Shot to Hell

Last night a black man shot 11 police in Dallas,
After police shot two black men in Baton Rouge and Minneapolis.
When everyone’s armed,
Anyone can be harmed,
And regardless of race, it’s open season on us all, alas.

Following Yet Another Moment of Silence, House Democrats Ask: “Where’s the Bill?”

U.S. House Speaker Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) tried to put the same “moment of silence” coin in the slot the day after the Orlando mass shooting as he did after others, but House Democrats discovered they have backbones and acted accordingly.

“The fact is that a moment of silence is an act of respect, and we supported that. But it is a not a license to do nothing,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told reporters off the House floor afterward.

“Members have just had enough of having one minute, a moment of silence on the floor, and then take no action,” she said.

Yep. Haven’t we all?

Rubio Tries to Change the Topic from Gun Control to ‘Bomb Control’

I don’t hear anybody talking about bomb control. They put bombs and left bombs behind on the scene of attack, intending to kill even more people than they did with guns.

— Sen. Marco Rubio, sounding dumber than usual in an interview with Fox News.

Praying Doesn’t Help

At 355 in 2015, we’re up to almost one mass shooting per day,
And our benumbed and benighted nation has little enough to say.
Democrats seek a solution,
Proposing gun legislation,
That Republicans vote down even while for the victims they pray.

Reid Ties GOP to NRA After Latest Mass Shootings

Those who choose to do the NRA’s bidding will be held accountable by our constituents. Something has to be done. We must take a stand. The American people are desperately looking for help, some help, any help. It will never be possible to prevent every shooting. We know that. But we have a responsibility to try. There are certain things we can do.

— Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), calling the NRA the “quasi-militant wing of the Republican Party,” Politico reports.

Obama Reacts to the Latest Mass Shooting

This is not normal. We can’t let it become normal. If we truly care about this — if we’re going to offer up our thoughts and prayers again, for God knows how many times, with a truly clean conscience — then we have to do something about the easy accessibility of weapons of war on our streets to people who have no business wielding them. Period. Enough is enough.

— President Obama, quoted by Politico, after yet another mass shooting.

Some Questions for the Gun Store Owner With the “Muslim-Free Zone”

When a gun shop owner announces he’s closing because he’s tired of selling arms to young, disturbed white guys wearing rebel flags, that will be a YouTube video worth watching

It’s bad enough that a gun store owner declared his store a “Muslim-free zone” after the shooting and killing of four Marines and a Navy sailor by 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdelazeez. That he chose to deliver this message in front of a rebel flag tacked up over an American flag, while wearing a sidearm, made this move just that much worse.

There are so many questions raised by Andy Hallinan’s video. For starters:

  • Why didn’t Hallinan declare his gun shop a “white supremacist who says he wants to start a race war free zone” after 21-year-old Dylann Roof shot and killed nine people at a Charleston church?

Half the Battle

The Confederate flag battle has at last been won.
It’s finally been relegated to a history museum.
The move is symbolic,
But it belies the logic:
We got rid of the flag, but not the gun.

Why Aren’t BMW and Adidas Condemning the Rebel Flag?

Now flying over the South Carolina state capitol
Now flying over the South Carolina state capitol

Both BMW and Adidas have plants in South Carolina but neither company has shown any interest in asking state legislators to stop flying the Confederate flag* over government buildings.

When these companies decided to take advantage of the cheaper, mostly non-unionized labor there, they made a decision to identify with the state. So why aren’t they speaking up? After all, it’s their state now.
