Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence: ‘Trayvon is Dead Because a Man with a Violent History Was Allowed to Carry a Gun’

The Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence issued a statement following the verdict which exonerated George Zimmerman for killing Trayvon Martin. The statement reminds us that Trayvon would be alive today if people like George Zimmerman, who has never even had the decency to say he’s sorry for the mistakes he made the night he harassed and then shot an unarmed 17-year-old, were not trusted to carry a concealed handgun.

Even Rick Perry once said, “Oops.”

Dan Gross, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence today called the verdict, “part of a tragic event that could have easily been prevented.”

Gross said, “There is sharp disagreement over the verdict, but there can be no disagreement over the reason why Trayvon Martin is dead. George Zimmerman had a gun that night, and the state of Florida allowed him to carry it virtually anywhere despite a violent history.
Virtually anybody roaming our neighborhoods with hidden handguns is the gun lobby’s vision, but it is not the vision of the rest of the American public truly committed to safer communities…

What is not debatable, though, is the fact that Trayvon Martin is dead because Zimmerman had a gun. Zimmerman was given a concealed carry permit by the state of Florida despite an arrest record and a history of violence, as a direct result of the influence of the gun lobby, and if it weren’t for that, this tragedy never would have happened…

“Allowing deadly semi-automatic weapons on the streets does not make a community safer. By arguing for a broad constitutional right to carry hidden handguns, the gun lobby wants to deprive law enforcement of the tools it needs to keep guns off the streets. The American people should be allowed to decide whether they want people like George Zimmerman carrying loaded guns in public places where their children walk home,” said Brady Center Legal Action Project Director Jonathan Lowy. “Most courts have properly recognized that reasonable public safety laws do not infringe on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens…”

You quote that the majority of people do not want anyone to carry loaded guns except for police officers. I submit that you are incorrect and assume that because you feel that way that make it true. You could not be further from the truth. If indeed that is how the majority felt, there wouldn’t be anything the pro gun lobby could do to stop the laws from being changed. Our forfathers made it abundantly clear that all people should have the right to keep and bear arms, and that right shall not be infringed. No amount of rhetoric from the left wing anti gun lobby can overcome the intent of that right. The problem is not the guns themselves, but improper use of the guns. Most crimes committed with guns are by criminals that did not obtain them legally. Stopping law abiding citizens from owning guns will only make the criminals bolder, because they know they face almost no opposition. Gun free zones are frequently the chosen target for this very reason.

    The Title should read
“Trayvon is dead because he was about to kill Zimmerman and fortunately Zimmerman legally carrying a handgun was able to defend his life”

That is the way the jury saw it also and that is the way I saw it via the trial. Zimmerman should never have been arrested for defending his life. Obama should have minded his own business but it was typical of his racial divisiveness. (He’s just hoping for a riot so he can send in his brown shirts after Martial Law) There has to be some kind of practice with the equipment the DHS has at their disposal. Just saying!!! :)

Screw u and trying to look at one event and the right to carry a fire arm is within the rights of all american citizens. Its asshole like the people who are reporting this crap in which the goverment is trying to fool the people with using propaganda and saying what ever the goverment wants them to say. The fact remains that Zimerman was found inocent and now all the black people are pissed because a stupid black kid fucked with the wrong person and paid with his life and I aplaude Zimerman and our courts for giving the right decision in the matter

    The article should read:

Travon is dead because, during the commission of an assault on George Zimmerman, he was so violent that Zimmerman feared for his life, and was forced to use deadly force in order to protect it. Had Travon Martin not assaulted George Zimmerman, but complied with him, as Zimmerman was the Captain of a Neighborhood Watch, this tragedy would have been prevented.

Originally, Sanford County Florida police did not issue any charges against Zimmerman, due to the fact that the account he had told was consistent with his injuries, including a broken nose and deep abrasions on the back of his head consistent with it repeatedly striking the concrete.

Only after Eric Holder used tax-payer’s money to pay for travel expenses for DOJ personnel to travel to Sanford County, FL, and to pay for, and instigate, protests, were charges filed against Zimmerman. In this same encounter, the police chief of Sanford County was relieved due to his refusal to arrest Zimmerman.

After a relatively short trial, the 6-woman jury returned a unanimous verdict of non-guilty on all counts, which included murder II and manslaughter. This process, in which Zimmerman was tried by a jury of his peers, and consistent with the American judicial system, ended with Zimmerman receiving back his firearm and was free to go.

Immediately following the trial, the Obama administration attempted to press additional charges against Zimmerman for civil rights violations. In addition, president obama attempted to use the death of a 17 year old to push for gun-control legislation that he had failed miserably to pass within the legal channels of congress. Both Eric Holder and president obama, were laughed at and told to go home to await the results of the 2014 mid-term elections; the result of which was a full restoration of the senate to the republicans in an even greater victory than they had achieved after the mid-term elections of 2010.

It is a shame that you take advantage of this case to press your baseless point of view. Every day people carrying a gun stop criminals from committing crimes, some of which are intended to be quite violent. If you speak for the majority, which you don’t, then why have the laws which allow concealed carry been passed?

You guys are all so invested in your gun fetish and racism that you are deliberately overlooking one fact: Zimmerman could have stayed in his car as he was instructed to do by the police dispatcher. He did not have to stalk this 17 year old kid in the dark with a loaded gun. Zimmerman left his car ready to kill someone, and ended up taking the life of a kid armed with an iced tea and Skittles. The fact is, if the kid had been white, Zimmerman would not have stalked him with that loaded gun. If Trayvon had been a white kid, he would not be dead.

And if he hadn’t had a gun he would be dead. I’d rather Zimmerman be alive than a pot smoking gang member.

I am shocked by these comments. GZ has a criminal record, mixed martial arts training, a loaded gun, training in stand your ground law, and was a neighborhood WATCH guy…. Get that: neighborhood WATCH, not stalk and kill.
Trayvon Martin was NOT a gang member…that’s what the radical right wing media (FOX, Limbaugh, etc.) what you to believe.

I know logic does not matter to Fox News watchers, by which I mean Republicans, but if Zimmerman had stayed in his car as the police instructed him to do, neither he nor Trayvon would be dead. Zimmerman went looking for trouble with a loaded gun. He stalked and killed in cold blood an unarmed teenager and then went on Fox and bragged about having no regrets about killing this innocent kid. It is sadly not surprising that a cold-blooded racist killer like George Zimmerman is the latest hero of the new Jim Crow neo-Confederate crowd.

“Trayvon is dead because Zimmerman had a gun.” What an interesting (and stupid) remark.

Zimmerman is not dead because he had a gun. It could very well have gone the other way but then there wouldn’t have been any media coverage… a black guy killing a white guy?

Are you telling me everything is race related? As I recall, Trayvon was wearing a ‘hoodie’ so Zimmerman likely didn’t even know if he was black or not until he approached him.

Your statement made me outright laugh at the ignorance and failure to follow facts! Trayon is dead because he presented a threat to the life of GZ in a physical confrontation. The only thing under trial is the fact that GZ was involved in a physical confrontation that led him to fear for his life and he has the right to protect his life. The stats are factual (See DOJ briefs & FBI open source crime stats) that ARMED citizens PREVENT crime. I predict Chicago crime will drop more than 10% the first year CCW takes affect in IL. AND thats 91% Black on Black violent crime so where is the race card and call for attention there – not as sexy is it. Violent offenders WILL target the weak and unarmed and it would be a free for all if our nation ever allowed them to plunder without the risk of meeting a armed citizen. The verdict was no surprise and what it should have been. GZ didn’t do everything right (he will have to live with that) but he DID articulate that he was physically threatened and being attacked, he feared for his life under the proper circumstances that allowed him to deploy a firearm and end the threat to his life. Those in Oakland protesting the verdict – go home and teach your kids some manners – its about parenting. The only ones with a ligit right to protest are TM family and a jury of peers didn’t see it their way either.

So it seems the answer to this is for people to threaten the lives of the jury members, their families, and the defense team. It seems to me the Prosecution team are the ones who lost the case, why is no one threatening to “hunt them down and kill their kids” like others have said they want done to the jury members?

    You said:

    ARMED citizens PREVENT crime.

This is ridiculous. Zimmerman was ARMED and he did not PREVENT a crime — he COMMITTED the crime of murder. If Zimmerman had not had a gun with him, there would have been no crime.

George Zimmerman could have avoided feeling threatened by this teenager if he had simply done as the police instructed and stayed in his car until a squad car arrived on the scene.
