I’m crying foul, whether Obama’s team is or not, over Saturday Night Live’s just announced guest this week which, if anyone’s counting, happens to be the Saturday before Election Day. Yes, the winner for the spot is…John McCain.
It’s long been known that SNL producer Lorne Michaels is a fan of McCain’s, having maxed out campaign donations limits to him in both the primary and general cycles, not to mention contributions to his various PACs, like Straight Talk America, since 2000. And yes, Michaels has played both sides of the fence with recent donations to Obama as well.
But after last week’s dismal portrayals of Barack and Michelle Obama by Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph, one has to wonder where Michaels’ true loyalties lie. SNL provides the Monday morning water cooler conversation for millions, whether they watch the show or not. And the day after Monday is…oh yeah, Election Day!
I have no objection to SNL’s cast lampooning the candidates, or using the campaigns for fodder during Weekend Update. I thought the earlier appearances by McCain and Palin were funny, as was Hillary Clinton. But to turn the show over to McCain on the Saturday before the election strikes me as unsportsmanlike. I doubt it would do any good, but if you’d like to register a protest, here’s the place to post a message.

The relationship of Alex Baldwin and Tina Fey on “30 Rock” appears to be a satire on the relationship between Michaels and Fey when she was on SNL: the hip, rich conservative producer trys to mentor the poor liberal-socialist writer.
Fey’s brilliant portrayal of Palin has certainly hurt her well-crafted hockey-mom image, so Michaels is having Palin and McCain on the show to undo and reverse the damage. He is trying to say, “Look, the satires are only satires, the real people are cool, vote for them.”
We may consider these appearances as each worth about two million dollars in free publicity that Lorne Michaels is donating to McCain and the Republican Party.
No doubt of Guilliani had won the nomination, Michaels would have had him as permanent host every week before the season.
I will not watch this week. When SNL becomes a political forum…it is time to give up the show. How can you combine fart jokes with a Presidential campaign? It is time for a change.
add to that the free commercial that cnn gave mccain during obamas paid spot, and it shows who supports whom. thank you, jon stewart, and move on larry king and michaels.
It’s just another stunt. That’s all McCain has, just one stunt after another. It only impresses people who are already his fans.
It can’t be about ratings since McCain can’t draw a crowd — had to bus in 2,000 school children to fill a venue in Ohio yesterday.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that NBC is owned, ultimately, by GE, which is a major defense contractor.
And did Lorne Michaels ever become a U.S. citizen?
SNL hasn’t been funny for years. Other than the sketches making fun of the debates and Palin, the rest of the shows were like watching paint dry. I doubt this will help McCain much.
i will not watch snl for sure….
I didn’t watch!
