A study by UCLA found that about a quarter of Californians under the age of 65 are uninsured. That’s 8.2 million people. By comparison, that’s more people than who live in 39 U.S. states and more than the total population of Virginia (7.8 million), Washington state (6.6 million), Arizona (6.5 million) or Massachusetts (6.5 million).
Nearly 1 in 4 Californians under age 65 had no health insurance last year, according to a new report, as soaring unemployment propelled vast numbers of once-covered workers into the ranks of the uninsured.
The state’s uninsured population jumped to 8.2 million in 2009, up from 6.4 million in 2007, marking the highest number over the last decade, investigators from UCLA’s Center for Health Policy Research said.
People who were uninsured for part or all of 2009 accounted for 24.3 percent of California’s population under age 65 — a dramatic increase from 2007 driven largely by Californians who lost employer-sponsored health insurance, particularly over the last year.

The republicans view is that this is ok, because most of these uninsured are less than human, minorities and or illegals. Their attitude is that if these folks don’t have health care maybe they will get sick and die, and that’s a good thing.
Sound callous? Look at how casually they destroyed a million people during the Iraq war. They have no regard for human life, unless it’s in the form of an embryo.
Dont blame the republicans on this, stop spreading your liberal koolaid. It has to do with personal responsibility. All of them smoke weed and have big screen TV’s. I live in california and pay 50bux a month for health insurance. Access is here, just the insurance companies need to be more regulated.
If you’re only paying $50 per month, you might as well spend that money on pot. If you get seriously ill or have a debilitating accident, you’ll be in bankruptcy within a year because a policy that cheap won’t cover anything. And if you have an individual policy in California, not part of a group, your premiums will be going up by at least 40 percent this year — not your coverage, just the money you send to insurance companies to line the pockets of their billionaire CEOs and to pay the company’s death panel bureaucrats whose job it is to deny coverage for your Aunt Fanny’s chemo.
But you certainly do represent the sort of people we’ve become: Hey, I got my insurance covered, and sure the premiums are going up 40% next year, but fuck all yall who don’t have it. Die in the streets.
The hell with all these off the wall republiNUTS. We can do without them, actually the country would be better off. I have NEVER heard so many republiNUTS cry and bitch as I have this year. Guess they are not use to a President ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING!!!! All the republiNUTS did for 8 years was sit with their hands up their ass, and pray for the problems to go away. They are a DO NOTHING party, that is why the country is in the shape it is in today. Not only did the morons vote for the Idiot from Texs once, they DID IT TWICE!!! Thanks for helping to bring down the country assholes, we don’t need you. For all those who want to succeed from the U.S., GO RIGHT AHEAD, we will be better off without you, but you think your taxes are high now (which they are not) they will be if you succeed. Where are you going to get money for road and infrastructure construction, I don’t know of ANY fairy that will do it, bunch of IDIOTS!!!
Will, I stand by what I said; what have the republicans contributed to the healthcare legislation? NOTHING. All they do is OBSTRUCT. They couldn’t care less if you get sick and die, as they only take care of their own and sometimes not even that. Oh wait(!) they did contribute one thing to the healthcare debate; they said to “Wipe the slate clean and start all over again.” Yeah, that would push heath care legislation back far enough to make it past the coming recess, then when it came up again, they could push it back, yet AGAIN.
Koolaid? How about TRUTH!!
1 in 4 in California without insurance. Solution – send them back to Mexico.
All:
Regarding Matt: Don’t feed the trolls. You’ll never argue him into sanity. Ignore him and he’ll go away.
If we fail to get some sort of decent healthcare reform Will will eventually learn just how screwed he is with his $50/month insurance policy. I certainly hope not (I don’t know him, and don’t wish him bad luck), but it seems likely.
Matt – the numbers include only those who formerly had insurance through their employers and lost it. Illegals can’t be employed legally in California, and so aren’t eligible for employer-based insurance. Those 8.2 million are all American citizens just like you.
When Americans go to countries where there is “socialized” health care — England, France, Germany, etc. — they get free care there if they get sick or injured. But in America, foreigners are SOL. Too bad for them, right? Go back to Europe, tourists!
In fact, this is a great example of how the rise in stupidity that has occurred in this country as a result of the ascendancy of the right wing has left us vulnerable.
There are about 3 million undocumented folks living in California — mostly Mexicans and Asians but there are Europeans as well. Because they can’t get health care, these workers constitute an epidemic waiting to happen. Imagine having a couple million people who’ve been exposed to highly contagious viruses like Ebola — the one that literally rots your skin off — working as nannies, parking your cars etc.
But that’s the way the right wing wants: Everything for corporations, let the people die in the streets.
Hey Will – Bragging about being under-insured is like being proud that you are ignorant.
As far as the illegals going back to Mexico; that’s the LAST thing the wealthy white elites want! Who else would enable their restaurants, hotels, construction and landscaping businesses to be SO profitable? When I see republicans feining outrage at the illegal aliens in this country it makes me want to hurl!
[...] 24% of Californians – 8.2 Million People – Have No Health Insurance (tags: healthcare statistics) [...]
Will you are not part of the problem you are the problem. It is your type of idiocy which seems destined to destroy this country.
My guess is that you contribute 50 bucks a month for health insurance but your employer pays the rest and beleive me it is a lot. A self employed person, – whether they smoke pot or not – can face 800 dollars per month for coverage pretty easily. Your emplyer likley pays several hundred dollars a month on your behalf. Which unless i miss my guess means that if those 1 in 4 californians sold those big screens they might get one half months premiums.
And what is it with the Cons and big screens. Every time i see one of theses idiots like Will write something they mention big screens. I wonder if they just have an aversion of some sort, i know lots of cons with pretty large tvs, but I guess I don’t know just what makes a big screen. Mine is 26 inch, which is bigger than my folks ever had so is that a bg screen? Perhaps will could enlighten us since he seems so hung up on them, how many inch tv does it take to be a big screen?
