GOP party boss Rush Limbaugh is no longer content merely to wish that Pres. Obama, and thus the U.S. government, will fail. Now he’s also expressing sympathy for enemies of the country — specifically the hijackers who threatened the lives of American merchant marines on the Maersk Alabama last week:
They were kids. The story is out, I don’t know if it’s true or not, but apparently the hijackers, these kids, the merchant marine organizers, Muslim kids, were upset, they wanted to just give the captain back and head home because they were running out of food, they were running out of fuel, they were surrounded by all these U.S. Navy ships, big ships, and they just wanted out of there. That’s the story, but then when one of them put a gun to the back of the captain, Mr. Phillips, then bam, bam, bam. There you have it, and three teenagers shot on the high seas at the order of President Obama.
And then Limbaugh made this (typically) factually challenged assertion:
If only President Obama had known that the three Somali community organizers were actually young black Muslim teenagers, I’m sure he wouldn’t have given the order to shoot. That’s the correct way to look at it. If only Obama had known.
It is well known — and there is no doubt Pres. Obama’s security advisers knew it — that Somalia is, by law, nearly 100 percent Muslim. In fact, the Somali constitution specifically discourages the influence of any other religion.
So Rush is wrong as usual — the president and his team had to know the pirates were Muslim. The main point, of course, is that their religious faith was irrelevant to the fact that they were hijackers who were holding an American citizen captive.
Update: Some have claimed that the quote is taken out of context. The above is from the second paragraph of the transcript of Rush’s remarks from his site. In the spirit of fair play — which we should never expect from Rush or his ilk, for what it’s worth — here is the first paragraph:
RUSH: You know what we have learned about the Somali pirates, the merchant marine organizers that were wiped out at the order of Barack Obama, you know what we learned about them? They were teenagers. The Somali pirates, the merchant marine organizers who took a US merchant captain hostage for five days were inexperienced youths, the defense secretary, Roberts Gates, said yesterday, adding that the hijackers were between 17 and 19 years old. Now, just imagine the hue and cry had a Republican president ordered the shooting of black teenagers on the high seas. Greetings and welcome back, Rush Limbaugh, the Excellence in Broadcasting Network and the Limbaugh Institute for Advanced Conservative Studies.
Of course, there would have been no hue and cry from the left if Bush or any other Republican had ordered the action to rescue a kidnapped American. That is a typical vile smear.
But was Rush, the hate radio ideologue who has repeatedly said he hopes the president will fail, being sincere in expressing sympathy for the pirates, whom he described as “teenagers” who were “wiped out at the order of Barack Obama” — or was this treasonous-sounding tripe just an attempt at satire that misfired?

Crockett – I’m familiar with humor and satire, and this ain’t either.
Poor Rush. His dots are just not connecting under Obama. Can you imagine him describing American black guys holding a gun to a captain’s head on American seas as “teenagers who were upset, who just wanted out of there?” And Obama, being back in Washington and all, didn’t give the order to shoot. What would Rush have you think, that he was standing on the ship’s deck with binoculars? Rush is having to go to farcical lengths to be on the opposing team.
Save some typing and put Rush’s picture in lieu of the definition of “douchebag”. The man certainly fits the bill!
Good job rush! Even your most rabid followers know this is BS, and that if Obama HADN’T given the green light to shooting the pirates, you would have been all over it like a cheap suit. This is just the weaker, actually MUCH weaker, “plan B” of your never-ending screed. rush, you are outdated, outclassed, and outmanuevered. You are talking yourself right into obscurity, as are most of the far-right media propagandists. The shoe is one the other foot now, how’s it feel? Taken out of context, yes, it does sound like he has sympathy for the pirates. However, he was riffing on an AP wire story that seemed sympathetic. I happened to hear him do this on the radio on my drive to lunch.
It’s too bad you chose only a couple of sentences to post instead of the several minutes of material both before and after your chosen blurb.

It seems to me a fair number of the draftees that went to Vietnam may have been teenagers too. What does being a teenager have to do with being a potential killer / hijacker / kidnapper / xyzer?
Poor Rush, The failure of Operation Chaos, Obama being elected, Al Franken being elected, the hostage situation being a success….he just can’t win. Let him spin it anyway he wants. He continues to suffer the indignity of coming up on the losing end of things and having to twist it so that it doesn’t bother him. He is now the head cheerleader for a losing team. Meanwhile his opposition continues to move forward with victory and success over and over.
Satire? Of What? I didnt hear ANY Liberal other than Rush Limbaugh referring to the kidnappers as organizers. I didnt hear any Liberal saying that the kidnapper should have his way with the American pilot. Where is the Liberal you are satirizing – if you were as you claim. Conservatives make these seditious anti-American rebellious remarks, then they hide behind legalistic re-defitions about how they didnt mean what they said. Name the Liberal you are supposedly satirizing – I thought so – so it was seditious.

Limbaugh…I’ve said since the late 90s that this guy is nothing more than the current version of the old Nazi propagandists preying on the lesser-informed and bigoted populace out there that isn’t smart enough to do anything than follow him over the cliff. Like Boss Hog, he, too, shall pass by self-destruction…and this episode just sealed the deal.
Calling limbaugh a douchbag is much to kind … furthermore douchebags serve a useful purpose … limbaugh is a “Piece Of Shit” that serves NO useful purpose . . .
