Republicans: ‘Free Trade Bad’

68%

Of Republicans and Republican-leaning registered voters say free trade has been a bad thing for the U.S., while only 24% say it has been good for the country, according to Pew Research. “These views, which have shifted starkly since May 2015, when 51% of Republican voters said free trade was a good thing for the U.S. and 39% said it was bad, came as President-elect Trump criticized free trade throughout the 2016 election cycle. Democrats, on the other hand, remain largely positive about free trade.”

Next Four Years Critical for American Journalism

Given everything we know about Donald Trump from his divisive, demagogic presidential campaign, the next four years will be a stress test for the American system. … The Trump Years promise to be full of Oval Office insults, Twitter attacks and disregard for facts. But rather than viewing the prospect of covering a Trump administration with exhaustion, we should feel invigorated. Because when this time is done, we will look back on it as the best and most important time to be a journalist – not because it was easy, but because it was hard and our sense of mission was clear: to respect the office of the President while holding the person in power accountable against a standard of enduring American values.

Trump Is a Threat to Democracy

Mr. Trump is not the first American politician with authoritarian tendencies. (Other notable authoritarians include Gov. Huey Long of Louisiana and Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin.) But he is the first in modern American history to be elected president. This is not necessarily because Americans have grown more authoritarian (the United States electorate has always had an authoritarian streak). Rather it’s because the institutional filters that we assumed would protect us from extremists, like the party nomination system and the news media, failed.

Conway: There’s a Nepotism Loophole

The anti-nepotism law apparently has an exception if you want to work in the West Wing because the president is able to appoint his own staff. Of course, this came about to stop maybe family members from serving on the Cabinet, but the president does have discretion to choose a staff of his liking. … So if that is true and that legal advice holds then that will open up a realm of possibilities.

— Kellyanne Conway, on “Morning Joe” asserting that Donald Trump’s family members could be included on the White House staff.

Donald Lives in a ‘Fact-Free Environment’

Trump lives and thrives in a fact-free environment. No president, including Richard Nixon, has been so ignorant of fact and disdains fact in the way this president-elect does. Richard Nixon was nothing, in terms of lying, compared to what we have seen from Donald Trump.

— Carl Bernstein, in an interview on CNN.
