* As anyone not living under a rock knows, Barack Obama is as white as he is black. In some parts of the world, having one drop of black blood — as our antebellum miscegenation laws defined it — does not make you black. We of course live in a country where all that people see is ethnicity and race.

It’s funny that those talk radio and FOX News folks leave out the fact that Obama failed to check a box next to which ethnicity he was when he applied to Harvard. Had they been screening the applications, they might have required a photo be attached so they could make their decision accordingly.

Whoa! Actually, in Mississippi, and most other states back then, 1 drop of ‘negro’ blood made you 100% black. There’s an old famous saying in MS, “If you have 1% Negro Blood, Mississippi will gladly throw in the other 99% for you.” Love your blog, but check the facts on this one.

That’s exactly what I said Slim Charles. During antebellum times here, having one drop of black blood made you black, but in some parts of the world (obviously not our own country, judging by the way everyone regards Obama) today this is not the case. Some people seem able to entertain notions of true diversity. As to our country’s past I was thinking more of Louisiana, with its intricate and detailed “color” laws, than of Mississippi.

Asthetically, Obama appears to be African American and therefore his life experience would be impacted thusly.

Comparing what other cultures do or how they view race is like comparing apples to oranges and inconsequential domestically. But also while there are cultures who have more diverse views around the 1 drop of blood concept, there are still nations with deep seeded perceptions around race that are detrimental.
