Crowd at Palin Rally Hurled Racial Epithets at African-American on News Crew

Rolling Stone reporter Matt Taibbi’s depiction of Sarah Palin at the GOP Convention as “Gidget addressing the Reichstag” is becoming more apt by the minute. Earlier, Trish wrote about Palin’s incitement of verbal violence at a rally in Clearwater, Fla., when a Republican voter in the crowd shouted, “Kill him,” apparently in reference to Barack Obama.

Now the Washington Post’s Dana Milbank says the anger among the GOP rank and file in Clearwater was also directed toward reporters covering the event generally, and an African American sound man in particular:

Palin’s routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric’s questions for her “less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media.” At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, “Sit down, boy.”

Given the racist bent of their base, and leaving aside their constant lying about Barack Obama, his associations and his record, John McCain and Sarah Palin are playing with rhetorical fire.

So much for Country First. It is clear McCain doesn’t care what he does to the people by inciting this kind of violence and racism if it means he might win. Disgusting.

The sad, simple fact is that McCain will win.

Americans will go into the voting booth in November and not be able to cast a vote for a black man.

What a sad, sad country we are whilst pretending we’re a shining city on a hill.

If this happens again, I say, news media LEAVE!!!

Do not give them any coverage!

We’ll see how long they put up with not having their campaign covered.

Or, focus only on the nastiness coming out of the crowd and Palin. Don’t report anything else.

The more “the bint” babbles, the less John McCain says. If I were Mc Cain I’d watch my back because Sarah’s “gonna” step on it.

The only 2 qualities McCain & Palin have to offer America is their White skin & empty heads! The person I feel most sorry in the presidential campaign is McCain’s wife. HE’S SUCH A PROFOUND LOSER and she thinks SHE did something to deserve his evilness. Maybe SHE’LL end his run for the Whitehouse…with a castiron frying pan!

Barack Obama the Winner will be President. You nervous nellies, STFU, why dont you keep your pessimism to yourself. What is the point of expressing your pessimism. Let the red scum states vote for Loser McCain, there are plenty of states in the union, there are I assure you plenty, plenty of non-racist Americans.

Come on guys, act like journalists and not like contributors to the society page. Where’s the audio? video? eyewitnesses? Other than Dana Milbank (find out about him on Wikipedia), no one recorded or witnesses this event. Not the Secret Service agents who were there, not the press. No one.

Please…. Do a little homework next time before you print something as fact, or read about it and cite it as “proof” to support your beliefs (whatever those may be).

Thanks for the input, Karl, but Milbank is credible and the idea that a Republican in Clearwater shouted the n-word at a guy on a news crew is entirely too plausible.

I am a 55 year old,”white” woman from the Florida. I have NO problem supporting Barack Obama, even though I didn’t vote for him in the primaries (I didn’t vote for Hillary either). Not ALL southern whites are products of generations of inbreeding. The person that yelled out “Kill him” in Clearwater, probably was. They are incapable of sane, rational thought. It’s not their fault, it’s genetic. It’s the reason they continually vote against their own best interest.
To KDT: There is plenty of video and audio evidence of the incident in Clearwater. I heard it myself.

KDT – You are right – not of that particular obscenity. However, there are videos of the “terrorist,” “treason,” and “kill him!” remarks. I’m sorry to have to tell you this, because surely it will be a shock to you.

And wasn’t there some sheriff or some such there riffing on the same theme?

    Hmmm ….

I can’t recall as ugly a presidential campaign as this. Even Nixon 1972 didn’t get to this. We are in uncharted waters.

Those words of Marc Antony over Julius Caesar come to mind when I think of McCain and Palin.

Good friends, sweet friends, let me not stir you up
To such a sudden flood of mutiny:

I come not, friends to steal away your hearts,
I am no orator, as Brutus is:
But, as you know me all, a plain blunt man
That love my friend, and that they know full well,
That gave me public leave to speak of him:
For I have neither writ nor words, nor worth,
Action, nor utterance, nor the power of speech,
To stir mens blood. I only speak right on:
I tell you that, which you yourselves do know,
Show you sweet Caesar’s wounds, poor poor dumb mouths
And bid them speak for me:
    But were I Brutus,
And Brutus Antony, there were an Antony
Would ruffle up your Spirits, and put a Tongue
In every wound of Caesar, that should move
The stones of Rome, to rise and mutiny

All: We’ll mutiny. We’ll burn the house of Brutus …
