Supposedly, Helm was very nice to his family and friends. In the larger picture, he was a bigot, plain and simple. Helms brought us into the Republican Era of the two Bush presidents and the likes of Karl Rove. Helms could make a good speech to people of his kind. I am sorry all of his vicious rhetoric has been ignored and he has been placed on a pedestal. He was an embarrassment to North Carolina and the concept that “all people are created equal.”
