GOP Pulls Support for Mark Sanford in South Carolina House Race after He Was Caught in His Ex-Wife’s Home in Violation of Court Order

Sanford
The National Republican Congressional Committee announced today that it will no longer support Mark Sanford’s campaign in the special election for the open seat in South Carolina’s 1st U.S. House District. This dramatic announcement suggests that the trespassing charge brought yesterday against Sanford by his ex-wife Ginny, who is a popular figure in Republican circles, is viewed as fatal to Sanford’s campaign within the party establishment.

One reason that the NRCC and other Sanford supporters may be irked is that the trespassing incident — which Sanford admitted to today — happened in February, well before voting in the primary for the special election, which took place on March 19, but was kept secret until yesterday. According to Politico:

With Domenici’s Adultery Scandal, the C Street Christianist Cult Rears Its Ugly Head Again

Clockwise from the left: Michelle Laxalt in a recent photo, C Street cult headquarters on Capitol Hill, and Sen. Domenici in the 1970s

Former New Mexico Sen. Pete Domenici admitted yesterday that in 1979, when he was 46, he had an adulterous relationship with the 24-year-old daughter of his colleague, then Sen. Paul Laxalt of Nevada. In a statement also released yesterday, Laxalt’s daughter Michelle said that she became pregnant as a result of the encounter, which she described as a one-night stand and a “mistake.” She said she raised the son, Adam Laxalt, now 34 years old, as a single mother.

They believe that morality is a secular construct — that morality is something made by man for little people like us, and that if you are part of God’s chosen … morality, ethics, these things don’t apply to you.
– Jeff Sharlet

Domenici and the Laxalts are all Republicans.

By keeping their secret for all these years, as Lauren Ashburn at the Daily Beast pointed out, both Domenici, who retired in 2009 and is now 80, and Michelle Laxalt, 57, benefited.

Domenici — New Mexico’s longest-serving senator — was able to hold onto his career, including being reelected five times. Michelle Laxalt became a Washington lobbyist, head of the Laxalt Corporation, which she founded in 1984, when her son was about five years old. She also served as a staffer for Republican senators, including Ted Stevens and John Warner, and worked on the Reagan and Bush I and Bush II presidential campaigns.

Because of his extremist positions on morality, it’s likely Domenici’s career in politics would have ended if his extramarital dalliance had come to light. In the Daily Beast, Asburn points to examples of pols whose careers were recently stymied when their affairs were made public, including N.C. Sen. John Edwards, a Democrat, former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and former Nevada Sen. John Ensign.

Both Sanford and Ensign are Republicans and, like Domenici, they are members of “the Family,” the infamous, high-powered Christianist cult that operates out of a house on C Street on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Lawyers for Dick Morris Threaten Rachel Maddow Because She Characterized the Amount of Money His SuperPAC Launders Through NewsMax As ‘Substantial’

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

On MSNBC Friday night, Rachel Maddow reported that she had recently received a very stern letter from lawyers for Fox pundit Dick Morris who objected to a report by Maddow last month on Morris’ financial activities. In the report, Maddow described how Morris paid for advertising on the birther website NewsMax only to recoup the advertising fees when NewsMax rented DickMorris.com’s mailing lists. The lawyers did not like the fact that Maddow had described the amount of money Morris laundered through NewsMax as “substantial.”

Caught on Tape: Murdoch, Ailes Acted as Recruiters for GOP, Sent Fox News Operative to Invite Petraeus to Run for President

The release of a secretly recorded conversation between Gen. David Petraeus and a Fox News operative has erased all plausible deniability about the fact that Fox News is nothing other than a media and communications vehicle for the Republican Party. In the recording, which was apparently made by Petraeus, Kathleen T. McFarland, a Fox News “security analyst,” is heard asking Petraeus to run for president, an invitation she says she is delivering on behalf Roger Ailes, head of Fox News, and Rupert Murdoch, owner of the Newscorp, the parent company of Fox. The recording was made in Afghanistan in the spring of 2011 a few weeks before Pres. Obama appointed Petreaus as head of the CIA — and more than a year before Petreaus resigned from the CIA in disgrace after revealing he was engaged in an ongoing affair with one of his fans.

Mitt Romney Alleged to Have Committed Perjury in Staples CEO’s Divorce Trial – Mitt Was Also Accused of Perjury in 2002

Tom Stemberg and ex-wife Maureen Sullivan

Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred has a pretty good track record when it comes to lobbing political bombshells. In 2010, she permanently hobbled the gubernatorial campaign of Mitt Romney’s friend Meg Whitman with the revelation that Whitman had employed an undocumented worker for years and then tried to cover it up.

More recently, Allred was instrumental in bringing then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s extramarital affair with his housekeeper to light, providing proof, finally, that Schwarzenegger was a scumbag philanderer — a fact that had been common knowledge in Hollywood for decades for the action star ran for governor.

Now Allred is investigating testimony provided by Romney during divorce proceedings for Staples CEO Tom Stemberg and his then-wife Maureen Sullivan. In the testimony, Romney is alleged to have helped Stemberg conceal the true worth of Staples Inc. from the court.

Anti-Gay Marriage Christianist Behind Anti-Obama ‘Documentary’ Disgraced by Adultery Scandal

D"Souza and Joseph
D"Souza and Joseph
If the name Dinesh D’Souza rings a bell it may be because you remember him as the right-wing propagandist/nutjob whom Newt Gingrich was quoting when he came up with the schtick about Pres. Obama being “anti-colonial.”

Conservative “intellectuals” bought into this this bizarre critique, of course, even though it put Obama in pretty good presidential company. It’s fair to say that Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Monroe and Jackson were all “anti-colonial,” for example.

Republican Ex-Gov Admits Serial Adulteries – Cover Up of Affairs Got Him Elected

photo-shwarzenegger-gov-podiumIf there is a bigger douche than Arnold Schwarzenegger in American politics, I can’t imagine who it might be. (Newt Gingrich, possibly.) Now, nearly two years after leaving office in political disgrace and then copping to the fact that he had an child with his family’s housekeeper, the former governor of California has embarked on a desperate quest to to rewrite history and rehabilitate his image.

He has purchased an academic institute at the University of Southern California and now has released a memoir which is ironically titled “Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story.”

To promote his historical revisionism, Schwarzenegger appeared on CBS “60 Minutes” and admitted the extramarital affairs he’s had that the public already knows about:

Gingrich Super PAC Rushes in to Buy Ads on Limbaugh Show

As of March 5, 11 companies had pulled their ads off Rush Limbaugh’s radio show in protest over Limbaugh’s labeling millions of American as “sluts” and prostitutes because their contraceptives are covered by insurance.

But the Los Angeles Times reports that at least one advertiser has rushed in to show support for Limbaugh’s rampant misogyny with an increased ad buy:

A spokesman for Winning Our Future, a “super PAC” backing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s presidential bid, said the group purchased more airtime. “He apologized and we’re satisfied,” said spokesman Rick Tyler, who said the group began advertising with the program two weeks ago.

The “Winning” super PAC is funded almost entirely with multimillion dollar donations from Sheldon Adelson, owner of two high-profile casinos in Las Vegas, the Venetian and the Sands. Adelson’s wife Miriam also donated millions to the Gingrich fund. The Adelsons’ donations have kept the Gingrich campaign going well past its “sell by” date.

What’s telling about this move is that Gingrich is an infamous serial philanderer who left both his first and second wives in favor of his mistresses not long after each woman had been diagnosed with a serious illness — his first wife Jackie with cancer and second wife Marianne with multiple sclerosis.

So it is likely that operatives at the pro-Gingrich PAC figured they had nothing to lose in supporting Limbaugh, because no self-respecting woman would vote for Newt Gingrich in the first place.

In New Interview Set to Air before S.C. Primary, Newt Gingrich’s Second Wife Says Newt Wanted an ‘Open Relationship’

screenshot-marianne-gingrich-nightline

Daily Mail:

Newt Gingrich’s ex-wife revealed for the first time today that the GOP presidential hopeful had asked for an open marriage so that he could have a wife and a mistress.

Marianne Gingrich, his second wife, said she wanted American voters to know his true moral character. There have been fears that her explosive television interview could end her former partner’s campaign for the White House.

Regarding the claims, Marianne told ABC: “And I just stared at him and he said, ‘Callista doesn’t care what I do.’ He wanted an open marriage and I refused.”

As of early Thursday morning, ABC News had not announced when it will air the interview, but it will presumably be Thursday or Friday night, on the eve of the South Carolina primary on Saturday.

Marianne Gingrich’s last interview was with Esquire, for an article published in August 2010. What was apparent then was that she has neither forgiven nor forgotten. She has obviously timed this interview so that it will air just before a potentially make or break primary in a state that is hotbed of Republican “values voters.”

In the 2010 interview, Marianne Gingrich confirmed one of the more paradoxical rumors about Newt’s marital history.

Newt Pledges to Uphold 1996 Defense of Marriage Act – Even Claims Credit for DOMA, Which He Enacted While Having an Affair

art-newsweek-cover-newt-akimboIn a letter this week to an Iowa anti-gay hate group, Republican frontrunner Newt Gingrich pledged that, “[as] President, I will vigorously enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, which was enacted under my leadership as speaker of the House, and ensure compliance with its provisions, especially in the military. I will also aggressively defend the constitutionality of DOMA in federal and state courts.” (Emphasis added.)

I had promised myself I was going to lay off Newt during the primaries because I don’t want anything to jinx his chances of winning the Republican nomination, which is the clearest path to reelection for Pres. Obama. But this is too rich to resist.

First of all, why would anyone believe anything an old philanderer like Newt would say about marriage? Secondly, what Newt doesn’t say, of course, is that at the same time he was pushing DOMA through Congress, he, was in the second year of an adulterous affair that was as risky to his party — Republicans were still posing as paragons of family values back then — as it was reckless and damaging to his family.
