Joe says he doesn’t like Social Security. What Joe isn’t recognizing is that the SS money he is paying is not for himself but to support his parents (if they’re now eligible) whom he mentions. SS is not an insurance program. Each paying generation supports the present SS recipients. If Joe stopped paying into SS, he would then have to explain to his parents when their payments stopped that they would have to cut back – or he may be left contributing to their subsistence himself.
