You’re embarrassing yourself. Republican talking points are widely available all over the Intertubes. Really no reason for you to waste your corpuscles and kilobytes copy-pasting them here.

If you knew what Brewster Jennings was, you would understand why it is so important to Rush that dittoheads believe Joe Wilson is an empty suit.

The United States is in deep shit if we need to have another Repugnican administration. Here’s why. If you are a Republican, you believe he following:

1. Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton

2. Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush’s Daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him, and a bad guy when Bush needed a “we can’t find Bin Laden” diversion.

3. Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is Communist, but trade with China and Viet Nam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.

4. The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.

5. A woman can’t be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multinational drug corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.

6. The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches, while slashing veterans’ benefits and combat pay.

7. If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won’t have sex.

8. A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our longtime allies, then demand their cooperation and money.

9. Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy, but providing health care to all Americans is socialism. HMO’s and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart.

10. Global warming and tobacco’s link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.

11. A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense, but a president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.

12. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.

13. The public has a right to know about Hillary’s cattle trades, but George Bush’s driving record is none of our business.

14. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you’re a conservative radio host. Then it’s an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.

15. Supporting “Executive Privilege” for every Republican ever born, who will be born or who might be born (in perpetuity.)

16. What Bill Clinton did in the 1960’s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the ’80’s is irrelevant.

17. Support for hunters who shoot their friends and blame them for wearing orange vests similar to those worn by the quail.

And finally, if George W. Bush were in an interrogation room tied to a chair he would be crying for his mommy.

Frankly, so would I, but for MY mommy, and I don’t wear fancy boots, clear brush and pretend to be a big tough cowboy.

Kindest Regards,
Nelson

Nelson,

Thanks for the list of your Repugnican virtues/beliefs. Frankly, I didn’t see much there to identify with.

1. Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton—-WRONG—I believe Jesus loves you, me, homosexuals, and Hillary
2. Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush’s Daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him, and a bad guy when Bush needed a “we can’t find Bin Laden” diversion.—WRONG—I believe Saddam was a bad guy from about the age of 12 on.
3. Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is Communist, but trade with China and Viet Nam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.—-WRONG—I believe there would be such an outcry from so many Cuban Democrats that no one wants to go there.
4. The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.—WRONG—however enforcing UN resolutions is something someone needed to do.
5. A woman can’t be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multinational drug corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.—CLOSE—I believe a woman can be trusted with decisions about her own body just not the bodies of innocent unborn babies.
6. The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches, while slashing veterans’ benefits and combat pay.—CLOSE—Praising the troops is the right thing to do; they deserve it. Slashing VA benefits began under Clinton. During the first 3 years of Bush’s Admin VA funding increased by 27%..
7. If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won’t have sex—WRONG—Adolescents will never stop having sex..
8. A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our longtime allies, then demand their cooperation and money.—WRONG—The BEST way to fight terrorism is to go where they are and shoot them regardless of what so-called “friends” think.
9. Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy, but providing health care to all Americans is socialism. HMO’s and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart.—WRONG—Providing health care for Iraqis is a necessary and likely temporary policy unless their new freely elected sovereign government wants to pay for that from their oil revenues
10. Global warming and tobacco’s link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.—WRONG—Global warming is a fact and cigarettes have been shown to cause cancer. What’s taught in schools should be up to their local communities
11. A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense, but a president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy—WRONG—However a president lying under oath about anything is a crime. However a president presenting credible evidence in support of removing a serious threat is solid defense policy..
12. Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.—WRONG—Government should limit its powers to those provided in the Constitution. There is nothing in the Constitution about gay marriage, abortion, or the internet..
13. The public has a right to know about Hillary’s cattle trades, but George Bush’s driving record is none of our business—WRONG—Both Hillary’s outstanding 48 hour success in cattle futures and Bush’s driving record from, when was that, 19 ought something, is a matter of public record. I assume you’re referencing his DUI back in the 60’s.
14. Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you’re a conservative radio host. Then it’s an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.—WRONG—Drug addiction is neither a moral failing nor should it be a crime. It is a terrible disease, drugs should be legalized, and we should stop locking people up because they believe differently along those lines.
15. Supporting “Executive Privilege” for every Republican ever born, who will be born or who might be born (in perpetuity.)—WRONG—Executive Privilege is a necessary and good thing for all presidents, Democrat and Republican. There are times when it can and should be exercised.
16. What Bill Clinton did in the 1960’s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the ’80’s is irrelevant—WRONG—Neither is relevant unless it is still within the statute of limitations, i.e. murder or rape, for instance.
17. Support for hunters who shoot their friends and blame them for wearing orange vests similar to those worn by the quail—-WRONG—but damned funny.
And finally, if George W. Bush were in an interrogation room tied to a chair he would be crying for his mommy—-RIGHT—and his Mommy would kick some butt so don’t try it, she looks too much like George Washington and he was tough too.

Frankly, so would I, but for MY mommy, and I don’t wear fancy boots, clear brush and pretend to be a big tough cowboy.—RIGHT—Let’s impeach him for is lack of fashion sense and the environmentally friendly ranch he likes to take care of.

Highest regards,
Monroe
