Flashback: Rove Erases 22 Million White House Emails on Private Server at Height of U.S. Attorney Scandal – Media Yawns

Now that they’ve taken control of Congress, Republicans are wielding power much the same way they did in the Clinton era and for the six years afterward when they controlled the White House and Congress under George W. Bush: ineptly — examples: 1, 2 etc.

Then as now, it’s clear that the only thing Republicans do very well is inflame the media with bogus scandals — which is a handy way to distract attention from their ineptitude. They are doing this with their usual aplomb, and considerable success, in the matter of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server to send emails.

Clinton has said she deleted about 50,000 emails that dealt with personal matters, citing her daughter’s wedding and her mother’s funeral as examples. All the correspondence pertaining to official business was turned over to and archived by State. The deletion of the emails, though perfectly legal, has excited House Republicans, including Speaker John Boehner, who has announced plans to deploy House committees to investigate what might aptly be called Servergate.

Never mind that former Secretary of State Colin Powell, a Republican, has said he used a system similar to Clinton’s — and never mind that in 2007 Karl Rove deleted 22 million emails from a private server in the Bush White House — a matter about which the Beltway media said little and Republicans in Congress, like Rep. John Boehner, said nothing.

Here is a brief refresher on the White House email scandal:

Not long after George W. Bush assumed the presidency in 2001, Rove, his top political aide, set up a private email server for use in the White House. The stated purpose of the system — the primary domain name on which was gwb43.com — was that it would be used exclusively for the sort of political correspondence that Bush and Rove were not permitted to do on the taxpayer’s dime.

Seven years later, Bush and Rove were embroiled in two competing scandals — the Valerie Plame scandal, in which operatives for Vice Pres. Dick Cheney, including Rove and Scooter Libby, were accused of unmasking Valerie Plame, a CIA specialist in the black market for weapons of mass destruction, for purely partisan reasons, and the U.S. Attorney purge, in which Rove’s political operation in the White House was accused of ordering Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to purge eight U.S. attorneys who were qualified prosecutors and replace them with political hacks with little or no prosecutorial experience.

Rove escaped prosecution in the Libby case, but Libby was convicted (Bush quickly commuted the sentence) on March 6, 2007, at the same time Bush and Rove were under fire for purging the U.S. attorneys. During the investigation, it came to light that Rove’s server had been used to send official, non-political emails — correspondence that was required by law to be preserved under the Presidential Records Act.

On April 12, 2007, Rove’s operation admitted that it had deleted at least 5 million emails from the server. In December 2009, technicians who had examined the server reported that the number of emails that had been deleted was far greater — 22 million.

What was in the emails? No one will ever know. It’s likely as not that there was incriminating evidence in the correspondence that tied Rove and others to the treasonous exposure of Agent Plame (which, at a minimum, was a violation of government security), the U.S. attorneys’ purge and perhaps other scandals, including the inquiry into charges that Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff had used his entre with others in the GOP to bribe government officials. Abramoff was in prison serving the first year of his sentence when the email scandal broke.

If nothing else, this appears to be a prima facie case (or, rather, 22 million cases) of obstruction of justice. How serious is obstruction of justice? It’s the crime Pres. Richard Nixon was charged with by the House of Representatives in 1974 that prompted him to resign rather than face impeachment.

But what sort of evidence might have been lost in the 50,000 emails Hillary Clinton deleted? The insinuation from Republicans is that something dispositive about the Benghazi scandal might have been erased. It’s hard to guess what that might have been. What the GOP seems to be looking for in its eight investigations into Benghazi, so far, is a stand-down order issued by the State Department or the White House to the military that left the Benghazi consulate vulnerable to the attack that ensued. These Republicans know, of course, that the Secretary of State doesn’t have the authority to issue orders to the military.

Given that, there’s no question that the coverage of the Clinton email “scandal” is out of scale, but how does the incessant media coverage today stack up against the scandal seven years ago when Rove’s political operation in the White House erased 22 million emails many of which likely included evidence of serious crimes?

Last week, the fact-checking organization Politifact, which tends to skew to the right, compared coverage of the two scandals. Here’s it’s verdict:

We did a search through Lexis-Nexis, a research service that tracks news articles and transcripts, between March and May 2007. We found more than 125 transcripts from the major cable networks and National Public Radio that include “Republican National Committee” and “email” within 10 words of each other.

The Lexis-Nexis search also yielded more than 200 related newspaper articles across the country within the same time frame.

Let’s compare that to coverage of the Clinton controversy.

Since the story broke March 3, 2015 — two weeks ago — we found 204 cable and public radio transcripts that include “Clinton” and “email.” We also found 1,700 newspaper articles across the country.

That’s several times as many articles and transcripts about Clinton than there were about the Bush email controversy in a quarter of the time. It’s a rough measurement, but clearly there has been more media attention on Clinton’s use of private email than that of the White House staffers.

Even so, Politifact rated the claim that coverage of Clinton’s email deletions is out of scale compared with coverage of Rove’s in 2007 is “mostly false.”

Wait. What?

In the Rove scandal, there were 125 broadcast reports and 200 newspaper articles over three months about the millions of deleted emails. Today, in just two weeks there have been 200 broadcast reports and 1,700 newspaper articles about the 50,000 deleted emails.

And yet Politifact finds the assertion that there’s been more coverage of Clinton than there was of Rove to be “mostly false.” How did they do that?

Simple. Politifact keyed its verdict to a Fox pundit’s hyperbolic statement there was “zero coverage” of Rove’s scandal when it broke. So, yeah, it’s “mostly false” that there was “zero coverage.”

Republicans’ objective in using its lapdogs in the “liberal media” to exaggerate the Clinton emails controversy is to damage her image in advance of her run for the presidency. Polls show that their strategy is working — while Hillary Clinton remains the odds-on favorite among Democratic voters, her approval rating has slipped among all voters in polls released since the email deletions came to light.

At least Republicans are good at something.

Thanks for the link. Kinda shuts many of these idiots up. Also 14 years ago the rules were softer and unknown. There is also a big difference between performing your duty as the Sec of State on a private server vs. having a private email account to deal with junk mail.

Due to behaviour like this the rules were tightened during clinton’s time as Secretary of State in 2005. Yet here we are absolving her 11 years later for clear violations to those “new” rules. She did not abide by those changes. She spouts that Colin Powell did “it”, but he was not subject to those rules at that time. She however was. In such an interconnected digital world where some would argue the Internet is the new battleground… Do you really want a commander and chief where comedians excuse it as “just be glad it’s a grandma who can use email.” Kinda, ummmm, not so much. it there were 22 million emails that would mean they would have to read or write on average 7,535 emails a day! or 3,767 emails per person per day, if they sent emails and wrote emails 8 hours a day they would have to compose 470 emails per hour, or 8 emails per minute. if the average email contained 100 words, they would have to be able to read or write 800 words per minute, 13 words per second. so where would they have time to do anything else? something stinks about this story, some other points, their email server was set up in the white house, not in a private residence. given past precedence why didn’t congress elect to create a law preventing politicians from using private email servers? and why didn’t the democrats go after bush and Chaney, and seek indictment? Finally bush based on this report was not using his private email server to send and receive classified information!

Aron, You seem to be okay with believing that Clinton wrote fifty thousand personal e-mails not including all the business e-mails by herself. Rove set up a server for the whole white house that hundreds of staffers and officials could use. twenty two million is not fishy unless you are blinding yourself to how things work because you don’t want to know the truth.

I don’t usually get into others conversations but this has been in my mind for a long time and when I saw your comment I just dropped in. I stand in complete amazement when I hear someone praise the Clinton’s. How is it that people set aside the man who was allowed to abuse women right down to the young girl who in awe of the president allowed him to treat her like trash. Oh and the lies he told until he was forced to admit the truth. Now we are dealing with his wife who was so aware of what he was doing but didn’t care until it became public and she was temporarily embarrassed. She has one up on Bill though. She is a much better liar. I can’t understand why anyone wants her in office knowing she never tells the truth. I truly believe she is evil. I really have a problem knowing she and her followers are all for abortion of helpless babies.. How can they think it is o k to murder unborn babies calling them just a fetus when they are a living breathing creation of God? .Why is it against the law to kill what is referred to as protected wildlife but the babies have no protection from being drug from the mothers womb by a heartless doctor who punctures the little brain an throws it in the garbage. My old heart breaks with all the cruelty and I just pray that we will get someone as president who will care about so many issues that are so wrong.

Grace, Bush did not cut the benefits for our military. Go back and re check because that was done by Obama and he should be ashamed of every day he has been in office. I will be so glad to see and hear the last of that fool.

Why would the “little girl so in awe of the President ” save the dress? Really. It was up to his wife how she handled it, not any one else. It was a private issue. Hillary is going to be a great president. She knows how to handle people, she dosent get all red faced when something dosent go her way. One of the reasons that the republicans dont like her is she as first lady didnt sit back and do nothing she tried to get universal healthcare passed. Abortion is legal in all 50 states. They do not do late term abortions unless it is for the health of the mother. It is done in the first 3 months. Please get your facts straight.

Helen Dumphy, Monica did not save the dress. Linda Tripp convinced Monica to give her the dress for safekeeping just in case she later needed it to protect herself.

Also, it was not a private affair. It was an inappropriate workplace relationship. There’s no tap dancing around that fact.

Lastly, Bill’s reckless behavior rendered him vulnerable to blackmail, potentially endangering us all.

Is absolutely amazing how moronic and idiotic the comments are from this article.

Hey dumbasses, Karl Rove deleting campaign emails is not the same as the Secretary of State intentionally putting a server off site, and then giving access to secret information to those unqualified to handle it. She also left it open and exposed to being hacked, which the FBI already said it was likely.
This law doesn’t require intent, because it is based on the common sense knowledge that anyone who holds such a clearance understands that this information is to be handled with care.

Criminal Intent is not required, and she clearly violated the law on multiple levels, which the FBI already stated to be the case, she absolutely did show intent, because she intentionally moved a server off site and set it up for her own personal agenda.

This also makes her completely unacceptable because she is exposed to Blackmail by people all over the world who without a doubt have that information.

That server was already determined to be less secure than a standard Google email account. You are so naive to think that sophisticated government enemies around the world haven’t hacked into that? If so, you’re an idiot.

Is absolutely amazing how people here are so poetically driven from their ideology, they sit here and make excuses up for the inexcusable and try to point fingers to bad behavior to excuse more bad behavior. What is it with you freakin left wing Hack jobs?

Did you not mature past grade school? What is this crap always being speared by the left with the whole excuse of “they did it, so what’s the big deal if we did it too?”
It’s not okay if anybody does it!

The claims of Colin Powell and rice are idiotic as well, they did everything within the government servers and system.

They didn’t completely set up an unauthorized server site. There’s many people prosecuted and punished for the exact thing Hilary did but in way less context and way less severe.
Whatthis has proven is that the system’s absolutely corrupt and there is one set of rules for the regular folks and completely different set of rules for the elites.

You morons sitting here spinning and justifying this kind of crap is exactly the reason this country is so messed up, and you can’t see past your own stupid class Party Loyalty long enough to use some common sense and be honest and objective and hold someone accountable where it’s due.

This country is absolutely in trouble and rotten to the core, and all you morons sitting here propping it up all because you’re brainwashed over political loyalty is disgusting and nothing but continued exacerbation of the current system overall.

    Grow up.

Nick – Some people will go to great lengths for party loyalty. But I’m willing to bet that the majority of people ARE using common sense. We absolutely cannot have a president who is a bigot, from Mexicans to Muslims, to women to people who don’t agree with him and on and on.
Bill cheated on Hillary while in the white house. For shame, but it happens all the time. Donnie has cheated on all his wives, and it’s not going to end any time soon. For that reason alone I wouldn’t vote for him. It just ain’t right!
I recently saw where he was compared to one of the original SNL characters, Roseann Roseannadanna and her “Never Mind” skits.
**I’m going to build a wall along the Mexico border and make the Mexican government pay for it. Modified his decision…”never mind”
**I’m not going to allow ANY more Muslims into the USA. Modified his decision…”never mind”
**The judge in the lawsuit against me is biased because he’s Mexican…Modified his words…”never mind”
And so on and so on…….he’s tripping over his own tongue and drowning in his own stupidity. Even when he has a teleprompter with a GOP APPROVED SPEECH he can’t keep to the subject without throwing in his line of BS and lies.
He has said bankruptcy is normal in the business world. He made a lot of money off the backs of ordinary people and their misery at losing their jobs. How many people in Atlantic City do you suppose are backing him? If you or I had to declare bankruptcy, it would hound us for 7-10 years, preventing us from recovering as he has done not once, but many times. Our country can’t afford another recession so soon after the one left to us by GWB’s administration. I don’t believe the majority of the truly poor in this country back him. Why would they?
There are many, many members in the GOP who just refuse to back him because he’s dangerous. I firmly believe he is too dangerous to have control of this country and all the “Buttons” that go with the job. He is a ticking TIME BOMB, just waiting to go off. Picture in your mind what would happen if Putin pissed him off. Speaking as a Naval Veteran, I didn’t serve my country for it to come to this. I’m not a zealot, but I do pray for this country, and its’ future.

Sorry Kevin, that’s totally wrong. Federal internet information security was first officially established in 2002 with the Homeland Security Act and she was not SOS until what, 2009? By that time I’m sure training was required. I’d also be very surprised if she did not have to sign agreements that outlined how she was to deal with sensitive information. Heck I had to with the NSA in 1983 but everyone was thinking about physical documents then :-).

The Rove email situation was very complicated. Orin Hatch had pushed through a bill preventing the use of federal resources for political gain so anyone in politics had to have a private system to comply. This one got set up and then probably abused through negligence by any number of the 50 or so users. The system was set up to record everything and not lose it. The 22 million lost which are discussed above were really due to a software problem and they were found in 2009. The investigation during the Rove situation was focused more on a smaller number of emails related to a specific request and investigation. There was no actual proof that anything was deleted by Rove as far as I’m aware, it just tainted an already badly tarnished reputation. Keep in mind that the Rove server was a government sanctioned and secured server, albeit for private use. Hillary’s case was a privately set up system and she or her lawyers later covered up her use of it for sensitive information. This is a fact, not a conjecture, the FBI report confirms it. Also, there is every indication that this system was highly vulnerable, much more so than the Rove system located behind Whitehouse security protocols. If you put a mail server on the public internet since about 2005 you will get cyber attacked within a couple months and it accelerates. And not just a little. A typical system will get 300,000 to 1 Million hits a day once discovered. If they knew it was Hillary’s system then all bets are off and it was likely broken into. Think about this before you defend her. She was almost certainly trained, almost certainly signed agreements, and yet she paid to have this set up and then she carelessly used it for sensitive information. The US Secretary of State. I think it tells volumes about her.

Look I agree this was negligence and not a nefarious act. Mostly the punishment for negligence has been revoking access. The FBI should not give her special treatment. You could make a good argument that as SOS she should be held to a much higher bar. She still has one thing going for her – Trump is even scarier. Makes me want to puke to vote for either of them.

Bad behavior isn’t and shouldn’t be given as a reason that it’s ok to do the same thing only many, many times worse. There are many who have done far less to undermine our country that have been punished or had consequences that Hillary will never have to answer for. It’s simply wrong.

No they werent. they said they might be able to recover them, but they didnt.

In 2009, it was announced that as many as 22 million emails may have been lost.[5

The evidence obtained by the Committee indicates that White House officials used their RNC email accounts in a manner that circumvented these requirements. At this point in the investigation, it is not possible to determine precisely how many presidential records may have been destroyed by the RNC. Given the heavy reliance by White House officials on RNC email accounts, the high rank of the White House officials involved, and the large quantity of missing emails, the potential violation of the Presidential Records Act may be extensive.

Hey everyone! Reality check here! Before you start accusing the GOP about “playing to the low-information voter”, take a look at the date on this article. It was written back in March. Read the content without just skipping through. Clearly many of the points that the FBI just announced as truth shows that there is no need for “faux outrage”. It’s real outrage, and is now justifiable by hard facts. The Liberal media and the Democrats are going to do their best to say that this is “over”, but the American People won’t have their intelligence insulted and just call it quits on this without a fight. Nobody thought that Hillary’s credibility could dip any lower, but she’s just shattered her own record. It’s going to cost her.

Neither Trump nor Clinton are FIT to be president. We need to change the law wherein any candidate cannot be under investigation for a crime. Hillary Clinton has been in the middle of scandals since Watergate. Neither she nor her husband have a moral compass. Out of all the people WITH integrity, we have to end up with these two to choose from. Dumb and Dumber. If we can’t find some measure of unity in our nation, Obama would just LOVE to declare martial law.

The Republicans are best at obstructionism, ineptness; wasting time and money.
They have created the sick state of affairs that exist in our country today.

If a sane person would address some of the “sane points” of discontent that Trump has been bringing up, and discussed some solutions, or ways to address these issues, then maybe, just maybe, this country might have a chance of not imploding.

Since all 22 million emails were recovered in 2009 and it was found that they were NOT DELETED but incorrectly archived, this is apples and oranges.

NON of the emails had classified information in them because those who handled classified information were using a secure server – AND the laws regarding archiving and use of private servers were CHANGED after this so that this kind of thing could be avoided in the future…

No attorney’s scrubbed the email servers and devises in such a way as to be unrecoverable by the FBI…..

AND someone was PROSECUTED – for LYING to the FBI.

Bush did not do what Hillary did. Bush deleted emails. He covered his wrong and walked away empty handed. Hillary took government emails and stored them on her personal server in her home, then she transferred the emails to 2 private firms, and again to her legal firm. None of these firms nor her law firm had the clearance to receive these documents. No investigation was made into accessiblitity of these files by their employees. Further, at least one of these firms backed up (made copies) of her files and stored the copies in the cloud (on servers all over the world). Had Hillary erased her emails, there would be no scandal today. But instead she left office and took her emails with her. Once investigation into Benghazi took place, evidence of her personal server arose. Hillary then earsed emails from that server. But there were still multiple copies still in her control. She stated that she turned over everything “in her possession.” When the FBI observed the private servers, these companies were asked to turn over what they had. Hillary notified them to erase their files, but one did not want to get caught in a coverup and obeyed the FBI. The FBI was able to prove that she erased these files because they had the copies. They were able to show she had moved classified documents to an unsecured location because they had copies of those emails. Hillary left proof of her crimes, although it was not her intent to do so. Her actions are acts no other SOS nor president has ever taken!! If her emails were erased, no other entity could have access to them. Instead any nation could have access to her documents, while she was SOS and up to when the FBI took possession. But the FBI took possession after other nations had the opportunity to do so as well.

Doris, thank you for succinctly laying out the facts and timelines. I get so annoyed and upset when liberals call republicans “obstructionists,” and talk as if we should just let her walk on her LATEST criminal scandal and go on her merry way to the White House, WITHOUT caring whether she broke the law. I am tired of being lied to and made out to be foolish for trusting our government. The same government that took a pledge to uphold and protect our Constitution. Where I come from, when someone gave their promise to do something, they DID IT! We NEVER even thought to check on their honesty or integrity. Doing that would insult their HONOR! Nowadays, it appears we need to do a whole lot more checking. Pathetic!

At this point, there have been 8 investigations & millions of tax payer dollars wasted on trying to prove Hillary of intent and purposeful misconduct, among many other things. She has been scrutinized by republicans from as many angles as they can invent to have her indicted and have failed each time to achieve finding a smoking gun or that one magic piece of evidence that would, beyond a doubt, prove her to be a criminal.

When will enough be enough? A 9th or 10th investigation? Billions of tax dollars wasted on yet more investigations? When will they let it go? Now with the latest attempt of involving the FBI and, again, nothing worth prosecuting?

Let it go already! Stop wasting tax dollars and start doing the jobs you were hired and paid very well to do! Sadly our government is turning into a media circus show with real political achievements becoming something of a bygone era, wishful thinking, and fairytales! Once upon a time we believed our president was an honorable position and to be treated with respect. Sadly, this started to change in the 90s and has only gotten worse with the presidency of Obama (someone other than a stuffy old white man) and even worse with the candidacy of Hillary!

It hurts my heart as an American, that we have strayed so far from our own ideals. I applaud Hillary Clinton for her strength and perseverance. She has a difficult road ahead over the coming months as the presidential race continues. I have no doubt in my mind that she will do her best to win this election and I truly hope she does for the sake of this great nation, as well as to pave the way for more future female leaders to rally and fight for position within this boy’s club we call our government!

History has shown to repeat itself! Looking back to voters rights in America, we can see that black men had the right to vote before any woman. Thank you Obama for paving the way to the White House! Regardless of the slander and countless wasteful investigations, she will triumph!

Rove erased RNC emails — private emails that he had every right to erase.
Hillary erased government emails in violation of federal law. Furthermore, Hillary used a private email system to host classified — even top secret — information in violation of federal law. Third, Hillary lied about it under oath; she perjured herself.

There is no comparison between these two actions.
You people need to wake up and stop reading trash like this article.

Since this was such a scandal at the time it is even more reason to prosecute Hillary. There was a precedent set when Rove did this. The ultimate uproar concluded that this is against the law as stated in the following US Codes.

The taking of a public record or document is prohibited by 18 U.S.C. § 641. The destruction of such records may be reached under 18 U.S.C. § 1361.
