What Did the So-Called President Know – And When Did He Know It?

White House Counsel Donald McGahn
White House Counsel Donald McGahn

In his resignation letter released last night, National Security Adviser Michael Flynn said he was quitting his post because he had “inadvertently” lied to Mike Pence about whether he’d discussed Pres.Obama’s sanctions against Russia in a phone call with the Russian ambassador in a phone call in December.

From the administration that gave us “alternate facts,” now we have inadvertent lies.

But there’s much more to this story — and what lies beneath what is publicly known now could have devastating consequences for Donald Trump:

Ryan Speaks More with Trump than Obama — Duh!

I have spoken more with Donald Trump in the last month more than I have spoken with Barack Obama in the last eight years.”

— Speaker Paul Ryan, quoted by the Washington Examiner. It should be noted that Ryan has been speaker only since October 2015, prior to which why would the president speak regularly to a congressman from a “flyover” state?

doctordemocrat2Dear Dr. Democrat,

Republicans have been chomping at the bit to kill Obamacare forever. But now that they’re ready to do it, they don’t have a clue how to replace it.

What gives?

Pre-Trump It’s Post-Truth

This year facts didn’t matter in the voting booth,
And to parse fact from fiction would take a sleuth.
You’ve got your facts, I’ve got mine,
So don’t even try to change my mind,
For we’ve entered and era (not an epoch, I hope) of the post-truth.

Following Yet Another Moment of Silence, House Democrats Ask: “Where’s the Bill?”

U.S. House Speaker Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) tried to put the same “moment of silence” coin in the slot the day after the Orlando mass shooting as he did after others, but House Democrats discovered they have backbones and acted accordingly.

“The fact is that a moment of silence is an act of respect, and we supported that. But it is a not a license to do nothing,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told reporters off the House floor afterward.

“Members have just had enough of having one minute, a moment of silence on the floor, and then take no action,” she said.

Yep. Haven’t we all?

A Growing Tolerance for Lying

There’s a good chance that if you’re reading this you don’t believe it. … It hasn’t exactly been a banner year for truth-telling in the 2016 election, with flubs, rumors, misleading stats and flat-out falsehoods uttered on the campaign trail and ping-ponged around the social media universe with regularity. But in many cases, furious fact-checking from the mainstream media has not only failed to prompt solemn apologies from the worst offenders — it’s made them stronger.

Lies, Damned Lies and Trump/Carson Lies

When Hillary Clinton lies, she generally does so with legalistic care. You get the sense that she knows what the exact truth is. But you also get the sense that she knows she’ll suffer if she provides the whole truth, so she shades the facts with interpretations and embellishments that flatter or favor her. … Trump’s and Carson’s lies, on the other hand, come from the land of bullshit, that wonderful place where loose facts and wishful thinking mate to produce a quotable soundbite. They’re not trying to deceive you in a Clintonian fashion. They’re indifferent to the truth, content to say the first things that pop into their brains.

Trump vs. Trump: MTP Chronicles the Donald’s History of Mitt Romney-esque Flip Flops

screenshot-trump-vs-trump

In the 2012 presidential campaign, Republican nominee Mitt Romney seemed to set a world record for prevaricating and flip-flopping. In the 2016 GOP cycle, Donald Trump has emerged from the pack by portraying himself as a tell-it-like-it-is straight shooter. However, a look at the facts reveals that the Donald is just following a page from Romney’s lying, flip-flopping playbook. Politifact has nailed Trump on his lies about immigration and just about everything else — the right-leaning site found that, as of July 14, 2015, zero (0) of Trump’s recent statements were true. And now NBC’s “Meet the Press” — yes, MTP — has put together a reel of Trump’s flip flops that might even make the Mittster blush.

Republicans, a Rock, a Hard Place and Obamacare

screenshot-obamacare-free-birth-control

The Republican gambit of demonizing Obamacare is starting to backfire — as well it should. The strategy is based on a lie.

In 2009, Pres. Obama opted to use the individual mandate model as the basis of health-insurance reform — rather than the single-payer, Medicare-for-all approach his supporters preferred — in part because he hoped to strike a deal with Republicans. His quest for bipartisanship seems ridiculous now (as it did then to many people), but it was, in fact, grounded in reality.
