ABC’s Jake Tapper points out that John McCain is 72, while Alaska is only 49.
Both McCain and Alaska were admitted to the United States after having been around awhile. McCain was born in Panama where his father, the admiral, was serving. Alaska was part of the Russian empire until becoming a territory in 1912.
Congress bought Alaska for the mineral rights. Lobbyists have bought McCain for pretty much the same purpose.

Actually, the U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867. It was known as “Seward’s Folly,” after Lincoln’s and Johnson’s Secretary of State William Seward.
Thanks jwb. Purchasing Alaska and making it a territory were two different events. It was purchased in 1867 but didn’t become a territory, a step on the way to statehood, until 1912.
