Biden Still Ahead, Warren Surging in Iowa


A new Monmouth poll in Iowa finds Joe Biden leading the Democratic field with 28%, followed by Elizabeth Warren at 19%, Kamala Harris at 11%, Bernie Sanders at 9% and Pete Buttigieg at 8%. Other candidates who register at least 2% in the poll include Amy Klobuchar at 3%, Tom Steyer at 3%, Kirsten Gillibrand at 2% and Andrew Yang at 2%. The remaining 15 candidates included in the poll each earn 1% or less. Of particular note, Beto O’Rourke, who had 6% support in April, registers less than 1% in the current poll.


Iowans Are Disenchanted with Trump


Washington Post: “Iowa has seemingly soured on the president and his party. The end-of-year Iowa Poll, an industry standard conducted by Des Moines-based Selzer and Co., found Trump with just 35 percent approval in the state. Only 34 percent of Iowans said they would back Republicans for Congress in 2018, and 61 percent said they were turned off by politics altogether.”


Half of Iowans Disapprove of Trump’s Performance


A new Des Moines Register poll finds 42% of Iowans approve of the job President Trump is doing, while 49% disapprove. “Trump won Iowa on his way to the White House by 9 percentage points in November, his widest victory among states believed by many to be swing states.”


More Iowans Disagree with Trump Travel Ban


A new Des Moines Register poll finds that 51% of Iowans disagree with President Trump’s executive order pausing refugee resettlement and barring travel to the U.S. from seven Muslim-majority countries.


Cruz Now Leads in Iowa


A new Monmouth University poll in Iowa finds Ted Cruz surging into the lead, followed by Donald Trump at 19%, Marco Rubio at 17%, Ben Carson at 13%, and Jeb Bush at 6%. Said pollster Patrick Murray: “This marks the first time Ted Cruz has held a lead in any of the crucial early states. As Ben Carson’s stock has fallen, Cruz has been able to corral most of those voters. Rep. Steve King’s endorsement may not be the primary reason for this swing, but it certainly put a stamp on the Cruz surge in Iowa.”


Sanders Moves Ahead of Clinton in Iowa

41% to 40%

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) lead over Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential race, with Vice President Joe Biden at 12, according to a new Quinnipiac poll in Iowa. Said pollster Peter Brown: “Sen. Bernie Sanders has become the Eugene McCarthy of 2016. He is the candidate of the Democratic left, against his own party’s bosses and their prized presidential candidate, Secretary Hillary Clinton. Sanders has seized the momentum by offering a message more in line with disproportionately liberal primary and caucus voters.”


Nearly Half of Iowa GOP Voters Favor Deporting Undocumented Immigrants


Of likely GOP caucus goers say it’s a good idea to gather up an estimated 11 million immigrants who are in the United States illegally and send them to their home country, a new Des Moines Register poll in Iowa finds. Among Donald Trump supporters, nearly three-fourths (73 percent) say so.


Trump and Carson Tied in Iowa


A new Monmouth University poll in Iowa finds Ben Carson and Donald Trump tied for the lead with 23% each. The next tier of candidates includes Carly Fiorina (10%) and Ted Cruz (9%), followed by Scott Walker (7%), Jeb Bush (5%), John Kasich (4%), Marco Rubio (4%), and Rand Paul (3%). The last two Iowa caucus victors, Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum, each garner 2% of the vote.
